¹It happened that when Jesus had finished directing his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and preach in their cities.

¹عیسی این اوامر را به شاگردان خود داد و آنجا را ترک کرد تا در شهرهای اطراف تعلیم دهد و موعظه نماید.

²Now when John heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples

²وقتی یحیی در زندان از کارهای مسیح با خبر شد، دو نفر از شاگردان خود را نزد او فرستاده

³and said to him, “Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?”

³پرسید: «آیا تو همان شخصی هستی که قرار است بیاید، یا ما در انتظار شخص دیگری باشیم؟»

⁴Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:

⁴عیسی در جواب گفت: «بروید و آنچه را که می بینید و می شنوید به یحیی بگویید:

⁵ the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, Isaiah 35:5 the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. Isaiah 61:1-4

⁵کوران بینایی خود را باز می یابند، لنگان به راه می افتند و جذامیان پاک می گردند، کِران شنوا و مردگان زنده می شوند و به بینوایان مژده داده می شود.

⁶ Blessed is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me.”

⁶خوشا بحال کسی که در مورد من شک نکند.»

⁷As these went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

⁷در حالی که شاگردان یحیی از آنجا می رفتند عیسی دربارۀ یحیی شروع به صحبت کرد و به مردمی که در اطراف او ایستاده بودند گفت: «برای دیدن چه چیز به بیابان رفتید؟ برای تماشای نی ای که از باد می لرزد؟

⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in king’s houses.

⁸پس برای دیدن چه چیز رفتید؟ برای دیدن مردی که لباس ابریشمی و گرانبها پوشیده است؟ بدون شک جای چنین کسانی در قصر های سلطنتی است.

⁹ But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.

⁹پس شما برای دیدن چه چیز از شهر بیرون رفتید؟ برای دیدن یک نبی؟ بلی، به شما می گویم که او از یک نبی هم بالا تر است.

¹⁰ For this is he, of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ Malachi 3:1

¹⁰او کسی است که دربارۀ وی نوشته شده است: «اینست رسول من که او را پیش روی تو می فرستم و او راه را برای آمدن تو آماده خواهد ساخت.»

¹¹ Most certainly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptizer; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.

¹¹بدانید که کسی بزرگتر از یحیی به دنیا نیامده است. باوجود این کوچکترین شخص در پادشاهی خدا از او بزرگتر است.

¹² From the days of John the Baptizer until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. or, plunder it.

¹²از زمان یحیای تعمید دهنده تا به امروز پادشاهی خدا مورد حملات سخت قرار گرفته و جباران برای دست یافتن به آن کوشش می نمایند.

¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

¹³همۀ انبیا و تورات تا ظهور یحیی دربارۀ پادشاهی خدا پیشگویی کرده اند.

¹⁴ If you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.

¹⁴اگر اینها را قبول دارید، بدانید که یحیی همان الیاس است که باید می آمد.

¹⁵ He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁵اگر گوش شنوا دارید بشنوید.

¹⁶ “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call to their companions

¹⁶اما من مردمان این زمانه را به چه چیز تشبیه کنم؟ آن ها مانند کودکانی هستند که در بازار می نشینند و با صدای بلند به یکدیگر می گویند:

¹⁷ and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you didn’t dance. We mourned for you, and you didn’t lament.’

¹⁷«ما برای شما نی زدیم، نرقصیدید! ناله کردیم، گریه نکردید!»

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’

¹⁸وقتی یحیی آمد نه می خورد و نه می نوشید، ولی همه می گفتند: «او روح ناپاک دارد!»

¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children. NU reads “actions” instead of “children” ”

¹⁹وقتی پسر انسان آمد که می خورَد و می نوشد مردم می گویند: «ببینید، او یک آدم پُر خور، میگسار و دوست جزیه گیران و گناهکاران است!» باوجود این، درستی حکمت خدا بوسیلۀ نتایج آن به ثبوت می رسد.»

²⁰Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they didn’t repent.

²⁰آنگاه عیسی دربارۀ شهرهایی صحبت کرد که اکثر معجزات او در آن ها روی داده بود و مردم آن شهرها را به خاطر اینکه توبه نکرده بودند سرزنش نموده

²¹ “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²¹گفت: «وای بر تو ای خورَزین و وای بر تو ای بیتسَیدا، اگر معجزاتی که در شما انجام شد در صور و صیدون انجام می شد مدت ها پیش از این خط بینی کشیده، خاکستر نشین می شدند و توبه می کردند.

²² But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

²²اما بدانید که در روز قیامت برای صور و صیدون بیشتر قابل تحمل خواهد بود تا برای شما.

²³ You, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will go down to Hades. or, Hell For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until this day.

²³و اما تو ای کپرناحوم که سر به آسمان کشیده ای! به دوزخ سرنگون خواهی شد، زیرا اگر معجزاتی که در تو انجام شد در سدوم انجام می شد، آن شهر تا به امروز باقی می ماند.

²⁴ But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, on the day of judgment, than for you.”

²⁴اما بدان که در روز قیامت برای شهر سدوم بیشتر قابل تحمل خواهد بود تا برای تو.»

²⁵At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.

²⁵در آن وقت عیسی به سخنان خود ادامه داده گفت: «ای پدر، ای خداوند آسمان و زمین، تو را سپاس می گویم که این امور را از دانایان و خردمندان پنهان داشته و به ساده دلان آشکار ساخته ای.

²⁶ Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.

²⁶بلی ای پدر، خواست تو چنین بود.

²⁷ All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.

²⁷پدر همه چیز را به من سپرده است و هیچ کس جز پدر، پسر را نمی شناسد و هیچ کس پدر را نمی شناسد، بجز پسر و کسانی که پسر بخواهد پدر را به ایشان بشناساند.

²⁸ “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

²⁸ای تمامی زحمتکشان و گرانباران نزد من بیایید و من به شما آرامی خواهم داد.

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

²⁹یوغ مرا بر خود گیرید و از من تعلیم یابید، زیرا من نرمدل و فروتن هستم و جانهای شما آرامی خواهد یافت،زیرا یوغ من خفیف و بار من سبک است.»

³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

³⁰زیرا یوغ من خفیف و بار من سبک است.»
