¹Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom.

¹ چون یوآب پسر صرویه فهمید که پادشاه شوق بسیاری برای دیدن ابشالوم دارد،

²Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched there a wise woman, and said to her, “Please act like a mourner, and put on mourning clothing, please, and don’t anoint yourself with oil, but be as a woman who has mourned a long time for the dead.

² به دنبال زن زیرکی که در شهر تقوع بود فرستاد. به او گفت: «خود را به دروغ عزادار نشان بده. لباس عزاداری بپوش. سرت را شانه نکن و طوری خود را نشان بده که مدّت زیادی عزادار بوده‌ای.

³Go in to the king, and speak like this to him.” So Joab put the words in her mouth.

³ سپس نزد پادشاه برو و هر آنچه به تو می‌گویم به او بگو.» آنگاه به او یاد داد چه بگوید.

⁴When the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, showed respect, and said, “Help, O king!”

⁴ وقتی آن زن به حضور پادشاه آمد، در برابر او به علامت احترام روی به خاک نهاد و عرض کرد: «ای پادشاه، به من کمک کنید!»

⁵The king said to her, “What ails you?” She answered, “Truly I am a widow, and my husband is dead.

⁵ پادشاه پرسید: «چه می‌خواهی؟» زن جواب داد: «من زن بیوه‌ای هستم. شوهرم فوت کرده است.

⁶Your handmaid had two sons, and they both fought together in the field, and there was no one to part them, but the one struck the other, and killed him.

⁶ این کنیزت دو پسر داشت. آن دو در صحرا با هم جنگ کردند و در آنجا کسی نبود که آنها را از هم جدا کند. در نتیجه یکی از آنها کشته شد.

⁷Behold, the whole family has risen against your handmaid, and they say, ‘Deliver him who struck his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed, and so destroy the heir also.’ Thus they would quench my coal which is left, and would leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the surface of the earth.”

⁷ حالا تمام خانواده تقاضا دارند که من پسر دیگرم را به دست قانون بسپارم تا به‌خاطر قتل برادر خود کشته شود. اگر این کار را بکنم وارثی برای ما باقی نمی‌ماند و نام شوهرم از صفحهٔ روزگار محو می‌شود.»

⁸The king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give a command concerning you.”

⁸ پادشاه به زن گفت: «به خانه‌ات برو و من مشکل تو را حل خواهم کرد.»

⁹The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.”

⁹ زن گفت: «پادشاها! این گناه به گردن من و خانواده‌ام باشد و تو و خانواده‌ات عاری از هر گناه باشید.»

¹⁰The king said, “Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall not touch you any more.”

¹⁰ پادشاه گفت: «اگر کسی تو را تهدید کرد، او را به حضور من بیاور و من به تو اطمینان می‌دهم که کسی به تو صدمه‌ای نمی‌تواند برساند.»

¹¹Then she said, “Please let the king remember Yahweh your God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the earth.”

¹¹ آنگاه زن گفت: «پس به نام خداوند سوگند یاد کنید که از کشتن پسر دیگرم، توسط خویشاوندانم جلوگیری کنید.» پادشاه گفت: «به خداوند سوگند یاد می‌کنم که نمی‌گذارم حتّی یک تار موی پسرت کم شود.»

¹²Then the woman said, “Please let your handmaid speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Say on.”

¹² زن گفت: «ای پادشاه، اجازه بفرمایید که یک خواهش دیگر هم بکنم.» پادشاه پرسید: «چه می‌خواهی؟»

¹³The woman said, “Why then have you devised such a thing against the people of God? For in speaking this word the king is as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring home again his banished one.

¹³ زن گفت: «پس چرا این کار را در حق قوم خدا نمی‌کنید؟ پادشاه در این تصمیمی که دربارهٔ من گرفته مقصّر است، زیرا پسر خودش را که آواره است، نبخشیده و به خانه نیاورده است.

¹⁴For we must die, and are as water split on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

¹⁴ سرانجام همهٔ ما می‌میریم. زندگی ما مثل آب است که وقتی به زمین ریخت، جمع کردن آن غیر ممکن است. حتّی خدا نیز جان کسی را نمی‌گیرد، بلکه در عوض می‌کوشد تا جان گمشده‌ای را بازیابد.

¹⁵Now therefore seeing that I have come to speak this word to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and your handmaid said, ‘I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.’

¹⁵ ای پادشاه، دلیل اینکه من نزد شما آمده‌ام این است که مردم مرا ترساندند؛ امّا من با خود گفتم که به حضور پادشاه می‌روم و عرض خود را می‌کنم شاید پادشاه خواهش مرا بجا آورد

¹⁶For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

¹⁶ من فکر کردم تو ای پادشاه به عرایضم توجّه می‌کنی و مرا و پسرم را از دست آن کسی‌که می‌خواهد ما را از سرزمینی که خدا به ما داده است، جدا کند و از بین ببرد، رهایی می‌دهی.

¹⁷Then your handmaid said, ‘Please let the word of my lord the king bring rest; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. May Yahweh, your God, be with you.’”

