¹Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

¹主はヨシュアに言われた、「恐れてはならない、おののいてはならない。いくさびとを皆、率い、立って、アイに攻め上りなさい。わたしはアイの王とその民、その町、その地をあなたの手に授ける。

²You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except its spoil and its livestock, you shall take for a plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

²あなたは、さきにエリコとその王にしたとおり、アイとその王とにしなければならない。ただし、ぶんどり物と家畜とは戦利品としてあなたがたのものとすることができるであろう。あなたはまず、町のうしろに伏兵を置きなさい」。

³So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night.

³ヨシュアは立って、すべてのいくさびとと共に、アイに攻め上ろうとして、まず大勇士三万人を選び、それを夜のうちにつかわした。

⁴He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

⁴ヨシュアは彼らに命じて言った、「あなたがたは町に向かって、町のうしろに伏せていなければならない。町を遠く離れないで、みな備えをしていなければならない。

⁵I, and all the people who are with me, will approach to the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.

⁵わたしとわたしに従う民とは皆共に、町に攻め寄せよう。そして彼らが前のようにわれわれにむかって出てくるとき、われわれは彼らの前から逃げるであろう。

⁶They will come out after us, until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,

⁶そうすれば彼らはわれわれを追って出てくるであろうから、われわれはついに彼らを町からおびき出すことができる。彼らは言うであろう、『この人々はまた前のように、われわれの前から逃げていく』。こうしてわれわれは彼らの前から逃げるであろう。

⁷and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.

⁷その時、あなたがたは伏せている所から立ち上がって、町を取らなければならない。あなたがたの神、主がそれをあなたがたの手に与えられるからである。

⁸It shall be, when you have seized on the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to the word of Yahweh. Behold, I have commanded you.”

⁸あなたがたが、町を取ったならば、町に火を放ち、主が命じられたようにしなければならない。わたしはこう、あなたがたに命じるのである」。

⁹Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night.

⁹そうしてヨシュアが彼らをつかわしたので、彼らはアイの西方、ベテルとアイの間の待ち伏せする場所に行って身を伏せた。ヨシュアはその夜、民の中に宿った。

¹⁰Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

¹⁰ヨシュアは明くる朝、早く起きて、民を集め、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、民に先立って、アイに上っていった。

¹¹All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.

¹¹彼と共にいたいくさびとたちもみな上っていって、町の前に近づき、アイの北に陣を取った。彼らとアイの間には、一つの谷があった。

¹²He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

¹²ヨシュアはおおよそ五千人をとって、町の西方、ベテルとアイの間に、伏せておいた。

¹³So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

¹³こうして民の主力を町の北におき、しんがりを町の西においた。ヨシュアはその夜、谷の中で宿った。

¹⁴It happened, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

¹⁴アイの王はこれを見て、すべての民と共に、急いで、早く起き、アラバに行く下り坂に進み出て、イスラエルと戦った。しかし、王は町のうしろに、すきをうかがう伏兵のおることを知らなかった。

¹⁵Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

¹⁵ヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人々と共に、彼らに打ち破られたふりをして、荒野の方向へ逃げだしたので、

¹⁶All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

¹⁶その町の民はみな呼ばわり集まって彼らのあとを追い、ヨシュアのあとを追って町からおびき出され、

¹⁷There was not a man left in Ai or Beth El who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

¹⁷アイにもベテルにも残っているものはひとりもなく、みな出てイスラエルのあとを追い、町を開け放して、イスラエルのあとを追った。

¹⁸Yahweh said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

¹⁸その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「あなたの手にあるなげやりを、アイの方にさし伸べなさい。わたしはその町をあなたの手に与えるであろう」。そこでヨシュアが手にしていたなげやりを、アイの方にさし伸べると、

¹⁹The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.

