¹Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day.”

¹ پولس با دقّت به اعضای شورا نگاه كرد و گفت: «برادران، من تا به امروز در حضور خدا با وجدانی پاک زندگی کرده‌ام.»

²The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.

² در این هنگام حنانیا كاهن اعظم به کسانی‌که در كنار پولس ایستاده بودند، دستور داد كه به دهانش مشت بزنند.

³Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”

³ پولس به او گفت: «ای دیوار سفید شده، خدا تو را خواهد زد. تو آنجا نشسته‌ای كه مطابق قانون در مورد من قضاوت نمایی و حالا برخلاف آن دستور می‌دهی كه مرا بزنند.»

⁴Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”

⁴ حاضران گفتند: «به كاهن اعظم خدا اهانت می‌کنی؟»

⁵Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’” Exodus 22:28

⁵ پولس گفت: «ای برادران، من نمی‌‌‌دانستم كه او كاهن اعظم است. می‌دانم كه تورات می‌فرماید: 'به پیشوای قوم خود ناسزا نگو.'»

⁶But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”

⁶ وقتی پولس فهمید كه بعضی از آنان صدوقی و بعضی فریسی هستند، با صدای بلند گفت: «ای برادران، من فریسی و فریسی‌‌زاده‌ام و مرا به‌خاطر ایمان و امید به رستاخیز مردگان در اینجا محاكمه می‌کنند.»

⁷When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

⁷ با این سخن میان فریسیان و صدوقیان اختلاف افتاد و مردم به دو دسته تقسیم شدند.

⁸For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.

⁸ (صدوقیان منكر روز قیامت و وجود فرشته یا روح هستند ولی، فریسیان به وجود اینها اعتقاد دارند.)

⁹A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”

⁹ سر و صدای زیادی در مجلس بلند شد و چند نفر از علمای فرقهٔ فریسی برخاسته گفتند: «ما در این مرد هیچ تقصیری نمی‌بینم. از كجا معلوم است كه روح یا فرشته‌ای با او سخن نگفته باشد»

¹⁰When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the barracks.

¹⁰ اختلاف زیادتر شد و سرهنگ از ترس اینكه مبادا پولس را تكه‌تکه كنند، فرمان داد سربازان به مجلس وارد شوند و پولس را از میان جمعیّت خارج ساخته و به سربازخانه ببرند.

¹¹The following night, the Lord stood by him, and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”

¹¹ در شب همان روز خداوند به پولس ظاهر شد و فرمود: «دل قوی‌دار، چون همان‌طور كه در اورشلیم دربارهٔ من شهادت دادی در روم نیز باید چنان كنی»

¹²When it was day, some of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

¹² وقتی روز شد، بعضی از یهودیان دور هم جمع شدند و سوگند یاد كردند كه تا پولس را نكشند به هیچ خوردنی و یا نوشیدنی لب نزنند.

¹³There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.

¹³ در این توطئه بیش از چهل نفر شركت داشتند.

¹⁴They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.

¹⁴ آنان پیش سران كاهنان و مشایخ رفتند و گفتند: «ما سوگند خورده‌ایم تا پولس را نكشیم لب به غذا نزنیم.

¹⁵Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”

¹⁵ بنابراین شما و اعضای شورا به بهانهٔ اینكه می‌خواهید در سوابق پولس تحقیقات بیشتری نمایید، از سرهنگ تقاضا كنید او را فردا پیش شما بیاورد. ما ترتیبی داده‌ایم كه او را قبل از اینكه به اینجا برسد، بكشیم.»

¹⁶But Paul’s sister’s son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.

¹⁶ امّا خواهرزادهٔ پولس از این توطئه باخبر شد و به سربازخانه رفت و پولس را مطّلع ساخت.

¹⁷Paul summoned one of the centurions, and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”

¹⁷ پولس یكی از افسران را صدا زده گفت: «این جوان را پیش سرهنگ ببر، می‌خواهد موضوعی را به عرض او برساند.»

¹⁸So he took him, and brought him to the commanding officer, and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you, who has something to tell you.”

