¹In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word;

¹ به همین طریق شما ای زنها، مطیع شوهرهای خود باشید تا چنانچه بعضی از آنها به كلام خدا ایمان ندارند، به وسیلهٔ رفتار شما ایمان آورند. بدون آنكه شما به آنها چیزی بگویید،

²seeing your pure behavior in fear.

² زیرا آنها رفتار نیک و خداترسی شما را خواهند دید.

³Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing;

³ زیبایی شما نباید در آرایش ظاهری باشد كه به آرایش مو و پوشیدن جواهرات و لباس زیبا بستگی دارد؛

⁴but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious.

⁴ بلكه زیبایی شما باید در باطن باشد. درون خود را با گوهر فنا ناپذیر یک روح آرام و ملایم بیارایید، زیرا این نوع زیبایی در نظر خدا ارزش بسیار دارد.

⁵For this is how the holy women before, who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:

⁵ به این طریق بود كه زنهای مقدّسی كه در قدیم به خدا توکّل داشتند، خود را زیبا می‌ساختند. آنها مطیع شوهران خود بودند،

⁶as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are, if you do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.

⁶ مثل سارا كه از ابراهیم اطاعت كرده و او را «ارباب» خطاب می‌‌نمود. پس اگر شما هم نیكوكاری كنید و از چیزی نترسید دختران او خواهید بود.

⁷You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers may not be hindered.

⁷ و شما نیز ای شوهران، باید رفتارتان با همسرتان همیشه با ملاحظه باشد و چون آنها جنس لطیف هستند و در فیض حیات با شما سهیم و شریک می‌باشند، با عزّت و احترام با آنها رفتار كنید، مبادا دعاهای شما مستجاب نشود.

⁸Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous,

⁸ خلاصه ای دوستان، یک‌فكر و یک‌دل باشید. یكدیگر را دوست بدارید و مهربان و فروتن باشید.

⁹not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult; but instead blessing; knowing that to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing.

⁹ بدی را با بدی و لعنت را با لعنت تلافی نكنید، بلكه به جای لعنت بركت بطلبید، زیرا خدا شما را دعوت كرده است تا بركت نصیبتان گردد.

¹⁰For, “He who would love life, and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.

¹⁰ زیرا كلام خدا می‌فرماید: «هرکه بخواهد زندگی خوب و روزهای خوشی داشته باشد، باید دهانش را از حرفهای زشت و لبانش را از دروغ نگه دارد.

¹¹Let him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him seek peace, and pursue it.

¹¹ بدی را ترک كرده نیكی كند و صلح و صفا را جسته و آن را دنبال نماید.»

¹²For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” Psalm 34:12-16

¹² «زیرا چشمان خداوند بر نیكان است، و گوشهای او آماده شنیدن دعاهای آنها، امّا از بدكاران روی‌گردان است.»

¹³Now who is he who will harm you, if you become imitators of that which is good?

¹³ پس اگر شما به انجام آنچه نیكوست اشتیاق دارید، چه كسی به شما آسیبی خواهد رسانید؟

¹⁴But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “Don’t fear what they fear, neither be troubled.” Isaiah 8:12

¹⁴ امّا اگر به‌خاطر نیكوكاری رنج می‌‌بینید، خوشا به حال شما! از تهدیدات مردم نترسید و نگران نباشید.

¹⁵But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear:

¹⁵ امّا احترام مسیح در دلهای شما باشد و او را خداوند خود بدانید و اگر كسی علّت امید شما را می‌پرسد، همیشه آماده جواب باشید،

¹⁶having a good conscience; that, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.

¹⁶ البتّه با ملایمت و احترام. وجدان شما همیشه پاک باشد تا حتّی اگر به شما توهین شود، کسانی‌که از رفتار نیک مسیحایی شما بد می‌گویند، از گفتهٔ خود شرمنده گردند.

¹⁷For it is better, if it is God’s will, that you suffer for doing well than for doing evil.

¹⁷ زیرا اگر خواست خدا بر این است كه شما زحمت ببینید، بهتر است كه به‌خاطر نیكوكاری باشد، نه برای بدكاری.

¹⁸Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

¹⁸ مثلاً خود مسیح، یک‌بار برای همیشه به‌خاطر گناه بشر مرد، یعنی یک شخص بی‌گناه در راه گناهكاران مرد تا ما را به حضور خدا بیاورد. او از لحاظ جسم كشته شد امّا از لحاظ روح به زندگی خود ادامه داد

¹⁹in which he also went and preached to the spirits in prison,

¹⁹ و در روح به نزد ارواح محبوس رفت و به آنها موعظه کرد.

²⁰who before were disobedient, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

²⁰ اینها همان كسانی بودند كه در آن ‌وقت كه نوح به ساختن كشتی مشغول بود و خدا با صبر و حوصله انتظار می‌کشید، اطاعت نكردند. عدّه‌ای كم، یعنی هشت نفر از آب گذشته، جان سالم بدر بردند.

²¹This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you—not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

²¹ این آب، نمونهٔ تعمیدی است كه اكنون شما را نجات می‌بخشد. منظور شست‌وشوی كثافات بدنی نیست، بلكه بیان كنندهٔ آرزوی وجدان پاكی است که مشتاق دیدن خداست و به وسیلهٔ رستاخیز مسیح نجات می‌باید. او به عالم بالا رفت و در دست راست خداست و تمام فرشتگان و قوّتها و قدرتهای آسمانی تحت فرمان او هستند.

²²who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.
