¹The ark of Yahweh was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

¹ صندوق پیمان خداوند مدّت هفت ماه در کشور فلسطینیان ماند.

²The Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of Yahweh? Show us with which we shall send it to its place.”

² فلسطینیان، کاهنان و جادوگران خود را فراخوانده گفتند: «با صندوق پیمان خداوند چه کنیم؟ اگر آن را به جای خود بازگردانیم، با چه هدیه‌ای آن را بازگردانیم؟»

³They said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, don’t send it empty; but by all means return him a trespass offering: then you shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.”

³ آنها گفتند: «اگر می‌خواهید صندوق پیمان خدای اسرائیل را بفرستید دست خالی نفرستید، بلکه حتماً آن را همراه با قربانی گناه بفرستید. صندوق پیمان نباید بدون هدیه بازگردانیده شود. در آن صورت شفا می‌یابید و خواهید دانست که چرا خدا شما را تنبیه کرده است.»

⁴Then they said, “What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him?” They said, “Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, for the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

⁴ پرسیدند: «چه نوع قربانی گناه بفرستیم؟» آنها جواب دادند: «پنج مجسمهٔ طلایی از دمل و پنج مجسمهٔ طلایی از موش، یعنی یک هدیه به‌خاطر هر یک از حاکمان فلسطین بفرستید، زیرا این بلا بر شما و بر حاکمانتان یکسان آمده است.

⁵Therefore you shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and you shall give glory to the God of Israel: perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

⁵ شما باید مجسمهٔ موشها و دملها را که کشور شما را ویران می‌کنند، بسازید. و خدای اسرائیل را تکریم نمایید شاید او از تنبیه شما، خدای شما و کشور شما دست بردارد.

⁶Why then do you harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had worked wonderfully among them, didn’t they let the people go, and they departed?

⁶ شما نباید مانند مردم مصر و فرعون، سرسخت و سرکش باشید، زیرا آنها از فرمان خدا اطاعت نکردند و به قوم اسرائیل اجازهٔ خروج ندادند، پس خداوند آنها را با بلاهای گوناگون از بین برد.

⁷“Now therefore take and prepare yourselves a new cart, and two milk cows, on which there has come no yoke; and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home from them;

⁷ پس بروید و یک گاری نو آماده کنید و دو گاو شیری را که یوغ بر گردنشان گذاشته نشده باشد، به آن ارّابه ببندید. گوساله‌هایشان را از آنها جدا کنید و به طویله بازگردانید.

⁸and take the ark of Yahweh, and lay it on the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which you return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by its side; and send it away, that it may go.

⁸ سپس صندوق پیمان خداوند را بر گاری بگذارید و مجسمه‌های طلایی دمل و موشها را که به عنوان قربانی گناه می‌فرستید در یک صندوق جداگانه گذاشته در پهلوی صندوق خداوند قرار دهید. آنگاه گاوها را رها کنید تا هر جا که می‌خواهند بروند.

⁹Behold; if it goes up by the way of its own border to Beth Shemesh, then he has done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it was a chance that happened to us.”

⁹ اگر گاوها از سرحد کشور ما عبور کنند و به طرف بیت شمش بروند، آنگاه می‌دانیم که خدای بنی‌اسرائیل آن بلای هولناک را بر سر ما آورده است. اگر نه، معلوم می‌شود که آن بلاها، اتّفاقی بوده و دست خدا در آنها دخالتی نداشته است.»

¹⁰The men did so, and took two milk cows, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home;

¹⁰ پس آنها همین طور عمل کردند. دو گاو شیری را گرفته به گاری بستند و گوساله‌هایشان را در طویله از آنها جدا نمودند.

¹¹and they put the ark of Yahweh on the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors.

¹¹ صندوق پیمان خداوند را بر گاری گذاشتند و همچنین صندوقچه‌ای را که در آن مجسمه‌های طلایی دمل و موشها بود، در پهلویش قرار دادند.

¹²The cows took the straight way by the way to Beth Shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh.

¹² آنگاه گاوها بدون اینکه منحرف شوند مستقیم به طرف بیت شمش حرکت کردند. رهبران فلسطینیان تا سرحد بیت شمش به دنبال آنها رفتند.

¹³They of Beth Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

¹³ در این وقت مردم بیت شمش مشغول دروی گندم در دشت بودند. وقتی‌که چشمشان بر صندوق افتاد از دیدن آن بسیار خوشحال شدند.

¹⁴The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they split the wood of the cart, and offered up the cows for a burnt offering to Yahweh.

¹⁴ گاری در مزرعهٔ شخصی به نام یوشع که از ساکنان بیت شمش بود داخل شد و در آنجا در کنار یک سنگ بزرگ توقّف کرد. مردم چوب گاری را شکستند و با آن آتش روشن کردند و گاوها را به عنوان قربانی سوختنی قربانی کردند.

¹⁵The Levites took down the ark of Yahweh, and the coffer that was with it, in which the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to Yahweh.

¹⁵ چند نفر از طایفهٔ لاوی آمدند و صندوق پیمان خداوند و صندوق حاوی مجسمه‌های طلایی دمل و موشها را برداشته بر آن سنگ بزرگ قرار دادند. مردم بیت‌شمش در همان روز قربانی‌های سوختنی و قربانی‌های دیگر هم به حضور خداوند تقدیم کردند.

¹⁶When the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

¹⁶ حاکمان فلسطین پس از آنکه آن مراسم را دیدند، همان روز به عقرون برگشتند.

¹⁷These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering to Yahweh: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

¹⁷ آن پنج مجسمهٔ طلایی دمل که فلسطینیان به عنوان قربانی گناه به پیشگاه خداوند فرستادند از طرف پنج حاکم شهرهای مهم اشدود، غزه، اشقلون، جت و عقرون بودند.

¹⁸and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even to the great stone, whereon they set down the ark of Yahweh. That stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.

¹⁸ مجسمه‌های طلایی موش از طرف پنج شهر مستحکم و روستاهای بدون دیوار که به وسیلهٔ پنج حاکم فلسطینی اداره می‌شدند، فرستاده شده بودند. سنگ بزرگی که بر بالای آن صندوق پیمان خداوند را قرار دادند، تا به امروز در مزرعهٔ یوشع که از ساکنان بیت‌شمش باقی است.

¹⁹He struck of the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Yahweh, he struck of the people fifty thousand seventy men; and the people mourned, because Yahweh had struck the people with a great slaughter.

¹⁹ امّا خداوند هفتاد نفر از مردم بیت شمش را کشت، زیرا آنها به داخل صندوق پیمان خداوند نگاه کردند. مردم به‌خاطر اینکه خداوند آن هفتاد نفر را هلاک کرد، ماتم گرفتند.

²⁰The men of Beth Shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? To whom shall he go up from us?”

²⁰ مردم بیت شمش گفتند: «کیست که بتواند به حضور خداوند خدای مقدّس، بایستد؟ این صندوق را از اینجا به کجا بفرستیم؟» پس آنها قاصدانی را با این پیغام پیش مردم قریت یعاریم فرستادند: «فلسطینیان صندوق پیمان خداوند را بازگردانیده‌اند. بیایید و آن را نزد خود ببرید.»

²¹They sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath Jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of Yahweh; come down, and bring it up to yourselves.”

²¹ پس آنها قاصدانی را با این پیغام پیش مردم قریت یعاریم فرستادند: «فلسطینیان صندوق پیمان خداوند را بازگردانیده‌اند. بیایید و آن را نزد خود ببرید.»
