¹When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

¹ «زمانی که به جنگ می‌روید و لشکر دشمن را با اسبها و ارّابه‌های جنگی آنها بزرگتر و نیرومندتر از خود می‌بینید، نترسید؛ زیرا خداوند خدایتان که شما را از سرزمین مصر بیرون آورد، همراه شما می‌باشد.

²It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

² پیش از آن که به جنگ بروید، کاهنی بیاید و به ارتش بگوید،

³and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don’t let your heart faint; don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;

³ 'ای مردان اسرائیلی، بشنوید! امروز شما برای جنگ به مقابل دشمن می‌روید. سست دل نشوید، نترسید، وحشت نکنید و شجاع باشید،

⁴for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”

⁴ زیرا خداوند خدایتان با شما می‌رود، با دشمن می‌جنگد و شما را پیروز می‌سازد.'

⁵The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

⁵ «آنگاه افسران به سربازان چنین بگویند: 'آیا کسی هست که خانه‌ای نو ساخته و آن را وقف نکرده باشد؟ وی به خانهٔ خود بازگردد، در غیر این صورت اگر در جنگ کشته شود، شخص دیگری آن خانه را وقف خواهد کرد.

⁶What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit.

⁶ آیا کسی هست که تاکستانی کاشته و هنوز از انگور آن برداشت نکرده باشد؟ اگر هست به خانهٔ خود بازگردد، مبادا در جنگ بمیرد و کس دیگری میوهٔ آن را بخورد.

⁷What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.”

⁷ آیا کسی هست که نامزد کرده امّا هنوز ازدواج نکرده باشد؟ اگر هست، باید به خانهٔ خود بازگردد، در غیر این صورت اگر در جنگ کشته شود، شخص دیگری با نامزد او ازدواج خواهد کرد.'

⁸The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.”

⁸ «همچنین افسران به سربازان بگویند: 'آیا کسی هست که شجاعتش را از دست داده باشد و بترسد؟ اگر چنین است، او باید به خانهٔ خود بازگردد. در غیر این صورت روحیه دیگران را از بین خواهد برد.'

⁹It shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people.

⁹ هنگامی‌که سخنان افسران با ارتش تمام شد، برای هر گروه، رهبری انتخاب شود.

¹⁰When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

¹⁰ «هنگامی‌که می‌خواهید به شهری حمله کنید، ابتدا به مردم فرصت بدهید که تسلیم شوند.

¹¹It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you.

¹¹ اگر دروازه‌ها را باز کردند و تسلیم شدند، آنها باید بردگان شما شوند و از آنها بیگاری بکشید.

¹²If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it:

¹² امّا اگر تسلیم نشدند و خواستند که بجنگند، پس شما آن شهر را محاصره کنید.

¹³and when Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword:

¹³ هنگامی‌که خداوند خدایتان آن شهر را به شما داد، همهٔ مردان آنجا را به قتل برسانید.

¹⁴but the women, and the little ones, and the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its spoil, you shall take for a prey to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you.

¹⁴ امّا شما می‌توانید زنان و کودکان و گاو و گوسفند و هرچه را در شهر هست، برای خود نگه دارید. شما می‌توانید از هر چیز که به دشمن شما تعلّق دارد، استفاده کنید؛ زیرا خداوند آنها را به شما داده است.

¹⁵Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

¹⁵ به همین ترتیب با تمام شهرهایی که از سرزمینی که در آن ساکن می‌شوید دور هستند، رفتار کنید.

¹⁶But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;

¹⁶ «امّا در شهرهای آن سرزمینی که خداوند خدایتان به شما می‌دهد، همه را بکشید.

¹⁷but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you;

¹⁷ همه را از بین ببرید، حِتّیان، اموریان، کنعانیان، فرزیان، حویان و یبوسیان را همان‌طور که خداوند خدایتان امر فرموده است.

¹⁸that they not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God.

¹⁸ در غیر این صورت ایشان کارهای زشتی را که برای پرستش خدایانشان انجام می‌دهند، به شما می‌آموزند و شما علیه خداوند خدایتان مرتکب گناه خواهید شد.

¹⁹When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of you?

¹⁹ «هنگامی‌که سعی می‌کنید شهری را تصرّف کنید، درختان میوهٔ آن را قطع نکنید، حتّی اگر محاصره طولانی شود، میوهٔ آنها را بخورید امّا درختان را نابود نکنید، زیرا آنها دشمنان شما نیستند. درختانی را که می‌دانید میوه بار نمی‌آورند، قطع کنید و از چوب آنها برای ساختن سنگر استفاده کنید.

²⁰Only the trees of which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it fall.

²⁰ درختانی را که می‌دانید میوه بار نمی‌آورند، قطع کنید و از چوب آنها برای ساختن سنگر استفاده کنید.
