1Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab:
1در زمانی که قوم اسرائیل در شِطیم می زیستند، مردان آن ها با دختران موآب زنا می کردند.
2for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
2این دخترها آن ها را دعوت می کردند تا در مراسم قربانی که برای بتهای شان برگزار می شد شرکت کنند. مردان اسرائیلی گوشت قربانی را می خوردند و بتهای شان را می پرستیدند.
3Israel joined himself to Baal Peor: and the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel.
3به مرور زمان تمام قوم اسرائیل به پرستش بت بعل فغور شروع کردند. بنابران، خشم خداوند بشدت بر قوم اسرائیل افروخته شد
4Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.”
4و به موسی فرمود: «همۀ سرکردگان قبایل اسرائیل را در روز روشن در حضور من اعدام کنید تا خشم سهمگین من از سر قوم اسرائیل دور شود.»
5Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”
5موسی به قضات اسرائیل گفت: «تمام کسانی را که بت بعل فغور را پرستش کرده اند اعدام کنید.»
6Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
6سپس یکی از مردان اسرائیلی در برابر چشمان موسی و تمام مردمی که در پیشروی خیمۀ عبادت گریه می کردند، یک زن مدیانی را با خود به اردوگاه آورد.
7When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;
7وقتی فینِحاس، پسر اَلِعازار، نواسۀ هارون کاهن این را دید، نیزه ای را به دست گرفت
8and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
8و بدنبال آن مرد بدرون خیمه رفت و نیزه را در بدن هردوی آن ها فروبُرد و به این ترتیب بلا از سر مردم اسرائیل رفع شد.
9Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
9اما با آنهم بیست و چهار هزار نفر شان در اثر آن بلا تلف شدند.
10Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
10خداوند به موسی فرمود: «فینِحاس، پسر اَلِعازار، نواسۀ هارون کاهن، قهر مرا فرونشاند. او نخواست که بغیر از من خدای دیگری را پرستش کند، بنابران، من هم قوم اسرائیل را تلف نکردم.
11“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.
11پس به او بگو که چون او حرمت مرا حفظ کرد و باعث شد که من گناه قوم اسرائیل را ببخشم، من با او یک پیمان ابدی می بندم که او و اولاده اش برای همیشه کاهن باشند.»
12Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace:
12نام مرد اسرائیلی که با آن زن مدیانی کشته شد زِمری بود. او پسر سالو، یکی از رؤسای قبیلۀ شمعون بود.
13and it shall be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”
13زن مدیانی هم کُزبی نام داشت و دختر صور، یکی از بزرگان مدیان بود.
14Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.
14خداوند به موسی فرمود:
15The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.
15«مدیان را سرکوب کن و همۀ شان را از بین ببر،زیرا آن ها با حیله و نیرنگ شما را گمراه ساختند و به پرستش بت بعل فغور تشویق کردند و واقعۀ مرگ کُزبی این امر را ثابت می سازد.»
16Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
16زیرا آن ها با حیله و نیرنگ شما را گمراه ساختند و به پرستش بت بعل فغور تشویق کردند و واقعۀ مرگ کُزبی این امر را ثابت می سازد.»
17“Harass the Midianites, and strike them;
18for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”
