¹Samuel said to Saul, “Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of the words of Yahweh.

¹ سموئیل به شائول گفت: «خداوند مرا فرستاد تا تو را برای پادشاهی اسرائیل مسح نمایم. پس اکنون به پیام خداوند متعال گوش بده

²Thus says Yahweh of Armies, ‘I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.

² که چنین می‌فرماید: 'وقتی‌که مردم اسرائیل از مصر خارج شدند و می‌خواستند از سرزمین عمالیق عبور کنند، آن مردم مانع عبور آنها شدند، اینک می‌خواهم عمالیقیان را به‌خاطر این‌کارشان مجازات کنم.

³Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

³ پس برو همهٔ آن مردم را از بین ببر. بر آنها هیچ رحم مکن، بلکه زن و مرد، کودکان و اطفال شیرخوار، گاوان، گوسفندان، شترها و الاغهای ایشان را هم زنده مگذار.'»

⁴Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

⁴ پس شائول سپاه خود را در طلایم برای جنگ آماده کرد. تعداد سربازان او دویست هزار پیاده از اسرائیل و ده‌ هزار نفر از یهودا بود.

⁵Saul came to the city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

⁵ شائول به شهر عمالیق نزدیک شده در یک وادی کمین گرفت.

⁶Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

⁶ بعد به قوم قینیان پیغام فرستاده گفت: «از مردم عمالیق جدا شوید وگرنه شما هم با آنها هلاک خواهید شد، زیرا وقتی‌که مردم اسرائیل از مصر خارج شدند، شما با آنها با مهربانی و خوبی رفتار کردید.» پس قینیان از مردم عمالیق جدا شدند.

⁷Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, that is before Egypt.

⁷ آنگاه شائول به عمالیقیان حمله کرده همه را از حویله تا شور که در شرق مصر است به قتل رساند.

⁸He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

⁸ اجاج، پادشاه عمالیق را زنده دستگیر کرد و دیگران را با شمشیر از بین بُرد.

⁹But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the cattle, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and wouldn’t utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

⁹ امّا شائول و مردان او اجاج را نکشتند و همچنین بهترین گوسفندان، گاوان و حیوانات چاق و چله و برّه‌ها و اجناس قیمتی را از بین نبردند. تنها چیزهای ناچیز و بی‌ارزش را نابود کردند.

¹⁰Then the word of Yahweh came to Samuel, saying,

¹⁰ بعد خداوند به سموئیل فرمود:

¹¹“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night.

¹¹ «من از اینکه شائول را به پادشاهی برگزیدم، متأسف هستم؛ زیرا او از من اطاعت نمی‌کند و فرامین مرا بجا نمی‌آورد.» سموئیل بسیار غمگین و متأثر شد و تمام شب به حضور خداوند گریه و زاری کرد.

¹²Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal.”

¹² صبحِ روز بعد خواست که به دیدن شائول برود. امّا شنید که شائول به کرمل رفته تا ستونی به یادگار خود بسازد و از آنجا به جلجال رفته است.

¹³Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by Yahweh! I have performed the commandment of Yahweh.”

¹³ وقتی سموئیل شائول را یافت، شائول به او گفت: «خداوند به تو برکت بدهد. ببین من فرمان خداوند را بجا آوردم.»

¹⁴Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”

¹⁴ سموئیل گفت: «پس این‌همه صدای گوسفند و بانگ گاوها چیست که می‌شنوم؟»

¹⁵Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.”

¹⁵ شائول جواب داد: «آنها را از مردم عمالیق به غنیمت گرفته‌اند. مردان من بهترین گوسفندان و گاوها را نکشتند تا برای خداوند خدای ما قربانی کنند امّا همهٔ چیزهای دیگر را بکلّی از بین بردیم.»

¹⁶Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what Yahweh has said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.”

¹⁶ سموئیل به شائول گفت: «خاموش باش! بشنو که خداوند دیشب به من چه فرمود.» شائول گفت: «بگو.»

¹⁷Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel;

¹⁷ سموئیل جواب داد: «آن وقت ‌که تو حتّی در نظر خودت شخص ناچیزی بودی، خداوند تو را به فرمانروایی قوم اسرائیل برگزید و تو را به پادشاهی اسرائیل مسح نمود.

¹⁸and Yahweh sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’

¹⁸ او تو را مأمور ساخته فرمود: 'برو عمالیقیان گناهکار را نابود کن و آن‌قدر بجنگ تا همه هلاک شوند.'

¹⁹Why then didn’t you obey the voice of Yahweh, but took the spoils, and did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh?”

