¹“Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you.”

¹ «ای برادران و پدران، به دفاعی كه هم اكنون به عرض شما می‌رسانم توجّه فرمایید.»

²When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,

² وقتی آنها دیدند پولس به زبان عبری با ایشان صحبت می‌کند ساكت‌تر شدند و گوش دادند. پولس ادامه داد و گفت:

³“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are this day.

³ «من یک نفر یهودی از اهالی طرسوس قیلیقیه هستم. ولی در این شهر در خدمت غمالائیل پرورش یافتم و شریعت آبا و اجدادی خود را به دقّت آموختم و همین‌طور كه شما امروز نسبت به خدا غیور و متعصّب هستید، من هم بودم.

⁴I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁴ و تا سرحد مرگ پیروان این طریقه را آزار می‌رسانیدم و آنان را، چه مرد و چه زن به زندان می‌انداختم.

⁵As also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

⁵ كاهن اعظم و تمام اعضای شورای یهود شاهد هستند، زیرا ایشان نامه‌هایی به برادران یهودی در دمشق نوشتند و مرا به آنها معرّفی كردند. پس من به طرف دمشق رفتم تا مسیحیان را دست بسته، برای تنبیه به اورشلیم بیاورم.

⁶It happened that, as I made my journey, and came close to Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from the sky a great light around me.

⁶ «امّا وقتی در راه بودم، در حوالی دمشق نزدیک ظهر ناگهان نور عظیمی از آسمان به اطراف من درخشید.

⁷I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

⁷ من به زمین افتادم و صدایی شنیدم كه می‌گفت: 'ای شائول، شائول، چرا بر من جفا می‌کنی؟'

⁸I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

⁸ پرسیدم: 'ای خداوند، تو كیستی؟' پاسخ داد: 'من عیسای ناصری هستم كه از تو جفا می‌بینم.'

⁹“Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

⁹ همراهان من نور را می‌دیدند امّا صدای كسی را كه با من صحبت می‌کرد، نمی‌شنیدند.

¹⁰I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’

¹⁰ من عرض كردم: 'خداوندا چه كنم؟' خداوند به من گفت: 'برخیز و به سوی دمشق برو و در آنجا كارهایی كه به تو واگذار می‌شود به تو گفته خواهد شد.'

¹¹When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹¹ چون به علّت درخشندگی آن نور من نابینا شده بودم، همراهانم دست مرا گرفتند و مرا با خود به دمشق بردند.

¹²One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

¹² در دمشق شخصی به نام حنانیا زندگی می‌کرد كه مردی خدا ترس، مطیع شریعت، و در بین یهودیان نیک نام بود.

¹³came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.

¹³ او پیش من آمد و در كنار من ایستاد و گفت: 'ای برادر شائول، بینا شو.' كه فوراً بینا شدم و به او نگاه كردم.

¹⁴He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

¹⁴ او ادامه داده گفت: 'خدای نیاکان ما تو را برگزیده است تا ارادهٔ او را درک نمایی و بندهٔ عادل او را ببینی و صدای او را از دهان خودش بشنوی،

¹⁵For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.

¹⁵ زیرا تو در برابر همهٔ جهانیان شاهد او می‌شوی و به آنچه دیده و شنیده‌ای شهادت خواهی داد.

¹⁶Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

¹⁶ حالا چرا معطل هستی؟ برخیز، تعمید بگیر و به خدا روی آور و از گناهان خود پاک شو.'

¹⁷“It happened that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,

¹⁷ «وقتی دوباره به اورشلیم آمدم، یک روز در معبد بزرگ دعا می‌کردم كه به حالت خلسه فرو رفتم

¹⁸and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’

¹⁸ و در رؤیا عیسی را دیدم كه می‌گفت: 'زود برخیز و اورشلیم را ترک كن. زیرا اهالی این شهر شهادت تو را دربارهٔ من قبول نخواهند كرد.'

¹⁹I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.

¹⁹ گفتم: 'خداوندا اینان می‌دانند كه من همان شخصی هستم كه مؤمنان تو را به زندان می‌انداختم و در کنیسه‌ها آنان را می‌زدم

²⁰When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’

²⁰ و وقتی خون آن شاهد تو استیفان ریخته شد، من در آنجا ایستاده بودم و با آن كار موافقت كردم و مواظب لباسهای قاتلان او بودم.'

²¹“He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’ ”

²¹ امّا او به من فرمود: 'برو، من تو را به جاهای دور و پیش ملل غیر یهود خواهم فرستاد.'»

²²They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice, and said, “Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!”

²² جمعیّت تا اینجا به او گوش می‌دادند، امّا وقتی این جمله را به زبان آورد، بار دیگر فریاد كردند: «او را بكشید، چنین كسی نباید زنده بماند.»

²³As they cried out, and threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,

²³ در همان وقت كه مردم با هیاهو لباسهای خود را در هوا تكان می‌دادند و گرد و خاک بلند می‌کردند،

²⁴the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.

²⁴ سرهنگ دستور داد، پولس را وارد سربازخانه نمایند و با تازیانه از او بازجویی كنند تا معلوم شود به چه علّت این هیاهو علیه او برپا شده است.

²⁵When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”

²⁵ وقتی او را برای شلاق زدن بستند، پولس از سروانی كه آنجا ایستاده بود پرسید: «آیا شما اجازه دارید یک نفر رومی را بدون آنكه محكوم شده باشد، بزنید؟»

²⁶When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, “Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!”

²⁶ وقتی سروان این را شنید، پیش سرهنگ رفت و گفت: «هیچ می‌دانی چه می‌کنی؟ این مرد یكی از اتباع روم است.»

²⁷The commanding officer came and asked him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” He said, “Yes.”

²⁷ سرهنگ پیش پولس رفت و از او پرسید: «بگو ببینم، آیا تو رومی هستی؟» پولس گفت: «آری.»

²⁸The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”

²⁸ سرهنگ گفت: «برای به دست آوردن این تابعیت من قیمت گزافی پرداخته‌ام.» پولس گفت: «امّا من با آن به دنیا آمدم.»

²⁹Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.

²⁹ پس آنها که می‌خواستند از پولس بازجویی كنند، با عجله از آنجا دور شدند و سرهنگ هم، كه به دستور او پولس را بسته بودند، وقتی فهمید او تبعه روم است، بسیار ترسید. در روز بعد چون سرهنگ می‌‌خواست، علّت موضوع و حقیقت امر را بداند، بندهای پولس را باز كرد و دستور داد سران كاهنان و شورای یهود تشكیل جلسه دهند و سپس پولس را به آنجا آورد و از او خواست در برابر آنان بایستد.

³⁰But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

³⁰ در روز بعد چون سرهنگ می‌‌خواست، علّت موضوع و حقیقت امر را بداند، بندهای پولس را باز كرد و دستور داد سران كاهنان و شورای یهود تشكیل جلسه دهند و سپس پولس را به آنجا آورد و از او خواست در برابر آنان بایستد.
