¹Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, to Yahweh at Mizpah.

¹そこでイスラエルの人々は、ダンからベエルシバまで、またギレアデの地からもみな出てきて、その会衆はひとりのようにミヅパで主のもとに集まった。

²The chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen who drew sword.

²民の首領たち、すなわちイスラエルのすべての部族の首領たちは、みずから神の民の集合に出た。つるぎを帯びている歩兵が四十万人あった。

³(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) The children of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this wickedness happen?”

³ベニヤミンの人々は、イスラエルの人々がミヅパに上ったことを聞いた。イスラエルの人々は言った、「どうして、この悪事が起ったのか、われわれに話してください」。

⁴The Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered, “I came into Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

⁴殺された女の夫であるレビびとは答えて言った、「わたしは、めかけと一緒にベニヤミンに属するギベアへ行って宿りましたが、

⁵The men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house by night. They thought to have slain me, and they forced my concubine, and she is dead.

⁵ギベアの人々は立ってわたしを攻め、夜の間に、わたしのおる家を取り囲んで、わたしを殺そうと企て、ついにわたしのめかけをはずかしめて、死なせました。

⁶I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

⁶それでわたしはめかけを捕えて断ち切り、それをイスラエルの嗣業のすべての地方にあまねく送りました。彼らがイスラエルにおいて憎むべきみだらなことを行ったからです。

⁷Behold, you children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel.”

⁷イスラエルの人々よ、あなたがたは皆自分の意見と考えをここに述べてください」。

⁸All the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, neither will any of us turn to his house.

⁸民は皆ひとりのように立って言った、「われわれはだれも自分の天幕に行きません。まただれも自分の家に帰りません。

⁹But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by lot;

⁹われわれが今ギベアに対してしようとする事はこれです。われわれはくじを引いて、ギベアに攻めのぼりましょう。

¹⁰and we will take ten men of one hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and one hundred of one thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to get food for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have worked in Israel.”

¹⁰すなわちイスラエルのすべての部族から百人について十人、千人について百人、万人について千人を選んで、民の糧食をとらせ、民はベニヤミンのギベアに行って、ベニヤミンびとがイスラエルにおいておこなったすべてのみだらな事に対して、報復しましょう」。

¹¹So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

¹¹こうしてイスラエルの人々は皆集まり、一致結束して町を攻めようとした。

¹²The tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What wickedness is this that is happen among you?

¹²イスラエルのもろもろの部族は人々をあまねくベニヤミンの部族のうちにつかわして言わせた、「あなたがたのうちに起ったこの事は、なんたる悪事でしょうか。

¹³Now therefore deliver up the men, the base fellows, who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel.” But Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers the children of Israel.

¹³それで今ギベアにいるあの悪い人々をわたしなさい。われわれは彼らを殺して、イスラエルから悪を除き去りましょう」。しかしベニヤミンの人々はその兄弟であるイスラエルの人々の言葉を聞きいれなかった。

¹⁴The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

¹⁴かえってベニヤミンの人々は町々からギベアに集まり、出てイスラエルの人々と戦おうとした。

¹⁵The children of Benjamin were numbered on that day out of the cities twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

¹⁵その日、町々から集まったベニヤミンの人々はつるぎを帯びている者二万六千人あり、ほかにギベアの住民で集まった精兵が七百人あった。

¹⁶Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men left-handed; everyone could sling stones at a hair-breadth, and not miss.

¹⁶このすべての民のうちに左ききの精兵が七百人あって、いずれも一本の毛すじをねらって石を投げても、はずれることがなかった。

¹⁷The men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men who drew sword: all these were men of war.

¹⁷イスラエルの人々の集まった者はベニヤミンを除いて、つるぎを帯びている者四十万人あり、いずれも軍人であった。

¹⁸The children of Israel arose, and went up to Bethel, and asked counsel of God; and they said, “Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin?” Yahweh said, “Judah first.”

