¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.

¹ پس آنها از آمفیپولیس و آپولونیا گذشتند و به تسالونیكی كه كنیسهٔ یهود در آن واقع بود رسیدند.

²Paul, as was his custom, went in to them, and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

² پولس به پیروی از شیوهٔ همیشگی خود وارد كنیسه شد و در سه روز سبت به طور متوالی با استفاده از کتاب‌مقدّس با آنان مباحثه می‌کرد

³explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”

³ و توضیح می‌داد و دلیل می‌آورد كه لازم بود مسیح رنج ببیند و پس از مرگ زنده گردد. او می‌گفت: «عیسایی كه من به شما اعلام می‌کنم همان مسیح است.»

⁴Some of them were persuaded, and joined Paul and Silas, of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women.

⁴ عدّه‌ای از آنان و همچنین گروه زیادی از یونانیان خداپرست و زنهای سرشناس متقاعد شدند و به پولس و سیلاس گرویدند.

⁵But the unpersuaded Jews took along TR reads “And the Jews who were unpersuaded, becoming envious and taking along” instead of “But the unpersuaded Jews took along” some wicked men from the marketplace, and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.

⁵ امّا یهودیان در آتش حسد می‌سوختند. آنان عدّهٔ زیادی از اراذل و اوباش بازاری را گرد آورده دسته‌ای به راه انداختند و هیاهویی در شهر برپا كرده به خانهٔ یاسون هجوم بردند تا پولس و سیلاس را به میان جمعیّت بیاورند.

⁶When they didn’t find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers The word for “brothers” here and where the context allows may be also correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” before the rulers of the city, crying, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here also,

⁶ وقتی آنان را نیافتند یاسون و عدّه‌ای از ایماندارن را پیش انجمن شهر كشیدند و فریاد می‌کردند: «این کسانی‌که دنیا را به هم ریخته‌اند حالا به اینجا آمده‌اند

⁷whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!”

⁷ و یاسون آنان را به خانهٔ خود برده است. اینها همه برخلاف احكام قیصر عمل می‌کنند و ادّعا دارند پادشاه دیگری به نام عیسی وجود دارد.»

⁸The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things.

⁸ با شنیدن این جمله جمعیّت و انجمن شهر بشدّت به هیجان آمدند.

⁹When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

⁹ ولی به هر حال یاسون و دیگران را با ضمانت آزاد كردند.

¹⁰The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

¹⁰ به محض اینكه هوا تاریک شد، ایمانداران، پولس و سیلاس را به بیریه روانه كردند و وقتی به آنجا رسیدند به كنیسهٔ یهود رفتند.

¹¹Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

¹¹ یهودیان مقیم آنجا از یهودیان تسالونیكی روشنفكرتر بودند. آنها با اشتیاق كامل به پیام پولس و سیلاس گوش می‌دادند و هر روز کتاب‌مقدّس را مطالعه می‌کردند تا ببینند آیا آن سخنان با كتب سازگار است یا خیر.

¹²Many of them therefore believed; also of the prominent Greek women, and not a few men.

¹² بنابراین بسیاری از آنان و عدّهٔ زیادی از زنهای متنفذ یونانی و مردان یونانی نیز ایمان آوردند.

¹³But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there likewise, agitating the multitudes.

¹³ ولی وقتی یهودیان در تسالونیكی اطّلاع یافتند، كه پولس در بیریه نیز كلام خدا را منتشر ساخته است به آنجا آمدند تا مردم را بشورانند.

¹⁴Then the brothers immediately sent out Paul to go as far as to the sea, and Silas and Timothy still stayed there.

¹⁴ به این جهت ایماندران فوراً پولس را به ساحل دریا فرستادند و سیلاس و تیموتاؤس هر دو در همان‌جا ماندند.

¹⁵But those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens. Receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him very quickly, they departed.

¹⁵ همراهان پولس او را تا شهر آتن همراهی كردند. سپس پولس به آنان دستور داد كه به بیریه بازگردند و هرچه زودتر سیلاس و تیموتاؤس را پیش او بفرستند.

¹⁶Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols.

¹⁶ پولس وقتی در آتن در انتظار سیلاس و تیموتاؤس بود، از اینكه شهر را آن‌طور پر از بت می‌دید عمیقاً متأثر شد.

¹⁷So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him.

¹⁷ و به این دلیل در كنیسه با یهودیان و خداپرستان و هر روز در میدان شهر با رهگذران به گفت‌وگو می‌پرداخت.

