¹On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

¹ در آن روز، وقتی کتاب موسی را با صدای بلند برای مردم خواندند به قسمتی رسیدند که در آن نوشته شده بود که عمونیان و موآبیان هرگز نباید به گردهمآیی قوم خدا وارد شوند.

²because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: however our God turned the curse into a blessing.

² زیرا ایشان به قوم اسرائیل هنگام خروج از مصر نان و آب ندادند. بلکه به بلعام پول دادند که اسرائیل را لعنت نماید، امّا خدای ما لعنت را به برکت تبدیل کرد.

³It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

³ هنگامی‌که قوم اسرائیل این قانون را شنیدند، همهٔ بیگانگان را جدا ساختند.

⁴Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,

⁴ الیاشیب کاهن که انباردار معبد بزرگ بود و از اقوام طوبیا بود،

⁵had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the wave offerings for the priests.

⁵ اتاق بزرگی را به طوبیا داده بود. این اتاق فقط برای انبار کردن هدایای غلّه، بُخور و ظروف و معبد بزرگ، ده یک و شراب و روغن زیتونی بود که به عنوان سهم معیّن به لاویان، سرایندگان، نگهبانان و هدایای کاهنان داده می‌شد.

⁶But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king,

⁶ در زمان آن رویداد، من در اورشلیم نبودم؛ زیرا در سال سی و دوم سلطنت اردشیر پادشاه بابل* پادشاه بابل لقبی بود که پس از فتح بابل توسط کوروش به او داده شد و به ظاهر در مورد اردشیر نیز به کار برده می‌شده است. نزد او رفته بودم. پس از مدّتی از شاهنشاه اجازهٔ رفتن گرفتم

⁷and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.

⁷ و به اورشلیم بازگشتم. آنجا با تعجّب دریافتم که الیاشیب اجازه داده بود، طوبیا از اتاقی در معبد بزرگ استفاده کند.

⁸It grieved me severely: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the room.

⁸ بسیار خشمگین شدم و لوازم او را از اتاق بیرون ریختم.

⁹Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms: and there brought I again the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense.

⁹ دستور دادم که اتاق را تطهیر کنند و ظروف معبد بزرگ و هدایای غلّه و بُخور به آن بازگردانده شود.

¹⁰I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled everyone to his field.

¹⁰ همچنین دریافتم که سهم لاویان و سرایندگان به ایشان داده نشده بود. و لاویان و سرایندگانی که در معبد بزرگ خدمت می‌کردند به کشتزارهای خود بازگشته بودند.

¹¹Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

¹¹ پس رهبران را سرزنش کردم زیرا اجازه داده‌ بودند که معبد بزرگ نادیده گرفته شود. آنگاه لاویان و سرایندگان را بازآوردم و ایشان را بار دیگر بر کارهایشان گماردم.

¹²Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries.

¹² آنگاه دوباره تمام قوم اسرائیل آوردن ده یک غلّه، شراب و روغن زیتون را به انبارهای معبد بزرگ آغاز کردند.

¹³I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.

¹³ سپس مسئولیّت انبارها را به شلمیای کاهن و صادوق عالم تورات، و فدایای لاوی سپردم. حانان پسر زکور، نوهٔ متنیا را به دستیاری ایشان برگزیدم؛ زیرا ایشان درستکار به شمار می‌آمدند و من می‌دانستم که می‌توانم به آن مردان در کار پخش کالا به همکارانشان اعتماد کنم.

¹⁴Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances.

¹⁴ ای خدای من، کارهایی را که برای معبد بزرگ و نیایش در آن انجام داده‌ام، به یاد آور.

¹⁵In those days saw I in Judah some men treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food.

¹⁵ در آن روزها، در یهودا بعضی را دیدم که در روز سبت انگورها را می‌ا‌فشردند و برخی دیگر غلّه و شراب، انگور، انجیر و کالاهای دیگر بار الاغ می‌کردند و به اورشلیم می‌بردند. من به ایشان هشدار دادم که در روز سبت هیچ کالایی نفروشند.

¹⁶There lived men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

¹⁶ گروهی از اهالی صور که در اورشلیم زندگی می‌کردند، ماهی و کالاهای گوناگونی به شهر می‌آوردند و در سبت به مردم ما می‌فروختند.

