1It happened, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi.”
1(H24:2)Kun Saul palasi filistealaisia vastaan tekemältään sotaretkeltä, hänelle kerrottiin, että Daavid oli En-Gedin autiomaassa.
2Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the rocks of the wild goats.
2(H24:3)Silloin Saul otti mukaansa Israelista kolmetuhatta valiosoturia ja lähti etsimään Daavidia ja hänen miehiään Kauriskallioiden itäpuolelta.
3He came to the sheep pens by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave.
3(H24:4)Tien varressa oli lammastarhoja ja luola, ja tultuaan niiden kohdalle Saul meni luolaan tarpeilleen. Mutta Daavid ja hänen miehensä istuivat luolan perällä.
4The men of David said to him, “Behold, the day of which Yahweh said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly.
4(H24:5)Miehet sanoivat Daavidille: "Nyt on tullut se päivä, josta Herra on sanonut sinulle: 'Minä jätän vihollisesi sinun käsiisi, niin että voit tehdä hänelle mitä tahdot.'" Silloin Daavid meni ja leikkasi salaa palasen Saulin viitan liepeestä.
5It happened afterward, that David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.
5(H24:6)Mutta sen tehtyään hän sai piston sydämeensä
6He said to his men, “Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh’s anointed, to put forth my hand against him, since he is Yahweh’s anointed.”
6(H24:7)ja sanoi miehilleen: "Herra varjelkoon minua tekemästä tällaista kuninkaalleni, Herran voidellulle! Varjelkoon Herra minua kohottamasta kättäni häntä vastaan, sillä hän on Herran voideltu!"
7So David checked his men with these words, and didn’t allow them to rise against Saul. Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
7(H24:8)Daavid piti miehensä aloillaan eikä päästänyt heitä Saulin kimppuun, ja niin Saul lähti luolasta jatkaakseen matkaansa.
8David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and showed respect.
8(H24:9)Sen jälkeen myös Daavid tuli ulos luolasta ja huusi Saulin perään: "Herrani, kuningas!" Kun Saul kääntyi katsomaan taakseen, Daavid kumartui kunnioittavasti maahan saakka
9David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to men’s words, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks your hurt?’
9(H24:10)ja sanoi Saulille: "Miksi kuuntelet ihmisten puheita, kun he sanovat: 'Daavid tahtoo sinulle pahaa'?
10Behold, this day your eyes have seen how that Yahweh had delivered you today into my hand in the cave. Some urged me to kill you; but I spared you; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is Yahweh’s anointed.
10(H24:11)Nyt voit omin silmin nähdä, että Herra jätti sinut tänään luolassa minun käsiini. Mieheni neuvoivat minua tappamaan sinut, mutta minä säästin sinut ja sanoin: 'En voi kohottaa kättäni kuningastani vastaan, sillä hän on Herran voideltu.'
11Moreover, my father, behold, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and didn’t kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it.
11(H24:12)Katso nyt, isäni, katso viittasi lievettä, joka on kädessäni! Koska leikkasin liepeen viitastasi mutta en tappanut sinua, täytyy sinunkin ymmärtää, etten tahdo sinulle pahaa enkä kapinoi sinua vastaan. Minä en ole rikkonut sinua vastaan, mutta sinä väijyt minua ja tahdot viedä minulta hengen.
12May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand shall not be on you.
12(H24:13)Herra olkoon tuomarina meidän välillämme. Hän kostakoon sinulle minun puolestani, mutta minä en sinuun koske.
13As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness;’ but my hand shall not be on you.
13(H24:14)Sanoohan vanha sananlaskukin: 'Paha on pahoista peräisin.' Minä en sinuun koske!
14Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A flea?

15May Yahweh therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”
15(H24:16)Herra olkoon tuomarina ja jakakoon meille oikeutta. Hän saa tutkia minun asiani ja puhua puolestani, ja hän on ratkaiseva riidan minun hyväkseni."
16It came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
16(H24:17)Kun Daavid lopetti puheensa, Saul sanoi: "Poikani Daavid, sehän on sinun äänesi!" Ja Saul puhkesi itkuun
17He said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you.

18You have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, because when Yahweh had delivered me up into your hand, you didn’t kill me.
18(H24:19)Sinä olet tänään osoittanut, että tahdot minulle vain hyvää. Kun Herra luovutti minut sinun käsiisi, et tappanut minua.
19For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may Yahweh reward you good for that which you have done to me this day.
19(H24:20)Kun joku kohtaa vihollisensa, hän ei päästä tätä suosiolla pois. Palkitkoon Herra sinulle hyvän työn, jonka tänään olet tehnyt minulle!
20Now, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.
20(H24:21)Nyt tiedän, että sinusta tulee kuningas ja että Israelin valtakunta pysyy lujasti käsissäsi.
21Swear now therefore to me by Yahweh, that you will not cut off my seed after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.”
21(H24:22)Vanno nyt minulle Herran kautta, ettet tuhoa minun jälkeläisiäni, sitten kun olen kuollut, etkä hävitä nimeäni isäni suvun joukosta."
22David swore to Saul. Saul went home; but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
22(H24:23)Kun Daavid oli vannonut tämän, Saul palasi kotiinsa ja Daavid nousi turvapaikkaansa vuorille.
