1Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
1اَبیمَلِک، پسر جِدعُون پیش خویشاوندان مادر خود به شَکیم رفت و همه را جمع کرده به آن ها گفت:
2“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
2«به گوش همۀ مردم شَکیم برسانید و از آن ها بپرسید: «آیا می خواهید هفتاد پسران جِدعُون حاکمان تان باشند یا یکنفر که من هستم؟» و به یاد داشته باشید که من رگ و خون شما می باشم.»
3His mother’s brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.”
3پس خویشاوندان مادرش به وکالت او حرفهائی را که زده بود، به مردم شَکیم گفتند. و آن ها با کمال خوشی قبول کردند که از اَبیمَلِک پیروی کنند و گفتند: «او برادر ما است.»
4They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.
4آن ها هفتاد سکۀ نقره از معبد بَعل بَرِیت را به او دادند. اَبیمَلِک با آن پول مردان بیباک و بیکار را اجیر کرد و آن ها پیروان او شدند.
5He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
5بعد اَبیمَلِک به خانۀ پدر خود به عُفره رفت و هفتاد برادر خود را بر روی یک سنگ کشت. تنها خوردترین آن ها که یوتام نام داشت زنده ماند، زیرا او خود را پنهان کرده بود.
6All the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.
6بعد همه باشندگان شَکیم و بیت ملو در پیش درخت بلوط در نزدیک ستون، تاج شاهی را بر سر اَبیمَلِک گذاشتند.
7When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
7وقتی یوتام خبر شد به بالای کوه جَرزِیم ایستاد و به آواز بلند به مردم گفت: «ای باشندگان شَکیم، به من گوش بدهید تا خدا به شما گوش بدهد.
8The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
8یکروز درختان تصمیم گرفتند که پادشاهی برای خود انتخاب کنند. آن ها اول پیش درخت زیتون رفتند و گفتند: «بیا پادشاه ما باش.»
9“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my fatness, with which by me they honor God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
9اما درخت زیتون به آن ها گفت: «آیا می خواهید که من از روغن خود که بخاطر آن خداوند و انسان به من احترام دارند صرف نظر کنم و بروم حاکم درختان دیگر باشم؟»
10“The trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’
10بعد درختان به درخت انجیر گفتند: «بیا پادشاه ما شو.»
11“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
11درخت انجیر جواب داد: «من نمی خواهم که شیرینی و میوۀ گوارای خود را ترک کنم و بروم و بر درختان دیگر پادشاهی کنم.»
12“The trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’
12سپس پیش تاک انگور رفتند و گفتند: «بیا پادشاه ما شو.»
13“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’
13تاک گفت: «آیا باید از شراب خود که برای خدا و انسان خوشی می آورد صرف نظر کنم و حاکم درختان دیگر شوم؟»
14“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’
14بالاخره پیش بوتۀ خار رفتند و گفتند: «بیا و پادشاه ما باش.»
15“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’
15بوتۀ خار جواب داد: «اگر براستی می خواهید که من پادشاه شما شوم، پس بیائید در سایۀ من پناه ببرید. در غیر اینصورت می خواهم که از خارهای من آتش برخیزد و همه سَروهای لبنان را بسوزاند.»
16“Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands
16پس حالا خوب فکر کنید که آیا با انتخاب اَبیمَلِک به عنوان پادشاه خود، کار درستی کرده اید؟ و آیا به جِدعُون و خاندانش احسان نموده اید و کاریکه لایق شان او باشد بعمل آورده اید؟
17(for my father fought for you, and risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
17پدر من برای شما و بخاطر شما جنگ کرد. زندگی خود را بخطر انداخت و شما را از دست مدیانی ها نجات داد.
18and you have risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);
18اما شما امروز برضد خانوادۀ پدرم برخاسته اید و هفتاد پسر او را بر روی یک سنگ کُشتید. و اَبیمَلِک را که پسر کنیز او و فقط بخاطری که یکی از اقوام شما است به عنوان پادشاه خود انتخاب کردید.
19if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:
19و اگر شما یقین دارید که از روی راستی و اخلاص این کار را کرده اید و احترام جِدعُون را بجا آورده اید، پس من هم آرزو می کنم که شما و اَبیمَلِک باهم خوش باشید.