¹⁸ سروان او را پیش سرهنگ برد و به او گفت: «پولس زندانی به دنبال من فرستاد و تقاضا كرد كه این جوان را پیش شما بیاورم. او می‌خواهد موضوعی را به عرض برساند.»

¹⁹The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”

¹⁹ سرهنگ دست او را گرفته به كناری كشید و محرمانه از او پرسید: «چه می‌خواهی بگویی؟»

²⁰He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.

²⁰ او گفت: «یهودیان نقشه کشیده‌اند كه از شما تقاضا نمایند پولس را فردا به شورا ببرید. بهانهٔ آنان این است، كه می‌خواهند در مورد او اطّلاعات دقیقتری به دست آورند.

²¹Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse neither to eat nor to drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”

²¹ به حرفهای آنان توجّه نكنید، زیرا بیش از چهل نفر از ایشان در كمین او نشسته‌اند و قسم خورده‌اند كه تا او را نكشند چیزی نخورند و نیاشامند. آنان اكنون حاضر و آماده هستند و فقط در انتظار موافقت شما می‌باشند.»

²²So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”

²² به این ترتیب سرهنگ آن جوان را مرخّص كرد و به او اخطار نمود كه نباید از اطّلاعاتی كه در اختیار او گذاشته است کسی باخبر شود.

²³He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen, and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night about 9:00 PM .”

²³ سپس سرهنگ دو نفر سروان را صدا زد و به آنها گفت: «دویست سرباز پیاده و هفتاد سواره نظام و دویست نیزه دار آماده كنید تا امشب ساعت نُه به قیصریه بروند

²⁴He asked them to provide animals, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.

²⁴ و چند اسب برای پولس حاضر كنید تا به این وسیله او را سالم به فیلیكِس فرماندار تحویل دهید.»

²⁵He wrote a letter like this:

²⁵ او نامه‌ای هم به این شرح نوشت:

²⁶“Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.

²⁶ «كلودیوس لیسیاس به حضرت فرماندار فیلیكس سلام می‌رساند.

²⁷“This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them, when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.

²⁷ این مرد را یهودیان گرفته‌اند و قصد داشتند او را بكشند امّا وقتی فهمیدم كه او یک نفر رومی است، من با سربازان خود به آنجا رفته، او را از چنگ ایشان بیرون آوردم

²⁸Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.

²⁸ و از آنجا كه مایل بودم علّت اتّهام او را بفهمم او را به شورای ایشان بردم.

²⁹I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.

²⁹ امّا متوجّه شدم كه موضوع مربوط به اختلاف عقیدهٔ آنها در خصوص شریعت خودشان است و او كاری كه مستوجب اعدام یا زندان باشد نكرده است.

³⁰When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”

³⁰ پس وقتی فهمیدم كه آنها در صدد سوء قصد نسبت به جان او هستند، بی‌درنگ او را پیش شما فرستادم و به مدّعیان او نیز دستور داده‌ام كه دعوی خود را در پیشگاه شما به عرض برسانند.»

³¹So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.

³¹ سربازان طبق دستوراتی كه گرفته بودند، پولس را تحویل گرفته و او را شبانه به انتیپاترس رسانیدند.

³²But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.

³² فردای آن روز همه به جز سوارانی كه پولس را تا به مقصد همراهی می‌کردند به سربازخانه برگشتند.

³³When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.

³³ سواران به محض رسیدن به قیصریه نامهٔ مذكور را به فرماندار تقدیم نموده و پولس را به او تحویل دادند.

³⁴When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,

³⁴ فرماندار وقتی نامه را خواند از پولس پرسید كه اهل كدام استان است و چون فهمید كه اهل قیلیقیه است به او گفت: «وقتی مدّعیان تو برسند به دفاع تو گوش خواهم داد.» و فرمان داد او را در كاخ هیرودیس تحت نظر نگاه دارند.

³⁵“I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.

³⁵ به او گفت: «وقتی مدّعیان تو برسند به دفاع تو گوش خواهم داد.» و فرمان داد او را در كاخ هیرودیس تحت نظر نگاه دارند.