¹⁹ پس چرا از فرمان خداوند اطاعت نکردی؟ چرا دست به تاراج و چپاول زدی و کاری را که در نظر خداوند زشت بود، به عمل آوردی؟»

²⁰Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

²⁰ شائول در جواب گفت: «من از امر خداوند اطاعت نمودم. وظیفه‌ای را که به من سپرده بود، تمام و کمال اجرا کردم. اجاج، پادشاه عمالیقیان را اسیر کرده آوردم و مردم عمالیق را بکلّی از بین بردم.

²¹But the people took of the spoil, sheep and cattle, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.”

²¹ امّا مردم بهترین گوسفندان، گاوان و اموالی را که باید از بین می‌بردند برای خود نگه‌ داشتند تا برای خداوند در جلجال قربانی کنند.»

²²Samuel said, “Has Yahweh as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Yahweh? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

²² سموئیل گفت: «آیا خداوند بیشتر از دادن قربانی‌ها و نذرها خشنود و راضی می‌شود یا از اطاعت از او؟ اطاعت بهتر از قربانی کردن است. فرمانبرداری بمراتب بهتر از چربی قوچ است.

²³For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of Yahweh, he has also rejected you from being king.”

²³ نافرمانی مثل جادوگری، گناه است. سرکشی مانند شرارت و بت‌پرستی است. چون تو از فرمان خداوند پیروی نکردی، بنابراین او هم تو را از مقام سلطنت بر کنار کرده است.»

²⁴Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Yahweh, and your words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

²⁴ شائول به گناه خود اعتراف کرده گفت: «بلی، من گناهکارم. از فرمان خداوند و حرف تو سرپیچی کرده‌ام، زیرا من از مردم ترسیدم و مطابق میل آنها رفتار نمودم.

²⁵Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Yahweh.”

²⁵ امّا خواهش می‌کنم که گناه مرا ببخشی و همراه من بیایی تا خداوند را پرستش کنم.»

²⁶Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of Yahweh, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

²⁶ سموئیل جواب داد: «من با تو بر نمی‌گردم! زیرا تو امر خداوند را بجا نیاوردی و خداوند هم تو را از مقام سلطنتِ اسرائیل برکنار کرده است.»

²⁷As Samuel turned about to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore.

²⁷ وقتی سموئیل می‌خواست از پیش او برود، شائول ردای او را گرفت و ردای او پاره شد.

²⁸Samuel said to him, “Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.

²⁸ سموئیل گفت: «می‌بینی، امروز خداوند، سلطنت اسرائیل را از تو پاره و جدا کرد و آن را به یک نفر دیگر که از تو بهتر است، داد.

²⁹Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.”

²⁹ آن خدایی که عظمت و جلال اسرائیل است دروغ نمی‌گوید و ارادهٔ خود را تغییر نمی‌دهد، زیرا او بشر نیست که تغییر عقیده بدهد.»

³⁰Then he said, “I have sinned: yet please honor me now before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship Yahweh your God.”

³⁰ شائول بازهم تمنّا کرده گفت: «درست است که من گناه کرده‌ام، امّا به‌خاطر احترام من در نزد مردم و نیز رهبران قوم برای پرستش خداوند خدایت، با من بیا.»

³¹So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped Yahweh.

³¹ سرانجام سموئیل راضی شد و با او رفت.

³²Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

³² بعد سموئیل گفت: «اجاج، پادشاه عمالیقیان را به حضور من بیاورید.» اجاج را با ترس و لرز آوردند، او با خود می‌گفت: «چقدر مرگ تلخ است!»

³³Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal.

³³ سموئیل گفت: «همان‌طور که شمشیر تو مادران را بی‌اولاد کرد، مادر تو هم مانند همان مادران بی‌اولاد می‌شود.» این را گفت و اجاج را در حضور خداوند در جلجال تکه‌تکه کرد.

³⁴Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

³⁴ سموئیل از آنجا به رامه رفت و شائول هم به خانهٔ خود به جبعه برگشت. سموئیل دیگر شائول را تا روز مرگش ندید، ولی همیشه به‌خاطر او غمگین بود و خداوند از اینکه شائول را به مقام سلطنت اسرائیل برگزیده بود، متأسف بود.

³⁵Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul: and Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

³⁵ سموئیل دیگر شائول را تا روز مرگش ندید، ولی همیشه به‌خاطر او غمگین بود و خداوند از اینکه شائول را به مقام سلطنت اسرائیل برگزیده بود، متأسف بود.