20but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.”
20در غیر آن می خواهم که آتشی از اَبیمَلِک برخیزد و همه باشندگان شَکیم و بیت ملو را بسوزاند. و آتش مردم شَکیم و بیت ملو هم اَبیمَلِک را از بین ببرد.»
21Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
21بعد یوتام از آنجا گریخت و از ترس برادر خود، اَبیمَلِک به بئیر فرار کرد.
22Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.
22اَبیمَلِک مدت سه سال بر اسرائیل سلطنت کرد.
23God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
23آنگاه خداوند بین اَبیمَلِک و مردم شَکیم دشمنی انداخت و مردم شَکیم به اَبیمَلِک خیانت کردند.
24that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.
24و پس از این حادثه اَبیمَلِک و باشندگان شَکیم که در قتل هفتاد پسر جِدعُون با او همدست بودند، به جزای اعمال خود رسیدند.
25The men of Shechem set an ambush for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.
25مردم شَکیم برای حمله بر اَبیمَلِک در امتداد جاده ای که به بالای کوه می رفت، کمین کردند. (در عین حالیکه آن ها منتظر بودند، هر کسیکه از آنجا می گذشت، تاراج می شد.) اما کسی از دسیسۀ مردم، به اَبیمَلِک خبر داد.
26Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.
26جَعل، پسر عابد با خویشاوندان خود به شَکیم آمد و در آنجا در بین مردم شهرت و اعتبار زیادی پیدا کرد.
27They went out into the field, and harvested their vineyards, and trod the grapes, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
27یکروز آن ها بیرون رفتند و از تاکستان، انگور چیدند و جشن گرفتند. بعد به معبد خدای خود رفتند. خوردند و نوشیدند و اَبیمَلِک را مسخره کردند.
28Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?
28جَعل از مردم پرسید: «اَبیمَلِک کیست؟ و چرا ما مردم شَکیم خدمت او را بکنیم؟ آیا او پسر جِدعُون و نام معاون او زَبول نیست؟
29Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army, and come out!”
29ای کاش این مردم زیر دست من می بودند تا من اَبیمَلِک را از بین می بردم. و به اَبیمَلِک می گفتم: تمام لشکرت را جمع کن و به جنگ ما بیا.»
30When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
30اما وقتی زَبول، حاکم شهر، سخنان جَعل پسر عابد را شنید، بسیار قهر شد.
31He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.
31و پیامی به اَبیمَلِک در ارومه فرستاده گفت: «جَعل پسر عابد و خویشاوندان او به شَکیم آمده اند و مردم را بر ضد تو می شورانند.
32Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field:
32پس هنگام شب با همراهانت برو و پنهان شوید.
33and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early, and rush on the city; and behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.”
33و صبح روز دیگر، در وقت طلوع آفتاب بروید و به شهر حمله کنید. وقتیکه او و مردانش برای مقابله آمدند، آنوقت هر معامله ای که می خواهی با آن ها بکن.»
34Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
34پس اَبیمَلِک و همه کسانی که با او بودند شبانگاه رفتند و به چهار دسته تقسیم شده در کمین نشستند.
35Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.
35وقتی صبح شد جَعل بیرون رفت به دهن دروازۀ شهر ایستاد. و اَبیمَلِک هم با همراهان خود از کمینگاه بیرون شد.
36When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.”
36و چون جَعل آن ها را دید، به زَبول گفت: «آن مردم را می بینی که از کوه پائین می شوند؟» زَبول به او گفت: «تو سایۀ کوه را دیدی و گمان کردی که انبوه مردم است.»
37Gaal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”
37جَعل باز گفت: «ببین مردم بطرف ما روان هستند و یک گروه دیگر هم از راه بلوط معونیم می آیند.»
38Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”
38آنگاه زَبول رو بطرف او کرده پرسید: «کجاست آن لافهائی که می زدی؟ یادت می آید که می گفتی: «اَبیمَلِک کیست که ما خدمت او را بکنیم؟» اینها کسانی هستند که تو آن ها را تحقیر می کردی. پس حالا برو و با آن ها جنگ کن.»
39Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
39جَعل پیشاپیش مردم شَکیم برای جنگ با اَبیمَلِک رفت.
40Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.
