¹When Yahweh your God shall cut off the nations, whose land Yahweh your God gives you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses;

¹ «بعد از آن که خداوند خدایتان مردمی را که سرزمین ایشان را به شما خواهد داد، نابود کرد و بعد از اینکه شما شهرها و خانه‌های ایشان را تصرّف کردید و در آنجا ساکن شدید،

²you shall set apart three cities for you in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.

² آن سرزمین را به سه منطقه تقسیم کنید و در هر کدام شهری را که رسیدن به آن آسان باشد مشخص کنید. آنگاه مردی که مرتکب قتل شده است، می‌تواند به آنها برای حفاظت فرار کند.

³You shall prepare you the way, and divide the borders of your land, which Yahweh your God causes you to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee there.

³ هرگاه مردی مرتکب قتل ناخواستهٔ شخصی که دشمن او نبوده بشود، می‌تواند به یکی از این شهرها فرار کند و در امان باشد.

⁴This is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, and didn’t hate him in time past;

⁴ برای نمونه، اگر مردی با همسایهٔ خود برای قطع کردن درخت به جنگل برود و هنگام قطع درخت، تبر از دسته‌اش جدا شود و باعث مرگ مرد دیگر شود، او می‌تواند به یکی از این شهرها فرار کند و امن باشد.

⁵as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to chop wood, and his hand fetches a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle, and lights on his neighbor, so that he dies; he shall flee to one of these cities and live:

⁵ اگر فقط یک شهر وجود داشته باشد، ممکن است که فاصله‌اش دور باشد و مدّعی خون مقتول به متّهم برسد و در خشم، مرد بی‌گناهی را بکشد. به خصوص که آن مرد در اثر تصادف کشته شده و دشمن او نبوده.

⁶lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he didn’t hate him in time past.

⁶ به این دلیل است که من دستور داده‌ام که سه شهر در نظر بگیرید.

⁷Therefore I command you, saying, You shall set apart three cities for yourselves.

⁷ «هنگامی‌که خداوند سرزمین شما را وسعت دهد، همان‌طور که به نیاکان شما فرمود و تمام سرزمینی را که وعده داده بود به شما بدهد،

⁸If Yahweh your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers;

⁸ آنگاه شما باید سه شهر پناهگاه دیگر نیز داشته باشید. اگر هرچه را امروز فرمان داده‌ام انجام دهید و اگر خداوند خدایتان را دوست داشته باشید و طبق تعالیم او زندگی کنید، او این سرزمین را به شما خواهد داد.

⁹if you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you this day, to love Yahweh your God, and to walk ever in his ways; then you shall add three cities more for yourselves, besides these three:

⁹ چنین کنید تا مردم بی‌گناه کشته نشوند و شما به علّت کشتن آنها در سرزمینی که خداوند به شما خواهد داد، گناهکار نباشید.

¹⁰that innocent blood not be shed in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be on you.

¹⁰ «امّا اگر شخصی با کسی دشمنی داشته باشد و او را عمداً بکشد و بعد به یکی از آن شهرها فرار کند،

¹¹But if any man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and rises up against him, and strikes him mortally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities;

¹¹ در آن صورت رهبران شهر خودش، باید به دنبال قاتل بفرستند که او را از آنجا بیاورند و به دست مدّعی خون مقتول تسلیم کنند تا کشته شود.

¹²then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

¹² بر او رحم نکنید و باید اسرائیل را از خون بی‌گناه پاک سازید تا در همهٔ کارها موفّق باشید.

¹³Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

¹³ «در سرزمینی که خداوند خدایتان به شما می‌دهد مرز سرزمین همسایهٔ خود را که از قدیم تعیین شده است تغییر ندهید.

¹⁴You shall not remove your neighbor’s landmark, which they of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit, in the land that Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.

¹⁴ «برای محکومیّت کسی یک شاهد کافی نیست، حداقل دو شاهد برای اثبات گناه لازم است.

¹⁵One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.

¹⁵ اگر شاهد مقرضی به دروغ مردی را متّهم به جنایت کند،

¹⁶If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing,

¹⁶ هر دو نفر باید به مکانی که خداوند برای پرستش خود برگزیده، رفته و توسط کاهنان و قاضیان حاضر، مورد قضاوت قرار گیرند.

¹⁷then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Yahweh, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days;

¹⁷ قضات باید در مورد این قضیه به دقّت تحقیق کنند و اگر ثابت شد که شاهد دروغ می‌گوید،

¹⁸and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother;

¹⁸ مجازات او، باید مجازات مرد متّهم باشد. به این ترتیب شرارت از میان شما پاک خواهد شد.

¹⁹then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you.

¹⁹ آنگاه سایر مردم وقتی از این قضیه باخبر شوند، می‌ترسند و کسی جرأت نمی‌کند که مرتکب چنین جنایتی بشود. در چنین موارد، ترّحم نشان ندهید بلکه حکم شما این باشد: جان به عوض جان، چشم به عوض چشم، دندان به عوض دندان، دست به عوض دست و پا به عوض پا.

²⁰Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of you.

²⁰ در چنین موارد، ترّحم نشان ندهید بلکه حکم شما این باشد: جان به عوض جان، چشم به عوض چشم، دندان به عوض دندان، دست به عوض دست و پا به عوض پا.

²¹Your eyes shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
