¹When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

¹あなたが敵と戦うために出る時、馬と戦車と、あなたよりも大ぜいの軍隊を見ても、彼らを恐れてはならない。あなたをエジプトの国から導きのぼられたあなたの神、主が共におられるからである。

²It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

²あなたがたが戦いに臨むとき、祭司は進み出て民に告げて、

³and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don’t let your heart faint; don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;

³彼らに言わなければならない、『イスラエルよ聞け。あなたがたは、きょう、敵と戦おうとしている。気おくれしてはならない。恐れてはならない。あわててはならない。彼らに驚いてはならない。

⁴for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”

⁴あなたがたの神、主が共に行かれ、あなたがたのために敵と戦って、あなたがたを救われるからである』。

⁵The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

⁵次につかさたちは民に告げて言わなければならない。『新しい家を建てて、まだそれをささげていない者があれば、その人を家に帰らせなければならない。そうしなければ、彼が戦いに死んだとき、ほかの人がそれをささげるようになるであろう。

⁶What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit.

⁶ぶどう畑を作って、まだその実を食べていない者があれば、その人を家に帰らせなければならない。そうしなければ彼が戦いに死んだとき、ほかの人がそれを食べるようになるであろう。

⁷What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.”

⁷女と婚約して、まだその女をめとっていない者があれば、その人を家に帰らせなければならない。そうしなければ彼が戦いに死んだとき、ほかの人が彼女をめとるようになるであろう』。

⁸The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.”

⁸つかさたちは、また民に告げて言わなければならない。『恐れて気おくれする者があるならば、その人を家に帰らせなければならない。そうしなければ、兄弟たちの心が彼の心のようにくじけるであろう』。

⁹It shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people.

⁹つかさたちがこのように民に告げ終ったならば、軍勢のかしらたちを立てて民を率いさせなければならない。

¹⁰When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

¹⁰一つの町へ進んで行って、それを攻めようとする時は、まず穏やかに降服することを勧めなければならない。

¹¹It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you.

¹¹もしその町が穏やかに降服しようと答えて、門を開くならば、そこにいるすべての民に、みつぎを納めさせ、あなたに仕えさせなければならない。

¹²If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it:

¹²もし穏やかに降服せず、戦おうとするならば、あなたはそれを攻めなければならない。

¹³and when Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword:

¹³そしてあなたの神、主がそれをあなたの手にわたされる時、つるぎをもってそのうちの男をみな撃ち殺さなければならない。

¹⁴but the women, and the little ones, and the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its spoil, you shall take for a prey to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you.

¹⁴ただし女、子供、家畜およびすべて町のうちにあるもの、すなわちぶんどり物は皆、戦利品として取ることができる。また敵からぶんどった物はあなたの神、主が賜わったものだから、あなたはそれを用いることができる。

¹⁵Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

¹⁵遠く離れている町々、すなわちこれらの国々に属さない町々には、すべてこのようにしなければならない。

¹⁶But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;

¹⁶ただし、あなたの神、主が嗣業として与えられるこれらの民の町々では、息のある者をひとりも生かしておいてはならない。

¹⁷but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you;

¹⁷すなわちヘテびと、アモリびと、カナンびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとはみな滅ぼして、あなたの神、主が命じられたとおりにしなければならない。

¹⁸that they not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God.

¹⁸これは彼らがその神々を拝んでおこなったすべての憎むべき事を、あなたがたに教えて、それを行わせ、あなたがたの神、主に罪を犯させることのないためである。

¹⁹When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of you?

¹⁹長く町を攻め囲んで、それを取ろうとする時でも、おのをふるって、そこの木を切り枯らしてはならない。それはあなたの食となるものだから、切り倒してはならない。あなたは田野の木までも、人のように攻めなければならないであろうか。ただし実を結ばない木とわかっている木は切り倒して、あなたと戦っている町にむかい、それをもってとりでを築き、陥落するまで、それを攻めることができる。

²⁰Only the trees of which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it fall.

²⁰ただし実を結ばない木とわかっている木は切り倒して、あなたと戦っている町にむかい、それをもってとりでを築き、陥落するまで、それを攻めることができる。