¹⁷ من با خود گفتم که کلام پادشاه به من امنیّت می‌‌بخشد، زیرا پادشاه مانند فرشتهٔ خداوند است و فرق خوبی و بدی را می‌داند. خداوند پشت و پناهت باشد.»

¹⁸Then the king answered the woman, “Please don’t hide anything from me that I ask you.” The woman said, “Let my lord the king now speak.”

¹⁸ آنگاه پادشاه به آن زن گفت: «یک سؤال از تو می‌کنم و تو باید صادقانه جواب بدهی.» زن گفت: «بفرمایید.»

¹⁹The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Joab, he urged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid;

¹⁹ پادشاه پرسید: «آیا یوآب تو را به اینجا فرستاد؟» زن جواب داد: «عمر پادشاه دراز باد! من نمی‌خواهم چیزی را از پادشاه پنهان کنم. بله، یوآب مرا به اینجا فرستاد و آنچه را که به شما گفتم او به من یاد داد.

²⁰to change the face of the matter has your servant Joab done this thing. My lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.”

²⁰ او این کار را کرد تا منظور خود را به طور غیر مستقیم به عرض پادشاه برساند. امّا روشن شد که پادشاه مانند فرشتهٔ خداوند، خردمند و دانا و از همهٔ رویدادها باخبر است.»

²¹The king said to Joab, “Behold now, I have done this thing. Go therefore, bring the young man Absalom back.”

²¹ آنگاه پادشاه به یوآب گفت: «من تصمیم گرفتم که آنچه را که تو می‌خواهی انجام دهم. برو و ابشالوم را بیاور.»

²²Joab fell to the ground on his face, showed respect, and blessed the king. Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord, king, in that the king has performed the request of his servant.”

²² یوآب خود را بر روی زمین افکند و تعظیم کرد و گفت: «پادشاها! خداوند شما را برکت دهد! امروز به این خدمتکار معلوم شد که پادشاه از من رضایت دارند، زیرا خواهش من را قبول فرمودند.»

²³So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

²³ پس یوآب برخاست و به جشور رفت و ابشالوم را به اورشلیم آورد.

²⁴The king said, “Let him return to his own house, but let him not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, and didn’t see the king’s face.

²⁴ پادشاه گفت: «او را به خانه‌اش ببر و به اینجا نیاور. من نمی‌خواهم او را ببینم.» به این ترتیب ابشالوم در خانهٔ خود زندگی کرد و دیگر پادشاه را ندید.

²⁵Now in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

²⁵ در اسرائیل کسی به زیبایی ابشالوم پیدا نمی‌شد. از فرق سر تا کف پا هیچ‌گونه عیبی در او نبود.

²⁶When he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year’s end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it); he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king’s weight.

²⁶ او موی سر خود را سالانه یک‌بار کوتاه می‌کرد. زیرا در مدّت یک سال آن‌قدر بلند و سنگین می‌شد که وزن آن به بیش از دو کیلوگرم می‌رسید.

²⁷To Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a beautiful face.

²⁷ ابشالوم سه پسر و یک دختر به نام تامار داشت که دختر بسیار زیبایی بود.

²⁸Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem; and he didn’t see the king’s face.

²⁸ ابشالوم دو سال در اورشلیم زندگی کرد و هیچ‌گاه پادشاه را ندید.

²⁹Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, but he would not come.

²⁹ بعد به یوآب پیام فرستاد که بیاید و او را نزد پادشاه ببرد، امّا یوآب نخواست که بیاید. بار دوم از او خواهش کرد که بیاید، باز هم قبول نکرد.

³⁰Therefore he said to his servants, “Behold, Joab’s field is near mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire.” Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.

³⁰ آنگاه ابشالوم به خدمتکاران خود گفت: «مزرعهٔ یوآب پهلوی کشتزار من است و او در آن جو کاشته است. بروید و آن را آتش بزنید.» خدمتکاران رفتند و مزرعهٔ او را آتش زدند.

³¹Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom to his house, and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?”

³¹ یوآب به خانهٔ ابشالوم رفت و از او پرسید: «چرا خدمتکاران تو مزرعهٔ مرا آتش زدند؟»

³²Absalom answered Joab, “Behold, I sent to you, saying, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still. Now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”’”

³² ابشالوم جواب داد: «من از تو خواهش کردم که اینجا بیایی تا تو را به حضور پادشاه بفرستم که از او بپرسی چرا مرا از جشور به اینجا آورد؟ برای من بهتر بود که در همان‌جا می‌ماندم. بنابراین می‌خواهم پیش پادشاه بروم تا اگر گناهکارم مرا بکشد.» یوآب رفت و پیام ابشالوم را به پادشاه رساند. پادشاه او را به حضور خود خواند. وقتی ابشالوم پیش پادشاه آمد، روی بر زمین نهاده و تعظیم کرد و پادشاه او را بوسید.

³³So Joab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.

³³ یوآب رفت و پیام ابشالوم را به پادشاه رساند. پادشاه او را به حضور خود خواند. وقتی ابشالوم پیش پادشاه آمد، روی بر زمین نهاده و تعظیم کرد و پادشاه او را بوسید.
