¹Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

¹ ای دوستان من، نمی‌خواهم از آنچه برای اجداد ما اتّفاق افتاد بی‌خبر باشید. درست است كه همهٔ آنها در زیر سایهٔ ابر بودند و همه از دریا عبور كردند

²and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

² و همه به عنوان پیروان موسی در ابر و دریا تعمید گرفتند

³and all ate the same spiritual food;

³ و همه از یک نان روحانی می‌خوردند

⁴and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

⁴ و از یک آب روحانی می‌نوشیدند؛ زیرا از صخره‌ای معجزه‌آمیز كه ایشان را دنبال می‌کرد، می‌نوشیدند و آن صخره مسیح بود.

⁵However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁵ ولی با وجود این، خدا از اكثر آنان خشنود نبود و به این سبب اجساد آنها در سرتاسر بیابان پراكنده شد.

⁶Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

⁶ همهٔ این چیزها برای ایشان اتّفاق افتاد تا برای ما عبرتی باشد تا ما مانند آنها آرزوی چیزهای پلید نكنیم.

⁷Neither be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” Exodus 32:6

⁷ مثلاً مانند بعضی از آنها بت‌پرست نباشید، چنانکه کتاب‌مقدّس می‌گوید: «قوم اسرائیل نشستند تا بخورند و بنوشند و برخاستند تا به لهو و لعب بپردازند.»

⁸Neither let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell.

⁸ مرتكب گناهان جنسی نشویم چنانكه بعضی از آنها مرتكب شدند و در عرض یک روز، بیست و سه هزار نفر از آنها مردند.

⁹Neither let us test the Lord, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.

⁹ خداوند را امتحان نكنیم! به طوری که بعضی از ایشان امتحان كردند و به وسیلهٔ مارها هلاک گردیدند.

¹⁰Neither grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.

¹⁰ علیه خداوند شكایت نكنیم، چنانکه بعضی از آنها چنین كردند و به دست فرشتهٔ مرگ نابود شدند.

¹¹Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.

¹¹ همهٔ این اتّفاقات به عنوان نمونه‌ای بر سر آنان آمد و برای تربیت ما به عنوان عبرت نوشته شد. زیرا ما در زمانهای آخر زندگی می‌کنیم.

¹²Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall.

¹² بنابراین هرکس گمان می‌کند استوار است، مواظب باشد كه سقوط نكند. وسوسه‌هایی كه شما با آن روبه‌رو می‌شوید،

¹³No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

¹³ وسوسه‌هایی است كه برای تمام مردم پیش می‌آید، امّا خدا به وعده‌های خود وفا می‌کند و نمی‌گذارد شما بیش از توانایی خود وسوسه شوید. خدا همراه با هر وسوسه‌ای راهی هم برای فرار از آن فراهم می‌کند تا بتوانید در مقابل آن پایداری كنید.

¹⁴Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

¹⁴ پس ای دوستان من، در مقابل بت‌پرستی ایستادگی كنید.

¹⁵I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say.

¹⁵ روی سخن من با شما، یعنی با روشنفكران است. دربارهٔ آنچه می‌گویم خودتان قضاوت كنید.

¹⁶The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ?

¹⁶ آیا مقصود از نوشیدن پیالهٔ پر از بركت كه خدا را برای آن سپاس می‌گوییم، سهیم شدن در خون مسیح نیست؟ و آیا وقتی نان را پاره كرده می‌خوریم، آیا مقصود ما سهیم‌شدن در بدن مسیح نیست؟

¹⁷Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.

¹⁷ همان طوری که یک نان وجود دارد، ما نیز اگرچه بسیاریم یک بدن هستیم زیرا همهٔ ما در خوردن یک نان شریكیم.

¹⁸Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?

¹⁸ دربارهٔ آنچه قوم اسرائیل كرد فكر كنید، آیا خورندگان قربانی‌ها در خدمت قربانگاه شریک نیستند؟

¹⁹What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?

¹⁹ پس مقصود من چیست؟ آیا اینكه خوراكی كه به بت تقدیم می‌شود، بالاتر از خوراکی‌های معمولی است و یا خود بت چیزی غیراز یک بت است؟

²⁰But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons.

²⁰ خیر، بلكه مقصود من این است كه بت‌پرستان آنچه را قربانی می‌کنند به دیوها تقدیم می‌نمایند نه به خدا و من نمی‌خواهم شما با دیوها شریک باشید.

²¹You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.

²¹ شما نمی‌توانید هم از پیالهٔ خداوند و هم از پیالهٔ دیوها بنوشید و شما نمی‌توانید هم بر سفرهٔ خداوند و هم بر سفرهٔ دیوها بنشینید.

²²Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

²² آیا می‌خواهیم خشم خداوند را برانگیزانیم؟ آیا ما از او قویتر هستیم؟

²³“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up.

²³ می‌گویید: «در انجام هر كاری آزادیم.» درست است، امّا هر كاری برای ما صلاح نیست. آری، همان‌طور كه می‌گویید در انجام هر كاری آزادیم، امّا هركاری مفید نیست.

²⁴Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good.

²⁴ هیچ‌کس در فكر نفع خود نباشد، بلكه در فكر نفع دیگران باشد.

²⁵Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience,

²⁵ برای اینکه وجدان شما آسوده باشد، گوشتی را كه در بازار فروخته می‌شود، بدون چون و چرا بخورید.

²⁶for “the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness.” Psalm 24:1

²⁶ زیرا «زمین و هر آنچه در آن است از آن خداوند است.»

²⁷But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience.

²⁷ و اگر شخصی بی‌ایمان شما را به خانهٔ خود دعوت كند و می‌خواهید بروید، هر غذایی كه پیش شما گذاشت بخورید و برای راحتی وجدانتان لازم نیست دربارهٔ آن چیزی بپرسید.

²⁸But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”

²⁸ امّا اگر او به شما بگوید: «این گوشت، گوشت قربانی است.» به‌خاطر آن کسی‌که شما را آگاه ساخت و به‌خاطر وجدان، آن غذا را نخورید.

²⁹Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience?

²⁹ مقصود من وجدان شما نیست، بلكه وجدان آن شخص. ولی شما خواهید گفت: «چرا طرز قضاوت دیگران آزادی عمل مرا محدود سازد؟

³⁰If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for that for which I give thanks?

³⁰ اگر من خوراک خود را با شكرگزاری می‌‌‌‌‌‌خورم، دیگر چرا باید برای آنچه شكرگزاری کرده‌ام مورد انتقاد قرار بگیرم؟»

³¹Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

³¹ هرچه می‌کنید، خواه خوردن، خواه نوشیدن و یا هر كار دیگری که می‌کنید، همه را برای جلال خدا انجام دهید.

³²Give no occasions for stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the assembly of God;

³² یهودیان یا یونانیان یا كلیسای خدا را نرنجانید. همان كاری را بكنید كه من می‌کنم: من سعی می‌کنم تمام مردم را در هر امری خشنود سازم و در فكر خود نیستم بلكه در فكر منفعت عموم هستم تا ایشان نجات یابند.

³³even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.

³³ همان كاری را بكنید كه من می‌کنم: من سعی می‌کنم تمام مردم را در هر امری خشنود سازم و در فكر خود نیستم بلكه در فكر منفعت عموم هستم تا ایشان نجات یابند.
