¹In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

¹در آن زمان یحیای تعمید دهنده در بیابان یهودیه ظاهر شد و تعلیم داده می گفت:

²“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”

²«توبه کنید زیرا پادشاهی آسمانی نزدیک است.»

³For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.” Isaiah 40:3

³یحیی همان کسی است که اشعیای نبی دربارۀ او می گوید: «مردی در بیابان فریاد می زند: راه را برای خداوند آماده سازید و مسیر او را هموار سازید.»

⁴Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

⁴لباس یحیی از پشم شتر بود و کمربندی چرمی به کمر داشت و خوراکش ملخ و عسل صحرایی بود.

⁵Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.

⁵مردم از اورشلیم و تمام یهودیه و نواحی دریای اُردن پیش او می آمدند

⁶They were baptized or, immersed by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁶و به گناهان خود اعتراف می کردند و به دست او در دریای اُردن تعمید می گرفتند.

⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, or, immersion he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷وقتی یحیی دید بسیاری از پیروان فرقه های فریسی و صَدوقی برای تعمید آمده اند به آنها گفت: «ای مارها چه کسی شما را آگاه کرد تا از غضب آینده بگریزید؟

⁸Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance!

⁸پس اعمالی را که شایستۀ توبه باشد انجام دهید.

⁹Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

⁹در این فکر نباشید که پدری مانند ابراهیم دارید. بدانید که خدا قادر است از این سنگ ها برای ابراهیم فرزندانی بیافریند.

¹⁰“Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

¹⁰اکنون تیشه بر ریشۀ درختان گذاشته شده و هر درختی که میوۀ خوب به بار نیاورد بریده و در آتش افگنده خواهد شد.

¹¹I indeed baptize or, immerse you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. TR and NU add “and with fire”

¹¹من شما را در آب تعمید می دهم و این تعمید نشانۀ توبه شماست ولی کسی که بعد از من می آید از من تواناتر است و من لایق آن نیستم که حتی نعلین او را بردارم. او شما را با روح القدس و آتش تعمید خواهد داد.

¹²His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”

¹²او شاخی خود را در دست گرفته و خرمن خود را پاک خواهد کرد. گندم را در انبار جمع می کند، ولی کاه را در آتش خاموش نشدنی خواهد سوزانید.»

¹³Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

¹³در آن وقت عیسی از جلیل به دریای اُردن پیش یحیی آمد تا به دست او تعمید گیرد.

¹⁴But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”

¹⁴یحیی کوشش کرد عیسی از این کار بگذرد و گفت: «آیا تو پیش من می آئی؟ من احتیاج دارم به دست تو تعمید بگیرم.»

¹⁵But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.

¹⁵عیسی در جواب گفت: «بگذار فعلاً اینطور باشد، زیرا به این وسیله احکام شریعت را به جا خواهیم آورد.» پس یحیی قبول کرد.

¹⁶Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.

¹⁶عیسی پس از تعمید، فوراً از آب بیرون آمد. آنگاه آسمان باز شد و او روح خدا را دید که مانند کبوتری نازل شده به سوی او می آید.و صدایی از آسمان شنیده شد که می گفت: «این است پسر عزیز من که از او خوش هستم.»

¹⁷Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

¹⁷و صدایی از آسمان شنیده شد که می گفت: «این است پسر عزیز من که از او خوش هستم.»
