¹Now it happened in the days of Ahasuerus (this is Ahasuerus who reigned from India even to Ethiopia, over one hundred twenty-seven provinces),

¹ خشایارشاه شاهنشاه پارس، از تخت ملوکانه در پایتخت خود یعنی شهر شوش، بر قلمرویی شامل یکصد و بیست و هفت استان، از هندوستان تا حبشه فرمانروایی می‌کرد.

²that in those days, when the King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,

² او در سومین سال سلطنت خود به افتخار افسران ارشد و وزرایش مهمانی بزرگی برپا کرد. سرکردگان نظامی پارس و ماد و همچنین والیان و نُجبای استانها در آن جشن حضور داشتند.

³in the third year of his reign, he made a feast for all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him.

³ و پادشاه تمام غنایم دربار و شکوه و جلال آن را به مدّت شش ماه تمام به معرض تماشا گذاشت.

⁴He displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty many days, even one hundred eighty days.

⁴ سپس پادشاه مهمانی بزرگی برای تمام اهالی پایتخت، از فقیر و غنی ترتیب داد. محل این مهمانی در باغهای کاخ سلطنتی بود و مدّت یک هفتهٔ تمام ادامه داشت.

⁵When these days were fulfilled, the king made a seven day feast for all the people who were present in Shushan the palace, both great and small, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace.

⁵ حیاط کاخ با پرده‌های کتانی، آبی و سفید تزئین شده بود. این پرده‌ها به وسیلهٔ ریسمانهای کتانی بنفش به حلقه‌های نقره‌ای ستونهای مرمر متّصل بودند. تختهای طلا و نقره در حیاط کاخ بر روی سنگ‌فرشهایی از مرمر سفید، دُر، مرمر سیاه و فیروزه قرار داشت.

⁶There were hangings of white, green, and blue material, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and marble pillars. The couches were of gold and silver, on a pavement of red, white, yellow, and black marble.

⁶ شراب در جامهای طلایی که به اشکال مختلف ساخته شده بود صرف می‌شد و پادشاه در دادن شراب سلطنتی به مردم سخاوت فراوان داشت.

⁷They gave them drinks in golden vessels of various kinds, including royal wine in abundance, according to the bounty of the king.

⁷ در نوشیدن شراب محدودیتی وجود نداشت؛ زیرا پادشاه به خادمان دربار امر کرده بود که هرکس هرقدر بخواهد، می‌تواند بنوشد.

⁸In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had instructed all the officials of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.

⁸ در همان موقع، ملکه وشتی در داخل کاخ خشایارشاه مهمانی برای زنان ترتیب داده بود.

⁹Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.

⁹ در هفتمین روز مهمانی، شاهنشاه که از نوشیدن شراب سرمست بود، هفت خواجه سرای دربار را که مهومان، بِزتا، حربونا، بغتا، ابغتا، زاتر، و کارکاس نام داشتند و خادمان شخصی او بودند، فراخواند

¹⁰On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcass, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,

¹⁰ و به آنها امر کرد که ملکه وشتی را، با تاج سلطنتی بر سر، به حضور او بیاورند. ملکه زن زیبایی بود و پادشاه می‌خواست افسران و تمام مهمانان او ببینند که ملکه چقدر زیباست.

¹¹to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was beautiful.

¹¹ امّا وقتی خادمان فرمان پادشاه را به ملکه وشتی ابلاغ کردند، او از آمدن خودداری کرد. پادشاه از این موضوع بسیار خشمگین شد.

¹²But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was very angry, and his anger burned in him.

¹² پادشاه عادت داشت که نظر مشاوران خود را در مورد اجرای قانون جویا شود. بنابراین، مشاوران خود را که می‌دانستند چه باید کرد فراخواند.

¹³Then the king said to the wise men, who knew the times, (for it was the king’s custom to consult those who knew law and judgment;

¹³ نام این هفت نفر از بزرگان پارس و ماد کرشنا، شیتار، ادماتا، ترشیش، مرسنا، و مموکان بود. این اشخاص بیش از سایر افسران مورد اعتماد پادشاه بودند و در کشور دارای مقام بالایی بودند.

¹⁴and the next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and sat first in the kingdom),

¹⁴ پادشاه به این افراد گفت: «من، خشایارشاه، خادمان خود را با فرمانی به نزد وشتی ملکه فرستادم، ولی او از فرمان من سرپیچی کرد. مجازات او طبق قانون چیست؟»

¹⁵“What shall we do to the queen Vashti according to law, because she has not done the bidding of the King Ahasuerus by the eunuchs?”

¹⁵ آنگاه مموکان به پادشاه و افسران او گفت: «ملکه وشتی نه تنها به پادشاه بلکه به مأموران و تمام مردان در سراسر مملکت اهانت کرده است.

¹⁶Memucan answered before the king and the princes, “Vashti the queen has not done wrong to just the king, but also to all the princes, and to all the people who are in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus.

¹⁶ وقتی زنان در تمام حکومت بشنوند که ملکه چه کرده است، با تحقیر به شوهران خود می‌نگرند. آنها خواهند گفت: 'خشایارشاه فرمان داد که ملکه وشتی به حضور او برود، امّا ملکه از فرمان او اطاعت نکرد.'

¹⁷For this deed of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to show contempt for their husbands, when it is reported, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she didn’t come.’

¹⁷ وقتی زنان افسران دربار پارس و ماد از رفتار ملکه آگاه شوند، قبل از آن که روز به پایان برسد، آن را برای شوهران خود تعریف می‌کنند. دیگر زنان احترامی برای شوهران خود قایل نمی‌شوند و این موضوع موجب خشم شوهران می‌گردد.

¹⁸Today, the princesses of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s deed will tell all the king’s princes. This will cause much contempt and wrath.

¹⁸ اگر اعلیحضرت صلاح بدانند فرمانی صادر کنند که ملکه وشتی دیگر هیچ‌گاه اجازهٔ شرفیابی به حضور پادشاه را نداشته باشد. همچنین امر فرمایند که این مطلب در قوانین پارس و ماد ثبت گردد تا هرگز قابل تغییر نباشد. سپس زنی که بهتر از او باشد به عنوان ملکه انتخاب شود.

¹⁹“If it please the king, let a royal commandment go from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it cannot be altered, that Vashti may never again come before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.

¹⁹ وقتی این فرمان شما در سراسر این شاهنشاهی وسیع اعلام شود، آنگاه تمام زنها با شوهران خود چه فقیر و چه ثروتمند، با احترام رفتار خواهند کرد.»

²⁰When the king’s decree which he shall make is published throughout all his kingdom (for it is great), all the wives will give their husbands honor, both great and small.”

²⁰ پادشاه و مأمورانش این پیشنهاد را پسندیدند و پادشاه مطابق پیشنهاد مموکان عمل کرد و به هر یک از استانهای شاهنشاهی پیامی به خط و زبان محلی آن استان فرستاد که مطابق آن شوهران رئیس خانوادهٔ خود باشند و امرشان باید اطاعت شود.

²¹This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan:

²¹ و به هر یک از استانهای شاهنشاهی پیامی به خط و زبان محلی آن استان فرستاد که مطابق آن شوهران رئیس خانوادهٔ خود باشند و امرشان باید اطاعت شود.

²²for he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, that every man should rule his own house, speaking in the language of his own people.
