¹It happened after this, that David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” Yahweh said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”

¹ داوود از خداوند سؤال کرد: «آیا به یکی از شهرهای یهودا بروم؟» خداوند جواب داد: «بلی، برو.» داوود پرسید: «به کدام شهر بروم؟» خداوند فرمود: «به شهر حبرون.»

²So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

² پس داوود با دو زن خود، اخینوعم یزرعیلی و ابیجایل، بیوهٔ نابال کرملی

³David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.

³ و با جنگجویانش و خانواده‌های ایشان به شهرهای اطراف حبرون رفته در آنجا ساکن شد.

⁴The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, saying, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”

⁴ آنگاه سران طایفهٔ یهودا برای مراسم تاجگذاری آمدند و داوود را به پادشاهی طایفهٔ یهودا، مسح کردند. هنگامی‌که به داوود خبر رسید که مردم یابیش جلعاد، شائول را به خاک سپرده‌اند،

⁵David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, “Blessed are you by Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.

⁵ داوود این پیام را برای ایشان فرستاد: «خداوند به شما به‌خاطر وفاداریی که به پادشاه داشته‌اید و او را آبرومندانه دفن کردید برکت بدهد!

⁶Now may Yahweh show loving kindness and truth to you. I also will reward you for this kindness, because you have done this thing.

⁶ دعا می‌کنم که خداوند هم به نوبهٔ خود، وفا و محبّت سرشار خود را نصیب شما گرداند! من هم به‌خاطر کردار نیک شما، خوبی و احسان خود را از شما دریغ نمی‌کنم.

⁷Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

⁷ نیرومند و شجاع باشید، پادشاه شما شائول مرده است و مردم یهود مرا به پادشاهی خود مسح کرده‌اند.»

⁸Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

⁸ در این وقت اَبنیر پسر نیر، سپهسالار لشکر شائول، به محنایم رفت و ایشبوشت پسر شائول را به پادشاهی قلمرو جلعاد، آشوریان، یزرعیل، افرایم، بنیامین و تمام سرزمین اسرائیل گماشت.

⁹and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

⁹ وقتی ایشبوشت پادشاه شد، چهل ساله بود و دو سال سلطنت کرد. امّا طايفهٔ یهودا، از داوود پیروی کردند.

¹⁰Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

¹⁰ داوود مدّت هفت سال و شش ماه در حبرون، پادشاه طایفهٔ یهودا بود.

¹¹The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

¹¹ اَبنیر، پسر نیر با سربازان ایشبوشت از محنایم به جبعون رفت.

¹²Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

¹² یوآب پسر صرویه، و سربازان داوود رفته آنها را در برکه جبعون ملاقات کردند. هر دو سپاه مقابل هم در دو طرف برکه نشستند.

¹³Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

¹³ آنگاه اَبنیر به یوآب گفت: «بگذار جوانان ما زورآزمایی کنند!» یوآب موافقت کرد.

¹⁴Abner said to Joab, “Please let the young men arise and play before us!” Joab said, “Let them arise!”

¹⁴ پس دوازده نفر از هر گروه بنیامین و ایشبوشت پسر شائول و دوازده نفر از گروه داوود انتخاب شدند و به جنگ پرداختند.

¹⁵Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

¹⁵ هریک سر حریف خود را گرفته و با شمشیر به پهلوی او می‌زد، تا همهٔ آنها کشته شدند و آن مکان را «میدان شمشیر» نامیدند.

¹⁶They each caught his opponent by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: therefore that place was called Helkath Hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

¹⁶ جنگ آن روز یک جنگ خونین بود و سپاه داوود، لشکر اَبنیر را شکست داد.

¹⁷The battle was very severe that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

¹⁷ سه پسر صرویه، یعنی یوآب، ابیشای و عسائیل هم در آنجا بودند. عسائیل که مثل یک آهوی وحشی، چابک و تیز بود

¹⁸The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.

¹⁸ تک و تنها به تعقیب اَبنیر رفت. مستقیماً او را دنبال کرد و هیچ چیزی مانعش نمی‌شد.

¹⁹Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he didn’t turn to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

¹⁹ اَبنیر به پشت سر نگاه کرد و پرسید: «عسائیل، این تو هستی؟» او جواب داد: «بلی، من هستم.»

²⁰Then Abner looked behind him, and said, “Is it you, Asahel?” He answered, “It is I.”

²⁰ اَبنیر گفت: «به دو طرفت نگاه کن، یکی از جوانان را دستگیر نما، دارایی‌اش را بگیر.» امّا عسائیل قبول نکرد و به تعقیب خود ادامه داد.

²¹Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.

²¹ اَبنیر باز به او گفت: «از اینجا برو. نمی‌خواهم تو را بکشم، زیرا در آن صورت چطور می‌توانم به روی برادرت، یوآب نگاه کنم؟»

²²Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Joab your brother?”

²² او باز هم قبول نکرد. آنگاه اَبنیر با نیزه به شکم او زد و سر نیزه‌اش از پشت او بیرون آمد، به زمین افتاد و مُرد. هرکه به آن مکانی که جنازهٔ عسائیل افتاده بود رسید، ایستاد.

²³However he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place. It happened, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

²³ یوآب و ابیشای به دنبال اَبنیر رفتند. هنگام غروب آفتاب به تپّهٔ امّه که در نزدیکی جیح و در راه بیابان جبعون است، رسیدند.

²⁴But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

²⁴ سپاه اَبنیر که همه از مردم بنیامین بودند، در بالای تپّه جمع شدند.

²⁵The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.

²⁵ اَبنیر، یوآب را خطاب کرده گفت: «آیا ما باید برای همیشه بجنگیم؟ تو نمی‌توانی ببینی که در آخر چیزی جز تلخی نمی‌ماند؟ ما از اقوام تو هستیم. کی به افرادت دستور خواهی داد که از تعقیب ما دست بکشند؟»

²⁶Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”

²⁶ یوآب در جواب گفت: «به خدای زنده سوگند می‌خورم که اگر تو حرفی نمی‌زدی، ما تا فردا صبح شما را تعقیب می‌کردیم.»

²⁷Joab said, “As God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people would have gone away, and not each followed his brother.”

²⁷ آنگاه یوآب شیپور زد و همگی توقّف کردند و دست از تعقیب سپاه اسرائیل کشیدند و دیگر با آنها جنگ نکردند.

²⁸So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

²⁸ اَبنیر و مردان او تمام شب از راه دشت اردن رفته از رود اردن عبور کردند. فردای آن روز تا ظهر راه پیمودند تا به محنایم رسیدند.

²⁹Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

²⁹ یوآب پس از تعقیب اَبنیر به حبرون برگشت و تمام سپاه خود را جمع کرد. بعد از سرشماری دید که به غیراز عسائیل نوزده نفر دیگر از مردان داوود کم بودند.

³⁰Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.

³⁰ امّا سیصد و شصت نفر از افراد اَبنیر، از طایفهٔ بنیامین، به دست مردان داوود کشته شده بودند. بعد جنازهٔ عسائیل را بُردند و در آرامگاه پدرش در بیت‌لحم به خاک سپردند. یوآب و افرادش تمام شب راه رفتند و سپیده‌دم به حبرون رسیدند.

³¹But the servants of David had struck of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred sixty men died.

³¹ بعد جنازهٔ عسائیل را بُردند و در آرامگاه پدرش در بیت‌لحم به خاک سپردند. یوآب و افرادش تمام شب راه رفتند و سپیده‌دم به حبرون رسیدند.

³²They took up Asahel, and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.
