⁴They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”

⁴彼らはまた言った、「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう。そしてわれわれは名を上げて、全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」。

⁵Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.

⁵時に主は下って、人の子たちの建てる町と塔とを見て、

⁶Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do.

⁶言われた、「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた。彼らがしようとする事は、もはや何事もとどめ得ないであろう。

⁷Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

⁷さあ、われわれは下って行って、そこで彼らの言葉を乱し、互に言葉が通じないようにしよう」。

⁸So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.

⁸こうして主が彼らをそこから全地のおもてに散らされたので、彼らは町を建てるのをやめた。

⁹Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.

⁹これによってその町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を乱されたからである。主はそこから彼らを全地のおもてに散らされた。

²⁹アブラムとナホルは妻をめとった。アブラムの妻の名はサライといい、ナホルの妻の名はミルカといってハランの娘である。ハランはミルカの父、またイスカの父である。

³⁰Sarai was barren. She had no child.

³⁰サライはうまずめで、子がなかった。

³¹Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife. They went from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran and lived there.

³¹テラはその子アブラムと、ハランの子である孫ロトと、子アブラムの妻である嫁サライとを連れて、カナンの地へ行こうとカルデヤのウルを出たが、ハランに着いてそこに住んだ。テラの年は二百五歳であった。テラはハランで死んだ。
