¹The men of Kiriath Jearim came, and fetched up the ark of Yahweh, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of Yahweh.

¹ چند نفر از قریت یعاریم آمدند و صندوق پیمان خداوند را گرفته به خانهٔ ابیناداب که بر روی تپّه‌ای قرار داشت بردند و پسرش العازار را به نگهبانی آن گماشتند.

²It happened, from the day that the ark stayed in Kiriath Jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after Yahweh.

² صندوق پیمان مدّت بیست سال در آنجا باقی ماند. در طول آن مدّت، تمام مردم اسرائیل به درگاه خداوند ناله و زاری می‌کردند.

³Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you do return to Yahweh with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts to Yahweh, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

³ آنگاه سموئیل به قوم اسرائیل گفت: «اگر واقعاً می‌خواهید از صمیم دل به سوی خدا بازگردید، پس خدایان بیگانه و بت عشتاروت را ترک کنید. تصمیم بگیرید که فقط از خداوند پیروی نمایید و فقط بندهٔ او باشید. آنگاه او شما را از دست فلسطینیان نجات می‌دهد.»

⁴Then the children of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served Yahweh only.

⁴ قوم اسرائیل قبول کردند و بُتهای بعل و عشتارت را از بین بردند و فقط به پرستش خداوند پرداختند.

⁵Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you to Yahweh.”

⁵ بعد سموئیل گفت: «همهٔ قوم اسرائیل را در مصفه جمع کنید و من به حضور خداوند، برای شما دعا می‌کنم.»

⁶They gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, and said there, “We have sinned against Yahweh.” Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.

⁶ پس آنها همگی در مصفه جمع شدند. از چاه آب کشیدند و به حضور خداوند ریختند و در آن روز همه روزه گرفتند و گفتند: «ما نزد خداوند گناهکار هستیم.» در این روز، سموئیل به رهبری بنی‌اسرائیل تعیین گردید.

⁷When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. When the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

⁷ وقتی فلسطینیان شنیدند که قوم اسرائیل در مصفه جمع شده‌اند، رهبران فلسطینیان سپاه خود را برای حمله علیه اسرائیل فرستادند. چون قوم اسرائیل شنیدند که فلسطینیان آمادهٔ حمله شده‌اند، ترسیدند.

⁸The children of Israel said to Samuel, “Don’t cease to cry to Yahweh our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.”

⁸ پس از سموئیل خواهش کرده گفتند: «به حضور خداوند خدای ما دعا کن که ما را از دست فلسطینیان نجات بدهد.»

⁹Samuel took a suckling lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt offering to Yahweh: and Samuel cried to Yahweh for Israel; and Yahweh answered him.

⁹ سموئیل یک برّهٔ شیرخواره را گرفته به عنوان قربانی سوختنی و کامل به حضور خداوند تقدیم کرد. بعد از طرف مردم اسرائیل به درگاه خداوند دعا کرد و خداوند دعای او را قبول فرمود.

¹⁰As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but Yahweh thundered with a great thunder on that day on the Philistines, and confused them; and they were struck down before Israel.

¹⁰ در هنگامی که سموئیل مشغول اجرای مراسم قربانی سوختنی بود، فلسطینیان برای حمله به اسرائیل نزدیکتر می‌شدند، امّا خداوند با صدای غرّش رعد از آسمان آنها را سراسیمه ساخت و در نتیجه قوم اسرائیل آنها را شکست دادند.

¹¹The men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and struck them, until they came under Beth Kar.

¹¹ لشکر اسرائیل آنها را از مصفه تا بیت‌کار تعقیب کرده، همه را هلاک نمودند.

¹²Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, “Ebenezer” means “stone of help.” saying, “Yahweh helped us until now.”

¹² بعد سموئیل سنگی را برداشته بین مصفه و سن قرار داد و گفت: «خداوند تا به حال ما را کمک کرده است.» پس آن سنگ را اَبَن عَزَر یعنی سنگ کمک نامید.

¹³So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the border of Israel. The hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

¹³ به این ترتیب فلسطینیان شکست خورده، دیگر هرگز پای خود را در سرزمین اسرائیل نگذاشتند، زیرا دست خداوند تا زمانی که سموئیل زنده بود، علیه آنها در کار بود.

¹⁴The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and Israel recovered its border out of the hand of the Philistines. There was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

¹⁴ شهرهای اسرائیلی، از عقرون تا جت که به تصرّف فلسطینیان درآمده بودند، دوباره به دست اسرائیل افتادند. ضمناً بین اسرائیلیان و اموریان، صلح برقرار شد.

¹⁵Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

¹⁵ سموئیل تا آخر عمر رهبری قوم اسرائیل را به عهده داشت.

¹⁶He went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places.

¹⁶ او هر سال به بیت‌ئیل، جلجال و مصفه می‌رفت و به کارهای مردم رسیدگی می‌کرد. بعد به خانهٔ خود در رامه برمی‌گشت و به امور قضاوت می‌پرداخت و در همان‌جا قربانگاهی برای خداوند ساخت.

¹⁷His return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Israel: and he built there an altar to Yahweh.
