¹Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: and David grew stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

¹ جنگ بین خانوادهٔ شائول و خاندان داوود، زمان درازی ادامه داشت. نیروهای شائول روز به روز ضعیفتر می‌شدند و قدرت داوود رو به افزایش بود.

²To David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

² شش پسر داوود در حبرون به دنیا آمدند، اولین آنها اَمنون که مادرش اخینوعم یزرعیلی بود.

³and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

³ پسر دوم او کیلاب بود که ابیجایل، بیوهٔ نابال کرملی به دنیا آورد. سومی ابشالوم پسر معکه، دختر تلمای پادشاه جشور،

⁴and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

⁴ چهارمی ادونیا پسر حجیت، پنجمی شفطیا پسر ابیطال

⁵and the sixth, Ithream, of Eglah, David’s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

⁵ و ششمی یترعام پسر عجله بود.

⁶It happened, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong in the house of Saul.

⁶ در مدّتی که جنگ بین نیروهای داوود و نیروهای سلطنتی شائول ادامه داشت، اَبنیر یکی از قدرتمندترین پیروان خانوادهٔ شائول گردید.

⁷Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

⁷ شائول همسر صیغه‌ای به نام رصفه داشت که دختر ایه بود. ایشبوشت، اَبنیر را متّهم ساخته گفت: «چرا با صیغهٔ پدرم همبستر شدی؟»

⁸Then was Abner very angry for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show kindness to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and yet you charge me this day with a fault concerning this woman!

⁸ اَبنیر از این حرف او بسیار خشمگین شد و گفت: «مگر من سگ هستم که با من چنین رفتار می‌کنی؟ با وجود تمام خوبی‌هایی که من در حق پدرت و برادران و دوستان او کردم و نگذاشتم که دست داوود به تو برسد، تو امروز برعکس، مرا به‌خاطر این زن، گناهکار می‌سازی.

⁹God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as Yahweh has sworn to David, I don’t do even so to him;

⁹ پس حالا با تمام قدرت خود می‌کوشم که سلطنت را از تو بگیرم و طبق وعدهٔ خداوند، سرزمین را از دان تا بئرشبع به داوود تسلیم کنم.»

¹⁰to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.”

¹⁰ ایشبوشت از ترس خاموش ماند و نتوانست جوابی به اَبنیر بدهد.

¹¹He could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.

¹¹ آنگاه اَبنیر پیامی به این شرح به داوود فرستاده گفت: «آیا می‌دانی که این سرزمین مال کیست؟ اگر با من پیمان ببندی، من به تو کمک می‌کنم و اختیار تمام سرزمین اسرائیل را به دست تو می‌سپارم.»

¹²Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “Whose is the land?” and saying, “Make your alliance with me, and behold, my hand shall be with you, to bring all Israel around to you.”

¹² داوود پاسخ داد: «بسیار خوب، من به شرطی با تو پیمان می‌بندم که همسرم میکال، دختر شائول را با خود نزد من بیاوری.»

¹³He said, “Good; I will make a treaty with you; but one thing I require of you. That is, you shall not see my face, unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”

¹³ بعد داوود به ایشبوشت پیام فرستاده گفت: «زن من میکال را که به قیمت صد قلفهٔ فلسطینی خریده‌ام برایم بفرست.»

¹⁴David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I pledged to be married to me for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

¹⁴ پس ایشبوشت او را از شوهرش، فلطیئیل پسر لایش پس گرفت.

¹⁵Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Paltiel the son of Laish.

¹⁵ شوهرش گریه‌کنان تا به بحوریم به دنبال او رفت. بعد اَبنیر به فلطیئیل گفت: «برگرد و به خانه‌ات برو.» او ناچار به خانهٔ خود برگشت.

¹⁶Her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go! Return!” and he returned.

¹⁶ اَبنیر به رهبران اسرائیل پیشنهاد کرد و به آنها خاطرنشان نمود که از مدّتها قبل می‌خواستند داوود بر آنها سلطنت کند،

¹⁷Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, “In times past, you sought for David to be king over you.

¹⁷ حالا وقت آن است که خواستهٔ خود را عملی کنند، زیرا خداوند فرمود: «به وسیلهٔ بنده‌ام داوود، قوم اسرائیل را از دست فلسطینیان و همهٔ دشمنان ایشان نجات می‌دهم.»

¹⁸Now then do it; for Yahweh has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’”

¹⁸ سپس اَبنیر بعد از مذاکره با رهبران طایفهٔ بنیامین، به حبرون پیش داوود رفت تا از نتیجهٔ مذاکرات خود با قوم اسرائیل و طایفهٔ بنیامین، به او گزارش بدهد.

¹⁹Abner also spoke in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and to the whole house of Benjamin.

¹⁹ اَبنیر با بیست نفر از جنگجویان خود به حبرون رسید و داوود برای آنها مهمانی داد.

²⁰So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.

