¹Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

¹ رحبعام به شکیم رفت، زیرا تمام قوم اسرائیل برای مراسم تاجگذاری او جمع شده بودند.

²It happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon), that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

² یربعام، پسر نباط که از دست سلیمان به مصر گریخته بود، هنگامی‌که این خبر را شنید از مصر بازگشت.

³They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

³ مردم طایفه‌های شمالی به دنبال او فرستادند و همگی به دیدن رحبعام رفتند و به او گفتند:

⁴“Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”

⁴ «پدرت یوغ ما را سنگین کرد. پس اکنون وظایف و یوغ سنگینی را که پدرت بر ما نهاده، سبک کن و ما خدمتگذار تو خواهیم بود.»

⁵He said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” The people departed.

⁵ او به ایشان گفت: «سه روز دیگر نزد من بیایید.» پس مردم رفتند.

⁶King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?”

⁶ رحبعام پادشاه با ریش‌سفیدانی که مشاور پدرش سلیمان بودند، مشورت کرد و پرسید: «به نظر شما به این مردم چه پاسخی بدهم؟»

⁷They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”

⁷ ایشان به او پاسخ دادند: «اگر تو با این مردم مهربان باشی و ایشان را راضی کنی و با ایشان سخن خوب بگویی، آنگاه ایشان تا ابد بندهٔ تو خواهند بود.»

⁸But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

⁸ امّا او پیشنهاد بزرگسالان را رد کرد و با جوانانی که با او بزرگ شده بودند و اکنون او را خدمت می‌کردند، مشورت کرد

⁹He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter?’”

⁹ و از آنها پرسید: «چه پیشنهاد می‌کنید؟ چه پاسخی به این مردم بدهم که به من می‌گویند: یوغی را که پدرت بر ما نهاده سبک کن؟»

¹⁰The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.

¹⁰ جوانانی که با او بزرگ شده بودند، جواب دادند: «به آنهایی که به تو گفتند: بار سنگین پدرت را از دوش ما سبک بساز. چنین پاسخ بده: انگشت کوچک من ضخیمتر از کمر پدرم است و

¹¹Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”

¹¹ یوغ سنگینی را که پدرم بر دوش شما گذاشت من آن را سنگین‌تر می‌کنم. پدرم شما را با شلاق تنبیه کرد و من شما را با شلاق چرمی تنبیه می‌کنم.»

¹²So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”

¹² پس یربعام و همهٔ مردم، در روز سوم همان‌طور که پادشاه گفته بود، نزد وی رفتند.

¹³The king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,

¹³ پادشاه با خشونت به ایشان پاسخ داد. رحبعام پادشاه، پند بزرگسالان را نپذیرفت

¹⁴and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”

¹⁴ او طبق گفته جوانان با ایشان سخن گفت: «پدرم یوغ شما را سنگین کرد، امّا من به آن می‌افزایم. پدرم شما را با شلاق تنبیه می‌کرد، امّا من شما را با شلاق چرمی تنبیه خواهم کرد.»

¹⁵So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about of God, that Yahweh might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

¹⁵ پس پادشاه به مردم گوش نداد. این رویدادها به ارادهٔ خدا انجام می‌شد تا کلامی که خداوند به اخیای شیلونی دربارهٔ یربعام، پسر نباط فرموده بود، به حقیقت بپیوندد.

¹⁶When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.

¹⁶ هنگامی‌که همهٔ مردم دیدند که پادشاه به ایشان گوش فرا نمی‌دهد، به پادشاه چنین گفتند: «ما چه سهمی از داوود داریم؟ ما هیچ میراثی از پسر یَسی نداریم. ای مردم اسرائیل به خانه‌های خود باز گردید؛ اکنون، ای داوود، از خانهٔ خود نگهداری کن.» پس همهٔ مردم، به خانه‌های خود رفتند.

¹⁷But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

¹⁷ امّا رحبعام فقط بر اسرائیلیانی که در شهرهای یهودا بودند حکومت می‌کرد.

¹⁸Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

¹⁸ هنگامی‌که رحبعام پادشاه، هدورام را که سرپرست کارگران اجباری بود فرستاد، مردم اسرائیل او را سنگسار کردند و کشتند و رحبعام پادشاه با شتاب بر ارابهٔ خود سوار شد و به اورشلیم گریخت. پس از آن، مردم پادشاهی شمالی اسرائیل تا به امروز علیه خاندان داوود شوریده‌اند.

¹⁹So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