¹⁸イスラエルの人々は立ちあがってベテルにのぼり、神に尋ねた、「われわれのうち、いずれがさきにのぼって、ベニヤミンの人々と戦いましょうか」。主は言われた、「ユダがさきに」。

¹⁹The children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

¹⁹そこでイスラエルの人々は、朝起きて、ギベアに対し陣を取った。

²⁰The men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel set the battle in array against them at Gibeah.

²⁰すなわちイスラエルの人々はベニヤミンと戦うために出て行って、ギベアで彼らに対して戦いの備えをしたが、

²¹The children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites on that day twenty-two thousand men.

²¹ベニヤミンの人々はギベアから出てきて、その日イスラエルの人々のうち二万二千人を地に撃ち倒した。

²²The people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.

²²しかしイスラエルの民の人々は奮いたって初めの日に備えをした所にふたたび戦いの備えをした。

²³The children of Israel went up and wept before Yahweh until evening; and they asked of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I again draw near to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother?” Yahweh said, “Go up against him.”

²³そしてイスラエルの人々は上って行って主の前に夕暮まで泣き、主に尋ねた、「われわれは再びわれわれの兄弟であるベニヤミンの人々と戦いを交えるべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「攻めのぼれ」。

²⁴The children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

²⁴そこでイスラエルの人々は、次の日またベニヤミンの人々の所に攻めよせたが、

²⁵Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

²⁵ベニヤミンは次の日またギベアから出て、これを迎え、ふたたびイスラエルの人々のうち一万八千人を地に撃ち倒した。これらは皆つるぎを帯びている者であった。

²⁶Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before Yahweh, and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh.

²⁶これがためにイスラエルのすべての人々すなわち全軍はベテルに上って行って泣き、その所で主の前に座して、その日夕暮まで断食し、燔祭と酬恩祭を主の前にささげた。

²⁷The children of Israel asked of Yahweh (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

²⁷そしてイスラエルの人々は主に尋ね、――そのころ神の契約の箱はそこにあって、

²⁸and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease?” Yahweh said, “Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand.”

²⁸アロンの子エレアザルの子であるピネハスが、それに仕えていた――そして言った、「われわれはなおふたたび出て、われわれの兄弟であるベニヤミンの人々と戦うべきでしょうか。あるいはやめるべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「のぼれ。わたしはあす彼らをあなたがたの手にわたすであろう」。

²⁹Israel set ambushes all around Gibeah.

²⁹そこでイスラエルはギベアの周囲に伏兵を置き、

³⁰The children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

³⁰そしてイスラエルの人々は三日目にまたベニヤミンの人々のところに攻めのぼり、前のようにギベアに対して備えをした。

³¹The children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to strike and kill of the people, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goes up to Bethel, and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

³¹ベニヤミンの人々は出て、民を迎えたが、ついに町からおびき出されたので、彼らは前のように大路で民を撃ちはじめ、また野でイスラエルの人を三十人ばかり殺した。その大路は、一つはベテルに至り、一つはギベアに至るものであった。

³²The children of Benjamin said, “They are struck down before us, as at the first.” But the children of Israel said, “Let us flee, and draw them away from the city to the highways.”

³²ベニヤミンの人々は言った、「彼らは初めのように、われわれの前に撃ち破られる」。しかしイスラエルの人々は言った、「われわれは逃げて、彼らを町から大路におびき出そう」。

³³All the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Baal Tamar: and the ambushers of Israel broke forth out of their place, even out of Maareh Geba.

³³そしてイスラエルの人々は皆その所から立ってバアル・タマルに備えをした。その間に待ち伏せていたイスラエルの人々がその所から、すなわちゲバの西から現れ出た。

³⁴There came over against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was severe; but they didn’t know that evil was close on them.

