¹It happened, when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it

¹さて、ヨルダンの西側の、山地、平地、およびレバノンまでの大海の沿岸に住むもろもろの王たち、すなわちヘテびと、アモリびと、カナンびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの王たちは、これを聞いて、

²that they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

²心を合わせ、相集まって、ヨシュアおよびイスラエルと戦おうとした。

³But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins, old and torn and bound up,

⁴自分たちも策略をめぐらし、行って食料品を準備し、古びた袋と、古びて破れたのを繕ったぶどう酒の皮袋とを、ろばに負わせ、

⁵and old and patched shoes on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.

⁵繕った古ぐつを足にはき、古びた着物を身につけた。彼らの食料のパンは、みなかわいて、砕けていた。

⁶They went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”

⁶彼らはギルガルの陣営のヨシュアの所にきて、彼とイスラエルの人々に言った、「われわれは遠い国からまいりました。それで今われわれと契約を結んでください」。

⁷The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us. How could we make a covenant with you?”

⁷しかし、イスラエルの人々はそのヒビびとたちに言った、「あなたがたはわれわれのうちに住んでいるのかも知れないから、われわれはどうしてあなたがたと契約が結べましょう」。

⁸They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”

⁸彼らはヨシュアに言った、「われわれはあなたのしもべです」。ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「あなたがたはだれですか。どこからきたのですか」。

⁹They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,

⁹彼らはヨシュアに言った、「しもべどもはあなたの神、主の名のゆえに、ひじょうに遠い国からまいりました。われわれは主の名声、および主がエジプトで行われたすべての事を聞き、

¹⁰and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

¹⁰また主がヨルダンの向こう側にいたアモリびとのふたりの王、すなわちヘシボンの王シホン、およびアシタロテにおったバシャンの王オグに行われたすべてのことを聞いたからです。

¹¹Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’

¹¹それで、われわれの長老たち、および国の住民はみなわれわれに言いました、『おまえたちは旅路の食料を手に携えていって、彼らに会って言いなさい、「われわれはあなたがたのしもべです。それで今われわれと契約を結んでください」』。

¹²This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.

¹²ここにあるこのパンは、あなたがたの所に来るため、われわれが出立する日に、おのおの家から、まだあたたかなのを旅の食料として準備したのですが、今はもうかわいて砕けています。

¹³These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our shoes have become old because of the very long journey.”

¹³またぶどう酒を満たしたこれらの皮袋も、新しかったのですが、破れました。われわれのこの着物も、くつも、旅路がひじょうに長かったので、古びてしまいました」。

¹⁴The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from the mouth of Yahweh.

¹⁴そこでイスラエルの人々は彼らの食料品を共に食べ、主のさしずを求めようとはしなかった。

¹⁵Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.

¹⁵そしてヨシュアは彼らと和を講じ、契約を結んで、彼らを生かしておいた。会衆の長たちは彼らに誓いを立てた。

¹⁶It happened at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.

¹⁶契約を結んで三日の後に、彼らはその人々が近くの人々で、自分たちのうちに住んでいるということを聞いた。

¹⁷The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.

¹⁷イスラエルの人々は進んで、三日目にその町々に着いた。その町々とは、ギベオン、ケピラ、ベエロテおよびキリアテ・ヤリムであった。

¹⁸The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.

¹⁸ところで会衆の長たちが、すでにイスラエルの神、主をさして彼らに誓いを立てていたので、イスラエルの人々は彼らを殺さなかった。そこで会衆はみな、長たちにむかってつぶやいた。

¹⁹But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

¹⁹しかし、長たちは皆、全会衆に言った、「われわれはイスラエルの神、主をさして彼らに誓った。それゆえ今、彼らに触れてはならない。

²⁰This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”

²⁰われわれは、こうして彼らを生かしておこう。そうすれば、われわれが彼らに立てた誓いのゆえに、怒りがわれわれに臨むことはないであろう」。

²¹The princes said to them, “Let them live, so they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.”

²¹長たちはまた人々に「彼らを生かしておこう」と言ったので、彼らはついに、全会衆のために、たきぎを切り、水をくむものとなった。長たちが彼らに言ったとおりである。

²²Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?

²²ヨシュアは彼らを呼び寄せて言った、「あなたがたは、われわれのうちに住みながら、なぜ『われわれはあなたがたからは遠く離れている』と言って、われわれをだましたのか。

²³Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be bondservants, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”

²³それであなたがたは今のろわれ、奴隷となってわたしの神の家のために、たきぎを切り、水をくむものが、絶えずあなたがたのうちから出るであろう」。

²⁴They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

²⁴彼らはヨシュアに答えて言った、「あなたの神、主がそのしもべモーセに、この地をことごとくあなたがたに与え、この地に住む民をことごとくあなたがたの前から滅ぼし去るようにと、お命じになったことを、しもべどもは明らかに伝え聞きましたので、あなたがたのゆえに、命が危いと、われわれは非常に恐れて、このことをしたのです。

²⁵Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”

²⁵われわれは、今、あなたの手のうちにあります。われわれにあなたがして良いと思い、正しいと思うことをしてください」。

²⁶He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.

²⁶そこでヨシュアは、彼らにそのようにし、彼らをイスラエルの人々の手から救って殺させなかった。しかし、ヨシュアは、その日、彼らを、会衆のため、また主の祭壇のため、主が選ばれる場所で、たきぎを切り、水をくむ者とした。これは今日までつづいている。

²⁷That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh, to this day, in the place which he should choose.

²⁷しかし、ヨシュアは、その日、彼らを、会衆のため、また主の祭壇のため、主が選ばれる場所で、たきぎを切り、水をくむ者とした。これは今日までつづいている。
