¹Saul reigned a year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

¹ شائول سی ساله بود که پادشاه شد و مدّت چهل سال بر اسرائیل سلطنت نمود.

²Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

² او سه هزار نفر از مردان اسرائیلی را انتخاب کرد که دو هزار نفر از آنها را با خود به مخماس و کوهستان بیت‌ئیل برد و هزار نفر را هم همراه پسرش یوناتان به جبعهٔ بنیامین فرستاد و بقیّه را به خانه‌هایشان فرستاد.

³Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba: and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”

³ یوناتان به اردوگاه فلسطینیان در جبعه حمله نموده، آنها را شکست داد. این خبر بزودی به گوش فلسطینیان رسید و شائول دستور داد که خبر جنگ را در همه‌جا با صدای شیپور اعلام کنند تا تمام عبرانیان بشنوند.

⁴All Israel heard that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.

⁴ چون مردم اسرائیل اطّلاع یافتند که شائول به اردوگاه فلسطینیان حمله کرده و فلسطینیان از بنی‌اسرائیل متنفّر شده‌اند، پس تمام قوم در جلجال به حالت آماده‌باش درآمدند.

⁵The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven.

⁵ فلسطینیان سی هزار ارابهٔ جنگی، شش هزار سرباز سواره و تعداد بی‌شماری همچون ریگ دریا، سرباز پیاده برای جنگ با اسرائیل آماده کرده در مخماس، در شرق بیت آون، اردو زدند.

⁶When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.

⁶ بنی‌اسرائیل از دیدن آن سپاه عظیم روحیهٔ خود را از دست دادند و خود را در غار‌ها و سوراخها یا بین صخره‌ها، قبرها و یا چاهها پنهان کردند.

⁷Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

⁷ بعضی از آنها هم از رود اردن گذشته به سرزمین جاد و جلعاد پناه بردند. در این وقت شائول در جلعاد بود و همراهانش از عاقبت جنگ می‌ترسیدند.

⁸He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel: but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

⁸ سموئیل قبلاً به شائول گفته بود که برای آمدن او یک هفته انتظار بکشد. چون آمدن او طول کشید، سربازان کم‌کم از اطراف او پراکنده می‌شدند.

⁹Saul said, “Bring here the burnt offering to me, and the peace offerings.” He offered the burnt offering.

⁹ پس شائول گفت: «قربانی‌های سوختنی و سلامتی را به حضور من بیاورید.» او مراسم قربانی سوختنی را انجام داد.

¹⁰It came to pass that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

¹⁰ در پایان مراسم قربانی، سموئیل از راه رسید و شائول به استقبال او رفت.

¹¹Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash;

¹¹ سموئیل پرسید: «این چه کاری بود که تو کردی؟» شائول جواب داد: «تو در وقت معیّن نیامدی و مردم هم از اطراف من پراکنده می‌شدند، به علاوه فلسطینیان هم در مخماس آمادهٔ حمله بودند.

¹²therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven’t entreated the favor of Yahweh.’ I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.”

¹² پس با خود گفتم فلسطینیان بزودی در جلجال به ما حمله می‌کنند، از طرفی رضامندی خداوند را هم کسب نکرده‌ام، پس مجبور شدم مراسم قربانی سوختنی را خودم انجام دهم.»

¹³Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.

¹³ سموئیل گفت: «تو کار احمقانه‌ای کردی چون دستور خداوند خدای خود را بجا نیاوردی. اگر تو فرمان خداوند خدای خود را انجام می‌دادی، سلطنت تو و نسل تو برای همیشه برقرار می‌ماند.

¹⁴But now your kingdom shall not continue. Yahweh has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.”

¹⁴ امّا چون تو از فرمان او اطاعت نکردی، سلطنت تو برقرار نمی‌ماند. خداوند شخص دلخواه خود را یافته، او را به سلطنت بر قوم خود خواهد گماشت.»

¹⁵Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.

¹⁵ آنگاه سموئیل جلجال را ترک نموده، به راه خود رفت و بقیّهٔ سربازان به دنبال شائول به جبعه، در سرزمین بنیامین رفتند. وقتی شائول سربازان خود را شمرد، دید که تنها ششصد نفر باقیمانده بودند.

¹⁶Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

¹⁶ شائول و پسرش، یوناتان و سربازان ایشان در جبعهٔ بنیامین اردو زدند و فلسطینیان در مخماس اردو زدند.

¹⁷The spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;

¹⁷ سپاه فلسطینیان به سه دسته تقسیم شدند. یک دسته از راه عُفره به سرزمین شوعال حرکت کرد،

¹⁸and another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

¹⁸ دستهٔ دوم به سوی بیت حورون و دستهٔ سوم به طرف سرحدی که مشرف به درّهٔ صبوعیم در نزدیکی بیابان است به راه افتاد.

¹⁹Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears”;

¹⁹ در آن روزها هیچ آهنگری در کشور اسرائیل یافت نمی‌شد، زیرا فلسطینیان به عبرانیان اجازه نمی‌دادند که شمشیر و نیزه بسازند.

²⁰but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his plowshare, mattock, axe, and sickle;

²⁰ پس هرگاه مردم اسرائیل می‌خواستند بیل، گاوآهن، تبر و یا داس خود را تیز کنند، بایستی پیش آهنگران فلسطینی می‌رفتند.

²¹yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the plowshares, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads.

²¹ دستمزد تیز کردن بیل و گاوآهن هشت تکهٔ نقره و داس و تبر و سوهان چهارتکهٔ نقره بود.

²²So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

²² در روز جنگ، به غیراز شائول و یوناتان هیچ یک از سربازان، شمشیر یا نیزه‌ای نداشتند. فلسطینی‌ها تعدادی از سپاهیان خود را فرستادند تا از گذرگاه مخماس دفاع کنند.

²³The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.