¹⁷Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?

¹⁷ رهبران یهودی را سرزنش کردم و به ایشان گفتم: «این چه‌کار پلیدی است که انجام می‌دهید و روز سبت را بی‌حرمت می‌کنید.

¹⁸Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

¹⁸ آیا نیاکان شما با چنین کاری باعث نشدند که خدای ما این‌همه بلا بر ما و بر این شهر وارد بیاورد؟ و هنوز شما سبت را بی‌حرمت می‌کنید و خدا را بر اسرائیل بیشتر خشمگین می‌سازید.»

¹⁹It came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

¹⁹ بنابراین دستور دادم که دروازه‌های شهر از شروع سبت تا پایان آن بسته شوند. گروهی از خدمتگزاران خود را بر دروازه‌ها گماردم تا مطمئن شوم که هیچ چیزی در روز سبت به شهر وارد نمی‌شود.

²⁰So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

²⁰ بازرگانان و فروشندگان کالاهای گوناگون یکی دو بار جمعه شب را در خارج از دیوارهای شهر گذراندند.

²¹Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

²¹ امّا به ایشان هشدار دادم و گفتم: «چرا شب را در پشت دیوار سپری کردید، اگر بار دیگر چنین کنید بزور متوسّل خواهم شد.» از آن پس دیگر در روز سبت نیامدند.

²²I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.

²² به لاویان دستور دادم که خود را تطهیر سازند و به نگهبانی دروازه‌ها بپردازند تا از نگه داشته شدن روز سبت اطمینان حاصل شود. خدایا برای این کارها نیز مرا به یادآور و برحسب بزرگیِ محبّت پایدارت مرا ببخش.

²³In those days also saw I the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

²³ همچنین در آن روزها دریافتم که یهودیان با زنان اقوام اشدودی، موآبی و عمونی ازدواج کرده‌ بودند.

²⁴and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

²⁴ نیمی از فرزاندانشان به زبان اشدودی یا به زبانهای دیگر سخن می‌گفتند و زبان ما را نمی‌دانستند، امّا به زبانهای مردم گوناگون دیگر سخن می‌گفتند.

²⁵I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

²⁵ من آن مردان را سرزنش کردم و ایشان را لعنت کردم و آنان را کتک زدم و مویهایشان را کَندم و مجبورشان کردم که به نام خداوند سوگند یاد کنند که هرگز خودشان و فرزندانشان با بیگانگان ازدواج نکنند.

²⁶Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.

²⁶ سپس گفتم: «این زنان بیگانه بودند که سلیمان پادشاه را به گناه کشیدند. او مردی بزرگتر از تمامی پادشاهان ملل دیگر بود. خدا او را دوست داشت و او را پادشاه تمام اسرائیل کرد. با این وجود او در گناه افتاد.

²⁷Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?”

²⁷ آیا ما باید نمونهٔ شما را پیروی کنیم و با ازدواج با زنان بیگانه از خدای خود سرپیچی کنیم؟»

²⁸One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

²⁸ یکی از پسران یهویاداع، پسر الیاشیب کاهن اعظم با دختر سنبلط، از شهر بیت حورون ازدواج کرده بود. بنابراین من او را مجبور کردم که اورشلیم را ترک کند.

²⁹Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

²⁹ خدایا، به یاد آور که این مردم چگونه مقام کهانت و پیمانی را که با کاهنان و لاویان بستی، بی‌حرمت کردند.

³⁰Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;

³⁰ پس ایشان را از هر چیز بیگانه پاک ساختم و آیین‌نامه‌ای برای کاهنان و لاویان مشخص کردم به طوری که هرکس وظیفهٔ خود را بداند. ترتیبی دادم تا هدایای هیزم برای سوزاندن هدایا و نوبر غلاّت و میوه‌ها در زمان مناسب آورده شود. ای خدای من تمام اینها را برای نیکویی من به یاد آور.

³¹and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.

³¹ ترتیبی دادم تا هدایای هیزم برای سوزاندن هدایا و نوبر غلاّت و میوه‌ها در زمان مناسب آورده شود. ای خدای من تمام اینها را برای نیکویی من به یاد آور.
