¹Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, “There shall not any of us give his daughter to Benjamin as wife.”

¹かつてイスラエルの人々はミヅパで、「われわれのうちひとりもその娘をベニヤミンびとの妻として与える者があってはならない」と言って誓ったので、

²The people came to Bethel, and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely.

²民はベテルに行って、そこで夕暮まで神の前に座し、声をあげて激しく泣いて、

³They said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?”

³言った、「イスラエルの神、主よ、どうしてイスラエルにこのような事が起って、今日イスラエルに一つの部族が欠けるようになったのですか」。

⁴It happened on the next day that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

⁴翌日、民は早く起きて、そこに祭壇を築き、燔祭と酬恩祭をささげた。

⁵The children of Israel said, “Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up in the assembly to Yahweh?” For they had made a great oath concerning him who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.”

⁵そしてイスラエルの人々は言った、「イスラエルのすべての部族のうちで集会に上って、主のもとに行かなかった者はだれか」。これは彼らがミヅパにのぼって、主のもとに行かない者のことについて大いなる誓いを立てて、「その人は必ず殺されなければならない」と言ったからである。

⁶The children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, “There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

⁶しかしイスラエルの人々は兄弟ベニヤミンをあわれんで言った、「今日イスラエルに一つの部族が絶えた。

⁷How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since we have sworn by Yahweh that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?”

⁷われわれは主をさして、われわれの娘を彼らに妻として与えないと誓ったので、かの残った者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいであろうか」。

⁸They said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?” Behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh Gilead to the assembly.

⁸彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルの部族のうちで、ミヅパにのぼって主のもとに行かなかったのはどの部族か」。ところがヤベシ・ギレアデからはひとりも陣営にきて集会に臨んだ者がなかった。

⁹For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead there.

⁹すなわち民を集めて見ると、ヤベシ・ギレアデの住民はひとりもそこにいなかった。

¹⁰The congregation sent there twelve thousand men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.

¹⁰そこで会衆は勇士一万二千人をかしこにつかわし、これに命じて言った、「ヤベシ・ギレアデに行って、その住民を、女、子供もろともつるぎをもって撃て。

¹¹This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has lain with a man.”

¹¹そしてこのようにしなければならない。すなわち男および男と寝た女はことごとく滅ぼさなければならない」。

¹²They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins, who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

¹²こうして彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの住民のうちで四百人の若い処女を獲た。これはまだ男と寝たことがなく、男を知らない者である。彼らはこれをカナンの地にあるシロの陣営に連れてきた。

¹³The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.

¹³そこで全会衆は人をつかわして、リンモンの岩におるベニヤミンの人々に平和を告げた。

¹⁴Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead: and yet so they weren’t enough for them.

¹⁴ベニヤミンの人々がその時、帰ってきたので、彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの女のうちから生かしておいた女をこれに与えたが、なお足りなかった。

¹⁵The people grieved for Benjamin, because that Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

¹⁵こうして民は、主がイスラエルの部族のうちに欠陥をつくられたことのために、ベニヤミンをあわれんだ。

¹⁶Then the elders of the congregation said, “How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?”

¹⁶会衆の長老たちは言った、「ベニヤミンの女が絶えたので、かの残りの者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいでしょうか」。

¹⁷They said, “There must be an inheritance for those who are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel.

¹⁷彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルから一つの部族が消えうせないためにベニヤミンのうちの残りの者どもに、あとつぎがなければならない。

¹⁸However we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, ‘Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.’”

¹⁸しかし、われわれの娘を彼らの妻に与えることはできない。イスラエルの人々が『ベニヤミンに妻を与える者はのろわれる』と言って誓ったからである」。

¹⁹They said, “Behold, there is a feast of Yahweh from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.”

¹⁹それで彼らは言った、「年々シロに主の祭がある」。シロはベテルの北にあって、ベテルからシケムにのぼる大路の東、レバナの南にある。

²⁰They commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

²⁰そして彼らはベニヤミンの人々に命じて言った、「あなたがたは行って、ぶどう畑に待ち伏せして、

²¹and see, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards, and each man catch his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

²¹うかがいなさい。もしシロの娘たちが踊りを踊りに出てきたならば、ぶどう畑から出て、シロの娘たちのうちから、めいめい自分の妻をとって、ベニヤミンの地に連れて行きなさい。

²²It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we didn’t take for each man his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, otherwise you would now be guilty.’”

²²もしその父あるいは兄弟がきて、われわれに訴えるならば、われわれは彼らに、『われわれのために彼らをゆるしてください。戦争のときにわれわれは、彼らおのおのに妻をとってやらなかったし、またあなたがたも彼らに与えなかったからです。もし与えたならば、あなたがたは罪を犯したことになるからでした』と言いましょう」。

²³The children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of those who danced, whom they carried off. They went and returned to their inheritance, built the cities, and lived in them.

²³ベニヤミンの人々はそのように行い、踊っている者どものうちから自分たちの数にしたがって妻を取り、それを連れて領地に帰り、町々を建てなおして、そこに住んだ。

²⁴The children of Israel departed there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.

²⁴こうしてイスラエルの人々は、その時そこを去って、おのおのその部族および氏族に帰った。すなわちそこを立って、おのおのその嗣業の地に帰った。そのころ、イスラエルには王がなかったので、おのおの自分の目に正しいと見るところをおこなった。

²⁵In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
