1It happened in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.
1そのころ、イスラエルに王がなかった時、エフライムの山地の奥にひとりのレビびとが寄留していた。彼はユダのベツレヘムからひとりの女を迎えて、めかけとしていたが、
2His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months.
2そのめかけは怒って、彼のところを去り、ユダのベツレヘムの父の家に帰って、そこに四か月ばかり過ごした。
3Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
3そこで夫は彼女をなだめて連れ帰ろうと、しもべと二頭のろばを従え、立って彼女のあとを追って行った。彼が女の父の家に着いた時、娘の父は彼を見て、喜んで迎えた。
4His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, retained him; and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.
4娘の父であるしゅうとが引き留めたので、彼は三日共におり、みな飲み食いしてそこに宿った。
5It happened on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”
5四日目に彼らは朝はやく起き、彼が立ち去ろうとしたので、娘の父は婿に言った、「少し食事をして元気をつけ、それから出かけなさい」。
6So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”
6そこでふたりは座して共に飲み食いしたが、娘の父はその人に言った、「どうぞもう一晩泊まって楽しく過ごしなさい」。
7The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.
7その人は立って去ろうとしたが、しゅうとがしいたので、ついにまたそこに宿った。
8He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines”; and they both ate.
8五日目になって、朝はやく起きて去ろうとしたが、娘の父は言った、「どうぞ、元気をつけて、日が傾くまでとどまりなさい」。そこで彼らふたりは食事をした。
9When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”
9その人がついにめかけおよびしもべと共に去ろうとして立ちあがったとき、娘の父であるしゅうとは彼に言った、「日も暮れようとしている。どうぞもう一晩泊まりなさい。日は傾いた。ここに宿って楽しく過ごしなさい。そしてあしたの朝はやく起きて出立し、家に帰りなさい」。
10But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him.
10しかし、その人は泊まることを好まないので、立って去り、エブスすなわちエルサレムの向かいに着いた。くらをおいた二頭のろばと彼のめかけも一緒であった。
11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.”
11彼らがエブスに近づいたとき、日はすでに没したので、しもべは主人に言った、「さあ、われわれは道を転じてエブスびとのこの町にはいって、そこに宿りましょう」。
12His master said to him, “We won’t turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”
12主人は彼に言った、「われわれは道を転じて、イスラエルの人々の町でない外国人の町に、はいってはならない。ギベアまで行こう」。
13He said to his servant, “Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”
13彼はまたしもべに言った、「さあ、われわれはギベアかラマか、そのうちの一つに着いてそこに宿ろう」。
14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.
14彼らは進んで行ったが、ベニヤミンに属するギベアの近くで日が暮れたので、
15They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge.
15ギベアへ行って宿ろうと、そこに道を転じ、町にはいって、その広場に座した。だれも彼らを家に迎えて泊めてくれる者がなかったからである。
16Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at evening: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
16時にひとりの老人が夕暮に畑の仕事から帰ってきた。この人はエフライムの山地の者で、ギベアに寄留していたのである。ただしこの所の人々はベニヤミンびとであった。
17He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”
17彼は目をあげて、町の広場に旅人のおるのを見た。老人は言った、「あなたはどこへ行かれるのですか。どこからおいでになりましたか」。
18He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no man who takes me into his house.
18その人は言った、「われわれはユダのベツレヘムから、エフライムの山地の奥へ行くものです。わたしはあそこの者で、ユダのベツレヘムへ行き、今わたしの家に帰るところですが、だれもわたしを家に泊めてくれる者がありません。
19Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything.”
19われわれには、ろばのわらも飼葉もあり、またわたしと、はしためと、しもべと共にいる若者との食物も酒もあって、何も欠けているものはありません」。
20The old man said, “Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don’t lodge in the street.”
20老人は言った、「安心しなさい。あなたの必要なものはなんでも備えましょう。ただ広場で夜を過ごしてはなりません」。
21So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink.
21そして彼を家に連れていって、ろばに飼葉を与えた。彼らは足を洗って飲み食いした。
22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!”
22彼らが楽しく過ごしていた時、町の人々の悪い者どもがその家を取り囲み、戸を打ちたたいて、家のあるじである老人に言った、「あなたの家にきた人を出しなさい。われわれはその者を知るであろう」。
23The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.
23しかし家のあるじは彼らのところに出ていって言った、「いいえ、兄弟たちよ、どうぞ、そんな悪いことをしないでください。この人はすでにわたしの家にはいったのだから、そんなつまらない事をしないでください。
24Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”
24ここに処女であるわたしの娘と、この人のめかけがいます。今それを出しますから、それをはずかしめ、あなたがたの好きなようにしなさい。しかしこの人にはそのようなつまらない事をしないでください」。
25But the men wouldn’t listen to him: so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning: and when the day began to dawn, they let her go.
25しかし人々が聞きいれなかったので、その人は自分のめかけをとって彼らのところに出した。彼らはその女を犯して朝まで終夜はずかしめ、日ののぼるころになって放し帰らせた。
26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.
26朝になって女は自分の主人を宿してくれた人の家の戸口にきて倒れ伏し、夜のあけるまでに及んだ。
27Her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
27彼女の主人は朝起きて家の戸を開き、出て旅立とうとすると、そのめかけである女が家の戸口に、手を敷居にかけて倒れていた。
28He said to her, “Get up, and let us be going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.
28彼は女に向かって、「起きよ、行こう」と言ったけれども、なんの答もなかった。そこでその人は女をろばに乗せ、立って自分の家におもむいたが、
29When he had come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
29その家に着いたとき、刀を執り、めかけを捕えて、そのからだを十二切れに断ち切り、それをイスラエルの全領域にあまねく送った。それを見たものはみな言った、「イスラエルの人々がエジプトの地から上ってきた日から今日まで、このような事は起ったこともなく、また見たこともない。この事をよく考え、協議して言うことを決めよ」。
30It was so, that all who saw it said, “There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
30それを見たものはみな言った、「イスラエルの人々がエジプトの地から上ってきた日から今日まで、このような事は起ったこともなく、また見たこともない。この事をよく考え、協議して言うことを決めよ」。