²⁰ اَبنیر به داوود گفت: «من می‌خواهم بروم و تمام قوم اسرائیل را جمع کنم و به حضور سرورم، پادشاه بیاورم تا پیمانی با شما ببندند و شما به آرزوی دیرینهٔ خود برسید و بر آنها حکومت کنید.» پس داوود به او اجازه داد و او را به سلامت روانه کرد.

²¹Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

²¹ بعد از آنکه اَبنیر رفت، یوآب و بعضی از افراد داوود از یک حمله برگشتند و غنیمت فراوانی را که گرفته بودند با خود آوردند.

²²Behold, the servants of David and Joab came from a foray, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

²² چون یوآب شنید که اَبنیر به ملاقات پادشاه آمده بود و پادشاه به او اجازه داد که بی‌خطر برود،

²³When Joab and all the army who was with him had come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

²³ با عجله پیش داوود رفت و گفت: «چرا این کار را کردی؟ اَبنیر پیش تو آمد و تو هم به او اجازه دادی که برود.

²⁴Then Joab came to the king, and said, “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is quite gone?

²⁴ تو خوب می‌دانستی که او برای جاسوسی آمده بود تا از همهٔ حرکات و کارهایت باخبر شود.»

²⁵You know Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”

²⁵ وقتی یوآب از پیش داوود رفت، فوراً چند نفر را به دنبال اَبنیر فرستاد و او را از کنار چشمهٔ سیره بازآوردند ولی داوود از این کار آگاه نبود.

²⁶When Joab had come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David didn’t know it.

²⁶ به مجرّدی که اَبنیر به حبرون رسید، یوآب او را از دروازهٔ شهر به بهانهٔ مذاکرهٔ خصوصی به گوشه‌ای برد و در آنجا به انتقام خون برادر خود عسائیل، شکم او را درید و او را به قتل رساند.

²⁷When Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

²⁷ هنگامی‌که داوود از ماجرا باخبر شد گفت: «من و سلطنت من در ریختن خون اَبنیر در حضور خداوند گناهی نداریم. یوآب و خاندان او مقصّرند.

²⁸Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before Yahweh forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

²⁸ از خدا می‌خواهم که همه‌شان به عفونت و جذام مبتلا شوند، از پا بیفتند و با دَم شمشیر یا از قحطی بمیرند.»

²⁹Let it fall on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house. Let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has an issue, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”

²⁹ به این ترتیب یوآب و برادرش ابیشای، اَبنیر را کشتند، زیرا برادر ایشان، عسائیل را در جنگ جبعون به قتل رسانده بود.

³⁰So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

³⁰ داوود به یوآب و تمام کسانی‌که با او بودند گفت: «لباس خود را پاره کنید و پلاس بپوشید و برای اَبنیر سوگواری کنید.» داوود پادشاه در پی جنازهٔ او رفت.

³¹David said to Joab, and to all the people who were with him, Tear your clothes, and clothe yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. King David followed the bier.

³¹ بعد اَبنیر را در حبرون به خاک سپردند و پادشاه با آواز بلند بر سر قبر او گریه کرد و همهٔ مردم نیز گریستند.

³²They buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

³² آنگاه پادشاه این سوگنامه را برای اَبنیر خواند: «آیا لازم بود که اَبنیر مانند نادانان بمیرد؟

³³The king lamented for Abner, and said, “Should Abner die as a fool dies?

³³ دستهای تو بسته و پاهایت در زنجیر نبودند. تو به دست فرومایگان کشته شدی.» و مردم دوباره برای اَبنیر گریه کردند.

³⁴Your hands were not bound, nor your feet put into fetters. As a man falls before the children of iniquity, so you fell.” All the people wept again over him.

³⁴ چون داوود در روز دفن اَبنیر چیزی نخورده بود، مردم از او خواهش کردند که غذا بخورد، امّا داوود سوگند یاد کرد که تا غروب آفتاب به چیزی لب نزند.

³⁵All the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or anything else, until the sun goes down.”

³⁵ مردم احساسات نیک او را مانند دیگر کارهای خوب او تقدیر کردند.

³⁶All the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; as whatever the king did pleased all the people.

³⁶ آنگاه دانستند که پادشاه در کشتن اَبنیر دخالتی نداشته است.

³⁷So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to kill Abner the son of Ner.

³⁷ پادشاه به مأموران خود گفت: «می‌دانید که امروز یک رهبر و یک شخصیّت بزرگ اسرائیل کشته شد. با اینکه من، پادشاه برگزیدهٔ خداوندم ولی ضعیف هستم و این مردان یعنی پسران صرویه از من تواناترند. خداوند مردم شریر را به جزای کارهایشان برساند.»

³⁸The king said to his servants, “Don’t you know that there a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?

³⁸ با اینکه من، پادشاه برگزیدهٔ خداوندم ولی ضعیف هستم و این مردان یعنی پسران صرویه از من تواناترند. خداوند مردم شریر را به جزای کارهایشان برساند.»

³⁹I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May Yahweh reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