¹⁹伏兵はたちまちその場所から立ち上がり、ヨシュアが手をのべると同時に、走って町に入り、それを取って、ただちに町に火をかけた。

²⁰When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

²⁰それでアイの人々が、うしろをふり返って見ると、町の焼ける煙が天に立ちのぼっていたので、こちらへもあちらへも逃げるすべがなかった。荒野へ逃げていった民も身をかえして、追ってきた者に迫った。

²¹When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and killed the men of Ai.

²¹ヨシュアとすべてのイスラエルびとは、伏兵が町を取り、町の焼ける煙が立ち上るのを見て、身をかえしてアイの人々を撃った。

²²The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

²²また町を取ったものは町を出て彼らに向かったので、彼らは、こちらとあちらとからイスラエルの中にはさまれた。こうしてイスラエルびとが彼らを撃ったので、生き残ったもの、逃げおおせたものは、ひとりもなかった。

²³They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

²³そしてアイの王を生けどりにして、ヨシュアのもとへ連れてきた。

²⁴It happened, when Israel had made an end of killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned to Ai, and struck it with the edge of the sword.

²⁴イスラエルびとは、荒野に追撃してきたアイの住民をことごとく野で殺し、つるぎをもってひとりも残さず撃ち倒してのち、皆アイに帰り、つるぎをもってその町を撃ち滅ぼした。

²⁵All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

²⁵その日アイの人々はことごとく倒れた。その数は男女あわせて一万二千人であった。

²⁶For Joshua didn’t draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

²⁶ヨシュアはアイの住民をことごとく滅ぼしつくすまでは、なげやりをさし伸べた手を引っこめなかった。

²⁷Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took for prey to themselves, according to the word of Yahweh which he commanded Joshua.

²⁷ただし、その町の家畜および、ぶんどり品はイスラエルびとが自分たちの戦利品として取った。主がヨシュアに命じられた言葉にしたがったのである。

²⁸So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day.

²⁸こうしてヨシュアはアイを焼いて、永久に荒塚としたが、それは今日まで荒れ地となっている。

²⁹He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening, and at the sundown Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.

²⁹ヨシュアはまた、アイの王を夕方まで木に掛けてさらし、日の入るころ、命じて、その死体を木から取りおろし、町の門の入口に投げすて、その上に石の大塚を積み上げさせたが、それは今日まで残っている。

³⁰Then Joshua built an altar to Yahweh, the God of Israel, in Mount Ebal,

³⁰そしてヨシュアはエバル山にイスラエルの神、主のために一つの祭壇を築いた。

³¹as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of uncut stones, on which no man had lifted up any iron. They offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, and sacrificed peace offerings.

³¹これは主のしもべモーセがイスラエルの人々に命じたことにもとづき、モーセの律法の書にしるされているように、鉄の道具を当てない自然のままの石の祭壇であって、人々はその上で、主に燔祭をささげ、酬恩祭を供えた。

³²He wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

³²その所で、ヨシュアはまたモーセの書きしるした律法を、イスラエルの人々の前で、石に書き写した。

³³All Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, who carried the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

³³こうしてすべてのイスラエルびとは、本国人も、寄留の他国人も、長老、つかさびと、さばきびとと共に、主の契約の箱をかくレビびとである祭司たちの前で、箱のこなたとかなたに分れて、半ばはゲリジム山の前に、半ばはエバル山の前に立った。これは主のしもべモーセがさきに命じたように、イスラエルの民を祝福するためであった。

³⁴Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

³⁴そして後、ヨシュアはすべての律法の書にしるされている所にしたがって、祝福と、のろいとに関する律法の言葉をことごとく読んだ。モーセが命じたすべての言葉のうち、ヨシュアがイスラエルの全会衆および女と子どもたち、ならびにイスラエルのうちに住む寄留の他国人の前で、読まなかったものは一つもなかった。

³⁵There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.

³⁵モーセが命じたすべての言葉のうち、ヨシュアがイスラエルの全会衆および女と子どもたち、ならびにイスラエルのうちに住む寄留の他国人の前で、読まなかったものは一つもなかった。