¹⁸Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also TR omits “also” were conversing with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

¹⁸ عدّه‌ای از فلسفه‌دانان اپیكوری و رواقی به او برخورد كردند و با عقایدش به مخالفت پرداختند. بعضی از آنها می‌گفتند: «این یاوه‌گو چه می‌خواهد بگوید؟» دیگران می‌گفتند: «گویا مبلّغ خدایان بیگانه است.» (زیرا به عیسی و رستاخیز بشارت می‌داد)

¹⁹They took hold of him, and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by you?

¹⁹ پس او را گرفته به شورای كوه مریخ بردند و گفتند: «ممكن است ما بدانیم این تعالیم تازه‌ای كه تو پیشنهاد می‌كنی چیست؟

²⁰For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean.”

²⁰ سخنان تو به گوش ما عجیب می‌آید. ما می‌خواهیم معنی آن را بفهمیم.»

²¹Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

²¹ (آتنی‌ها و خارجی‌های ساكن آنجا همه وقت خود را صرف گفت و شنود در خصوص عقاید تازه می‌كردند.)

²²Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus, and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things.

²² پس پولس در میان «شورای كوه مریخ» برخاست و فرمود: «ای مردم شهر آتن، من می‌دانم كه شما در كلّیهٔ امور دینی بسیار دقیق و باریک بین هستید

²³For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I announce to you.

²³ زیرا وقتی در شهر شما می‌گشتم و آنچه را مورد پرستش شماست مشاهده می‌كردم، به قربانگاهی رسیدم كه بر آن نوشته شده بود 'تقدیم به خدای ناشناخته.' من همان كسی را كه شما می‌پرستید امّا نمی‌شناسید به شما اعلام می‌كنم.

²⁴The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands,

²⁴ آن خدایی كه دنیا و آنچه در آن است آفرید و صاحب آسمان و زمین است در معابد ساخته شده به دست انسان ساکن نیست

²⁵neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.

²⁵ و به چیزی كه آدمیان با دستهای خود برای او فراهم نمایند نیازی ندارد، زیرا خداست كه نفس و حیات و همه‌چیز را به جمیع آدمیان می‌بخشد.

²⁶He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings,

²⁶ او جمیع ملل را از نسل یک انسان آفرید تا در تمام سطح زمین ساكن شوند و برای آنان زمانی را مقرّر فرمود و برای مرز و بومشان حدودی معیّن كرد،

²⁷that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

²⁷ تا خدا را بجویند و كوركورانه پی او بگردند تا شاید او را بیابند و حال آنكه او از هیچ‌یک از ما دور نیست،

²⁸‘For in him we live, and move, and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’

²⁸ 'زیرا در او زندگی می‌کنیم و در او حركت و هستی داریم.' چنانکه بعضی از شاعران خودتان گفته‌اند: 'ما نیز فرزندان او هستیم.'

²⁹Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man.

²⁹ پس چون همهٔ ما فرزندان خدا هستیم نباید گمان كنیم كه ذات الهی مانند پیکره‌ای از طلا و نقره و سنگ است كه با هنر و مهارت آدمی تراشیده می‌شود.

³⁰The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent,

³⁰ خدا دوران جهالت را نادیده گرفت، امّا اكنون در همه‌جا بشر را امر به توبه می‌فرماید،

³¹because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.”

³¹ زیرا روزی را معیّن فرمود كه جهان را با راستی و درستی به وسیلهٔ شخصی كه برگزیدهٔ خود اوست داوری فرماید و برای اثبات این حقیقت او را پس از مرگ زنده كرد.»

³²Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We want to hear you again concerning this.”

³² وقتی این مطلب را در خصوص رستاخیز مردگان شنیدند عدّه‌ای او را مسخره كردند ولی عدّه‌ای گفتند: «خوب، دربارهٔ این چیزها در فرصت دیگر به سخن تو گوش خواهیم داد.»

³³Thus Paul went out from among them.

³³ به این ترتیب پولس شورا را ترک كرد. چند نفر از جمله دیونیسوس كه عضو آن شورا بود و زنی به نام دامرس و چند تن دیگر به او گرویدند و ایمان آوردند.

³⁴But certain men joined with him, and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

³⁴ چند نفر از جمله دیونیسوس كه عضو آن شورا بود و زنی به نام دامرس و چند تن دیگر به او گرویدند و ایمان آوردند.