40اَبیمَلِک او را شکست داد و او فرار کرد. بسیاری از مردم شَکیم تا به دروازۀ شهر زخمی افتادند.
41Abimelech lived at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
41اَبیمَلِک در ارومه سکونت اختیار کرد. و زَبول، جَعل را با وابستگانش از شَکیم بیرون راند تا دیگر در آنجا زندگی نکنند.
42It happened on the next day, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
42روز دیگر مردم شَکیم به صحرا رفتند و اَبیمَلِک خبر شد.
43He took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and behold, the people came forth out of the city; He rose up against them, and struck them.
43او مردان خود را جمع و به سه دسته تقسیم کرد و در صحرا کمین کردند. وقتی مردم را دیدند که از شهر بیرون می آیند، از کمینگاه خود خارج شدند و همه را بقتل رساندند.
44Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field, and struck them.
44اَبیمَلِک و همراهانش با عجله رفتند و به دهن دروازۀ شهر ایستادند تا مردم را نگذارند که به شهر داخل شوند. در عین حال دو دستۀ دیگر آن ها، بر کسانی که در صحرا بودند، حمله کردند و همه را کشتند.
45Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and killed the people who were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
45اَبیمَلِک تمام آن روز جنگ کرد تا اینکه شهر را به تصرف خود درآورد. همه کسانی را که در شهر بودند، از بین برد. شهر را ویران کرد و در آن نمک پاشید.
46When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.
46و چون مردمی که در نزدیک بُرج شهر بودند از واقعه خبر شدند، به قلعۀ معبد بَعلِ پیمان پناه بردند.
47It was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
47وقتی اَبیمَلِک اطلاع یافت که باشندگان برج شَکیم در یکجا جمع شده اند،
48Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done!”
48با همراهان خود به کوه صلمون بالا شد. تبری را به دست گرفته شاخۀ درختی را برید و آنرا بر شانۀ خود گذاشت. آنگاه به همراهان خود گفت: «زود شوید، کاری که من کردم شما هم بکنید!»
49All the people likewise each cut down his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire on them; so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
49پس هرکدام یک شاخۀ درخت را بریده بدنبال اَبیمَلِک رفتند. شاخه ها را بردند و در اطراف قلعه انباشته بر آن ها آتش روشن کردند. و همه مردم برج شَکیم که در حدود یکهزار مرد و زن بودند، هلاک شدند.
50Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
50بعد اَبیمَلِک به تاباز رفت. در آنجا اردو زد و آنرا تصرف کرد.
51But there was a strong tower within the city, and there fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower.
51اما در بین شهر یک برج بسیار مستحکم وجود داشت. پس همه مردم ـ زن و مرد ـ به داخل آن برج رفتند. دروازه ها را بستند. و چند نفر برای دیده بانی بر بام برج بالا شدند.
52Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
52اَبیمَلِک بطرف برج برای حمله رفت. وقتی به دروازۀ برج نزدیک شد تا آنرا آتش بزند،
53A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and broke his skull.
53در این وقت یکی از زنها آسیا سنگی را گرفته بر سر اَبیمَلِک انداخت و کاسۀ سرش را شکست.
54Then he called hastily to the young man his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword, and kill me, that men not say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ His young man thrust him through, and he died.”
54اَبیمَلِک به جوان اسلحه بردار خود گفت: «شمشیرت را بِکَش و مرا بکُش، تا مبادا بگویند: یک زن او را کُشت.» پس آن جوان شمشیر خود را در او فروبُرد و او را کشت.
55When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his place.
55چون مردم اسرائیل دیدند که اَبیمَلِک مرده است همه به خانه های خود برگشتند.
56Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father, in killing his seventy brothers;
56به این ترتیب، خدا اَبیمَلِک را بخاطر گناهی که در مقابل پدر خود کرد و هفتاد پسر او را کشت به جزای اعمالش رساند.و همچنین بلای شرارت مردم شَکیم را بر سر خود شان آورد و لعنت یوتام پسر جِدعُون بر آن ها قرار گرفت.
57and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite on their heads: and on them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
57و همچنین بلای شرارت مردم شَکیم را بر سر خود شان آورد و لعنت یوتام پسر جِدعُون بر آن ها قرار گرفت.