³⁴すなわちイスラエルの全軍のうちから精兵一万人がきて、ギベアを襲い、その戦いは激しかった。しかしベニヤミンの人々は災の自分たちに迫っているのを知らなかった。

³⁵Yahweh struck Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin that day twenty-five thousand one hundred men: all these drew the sword.

³⁵主がイスラエルの前にベニヤミンを撃ち敗られたので、イスラエルの人々は、その日ベニヤミンびと二万五千一百人を殺した。これらは皆つるぎを帯びている者であった。

³⁶So the children of Benjamin saw that they were struck; for the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted the ambushers whom they had set against Gibeah.

³⁶こうしてベニヤミンの人々は自分たちの撃ち敗られたのを見た。そこでイスラエルの人々はギベアに対して設けた伏兵をたのんで、ベニヤミンびとを避けて退いた。

³⁷The ambushers hurried, and rushed on Gibeah; and the ambushers drew themselves along, and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.

³⁷伏兵は急いでギベアに突き入り、進んでつるぎをもって町をことごとく撃った。

³⁸Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the ambushers was that they should make a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city.

³⁸イスラエルの人々と伏兵の間に定めた合図は、町から大いなるのろしがあがるとき、

³⁹The men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to strike and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, “Surely they are struck down before us, as in the first battle.”

³⁹イスラエルの人々が戦いに転じることであった。さてベニヤミンは初めイスラエルの人々を撃って三十人ばかりを殺したので言った、「まことに彼らは最初の戦いのようにわれわれの前に撃ち敗られる」。

⁴⁰But when the cloud began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them; and behold, the whole of the city went up in smoke to the sky.

⁴⁰しかし、のろしが煙の柱となって町からのぼりはじめたので、ベニヤミンの人々がうしろを見ると、町はみな煙となって天にのぼっていた。

⁴¹The men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that evil had come on them.

⁴¹その時イスラエルの人々が向きを変えたので、ベニヤミンの人々は災が自分たちに迫ったのを見て、うろたえ、

⁴²Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel to the way of the wilderness; but the battle followed hard after them; and those who came out of the cities destroyed them in its midst.

⁴²イスラエルの人々の前から身をめぐらして荒野の方に向かったが、戦いが彼らに追い迫り、町から出てきた者どもは、彼らを中にはさんで殺した。

⁴³They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, and trod them down at their resting place, as far as over against Gibeah toward the sunrise.

⁴³すなわちイスラエルの人々はベニヤミンの人々を切り倒し、追い撃ち、踏みにじって、ノハから東の方ギベアの向かいにまで及んだ。

⁴⁴There fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valor.

⁴⁴ベニヤミンの倒れた者は一万八千人で、みな勇士であった。

⁴⁵They turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them to Gidom, and struck of them two thousand men.

⁴⁵彼らは身をめぐらして荒野の方、リンモンの岩まで逃げたが、イスラエルの人々は大路でそのうち五千人を切り倒し、なおも追撃してギドムに至り、そのうちの二千人を殺した。

⁴⁶So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword; all these were men of valor.

⁴⁶こうしてその日ベニヤミンの倒れた者はつるぎを帯びている者合わせて二万五千人で、みな勇士であった。

⁴⁷But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and stayed in the rock of Rimmon four months.

⁴⁷しかし六百人の者は身をめぐらして荒野の方、リンモンの岩まで逃げて、四か月の間リンモンの岩に住んだ。そこでイスラエルの人々はまた身をかえしてベニヤミンの人々を攻め、つるぎをもって人も獣もすべて見つけたものを撃ち殺し、また見つけたすべての町に火をかけた。

⁴⁸The men of Israel turned again on the children of Benjamin, and struck them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city, and the livestock, and all that they found: moreover all the cities which they found they set on fire.

⁴⁸そこでイスラエルの人々はまた身をかえしてベニヤミンの人々を攻め、つるぎをもって人も獣もすべて見つけたものを撃ち殺し、また見つけたすべての町に火をかけた。
