¹After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes who were with him.

¹ مدّتی بعد، خشایارشاه شخصی به نام هامان را به مقام صدارت منصوب کرد. هامان پسر همداتا و از خاندان اجاج بود.

²All the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate bowed down, and paid homage to Haman; for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai didn’t bow down or pay him homage.

² پادشاه امر کرد که تمام مأموران و خادمان دربار در مقابل هامان تعظیم کرده زانو بزنند. همهٔ این افراد از امر پادشاه اطاعت کردند غیراز مردخای که از این کار امتناع ورزید.

³Then the king’s servants, who were in the king’s gate, said to Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s commandment?”

³ سایر مأموران و خادمان دربار، از او پرسیدند: «چرا از امر پادشاه اطاعت نمی‌کنی؟»

⁴Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily to him, and he didn’t listen to them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.

⁴ آنها هر روز اصرار کرده و از او می‌خواستند که مانند دیگران به هامان احترام بگذارد، ولی مردخای به سخن آنها گوش نمی‌داد و به آنها گفته بود که: «من یهودی هستم و نمی‌توانم در برابر هامان تعظیم کنم.» پس آنها جریان را به اطّلاع هامان رسانیدند و نمی‌دانستند آیا هامان رفتار مردخای را تحمّل خواهد کرد یا نه.

⁵When Haman saw that Mordecai didn’t bow down, nor pay him homage, Haman was full of wrath.

⁵ هامان وقتی فهمید مردخای حاضر نیست در برابر او تعظیم کند، بسیار غضبناک شد.

⁶But he scorned the thought of laying hands on Mordecai alone, for they had made known to him Mordecai’s people. Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even Mordecai’s people.

⁶ و وقتی پی برد او یهودی است تصمیم گرفت نه تنها مردخای، بلکه تمام یهودیان شاهنشاهی پارس را به قتل برساند.

⁷In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, and chose the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

⁷ در ماه نیسان یعنی اولین ماه از دوازدهمین سال سلطنت خشایارشاه، هامان دستور داد با پوریم فال بگیرند تا روز و ماه مناسب را برای انجام نقشه‌اش بیابند. روز سیزدهم از ماه اَدار که دوازدهمین ماه سال بود برای اجرای این کار مناسب تشخیص داده شد.

⁸Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom, and their laws are different than other people’s. They don’t keep the king’s laws. Therefore it is not for the king’s profit to allow them to remain.

⁸ پس هامان به پادشاه گفت: «ملّتی از نژاد متفاوت در سراسر حکومت تو و در هر استان پراکنده شده‌اند. آداب و رسوم آنها برخلاف آداب و رسوم سایر مردم می‌باشد. از آن گذشته آنها قوانین این مملکت را رعایت نمی‌کنند. از این رو به نفع شما نیست که متحمّل آنها شوید.

⁹If it pleases the king, let it be written that they be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who are in charge of the king’s business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.”

⁹ اگر اعلیحضرت صلاح بدانند، دستوری صادر شود تا مطابق آن همهٔ آنان کشته شوند. اگر چنین دستوری صادر فرمایید، من تعهّد می‌کنم سیصد و چهل و پنج تُن نقره برای ادارهٔ امور شاهنشاهی به خزانه‌داری سلطنتی پرداخت کنم.»

¹⁰The king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.

¹⁰ پادشاه انگشتری خود را که با آن فرامین رسمی سلطنتی را مُهر می‌زد، از انگشت خود در آورد و به هامان پسر همداتای اجاجی، دشمن قوم یهود داد.

¹¹The king said to Haman, “The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.”

¹¹ پادشاه به او گفت: «این قوم و ثروت آنها متعلّق به توست، هرطور که می‌خواهی با آنها رفتار کن.»

¹²Then the king’s scribes were called in on the first month, on the thirteenth day of the month; and all that Haman commanded was written to the king’s satraps, and to the governors who were over every province, and to the princes of every people, to every province according its writing, and to every people in their language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus, and it was sealed with the king’s ring.

¹² پس در روز سیزدهم ماه اول هامان منشیان پادشاه را فراخواند و متن فرمان را برای آنها انشاء نمود و از آنان خواست تا آن را به تمامی زبانها و خطهای متداول در حکومت ترجمه كنند و سپس فرمان مذكور را به تمامی امیران، فرمانداران و صاحب‎‌منصبان بفرستند. این فرمان با نام و مُهر خشایارشاه صادر و ممهور گردید.

¹³Letters were sent by couriers into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to plunder their possessions.

¹³ مأموران مخصوص این فرمان را به کلّیه نواحی شاهنشاهی رساندند. طبق آن فرمان تمام یهودیان، از پیر و جوان، مرد و زن می‌بایست در یک روز، یعنی در روز سیزدهم ماه اَدار، کشته شوند. آنها می‌بایست بدون ترحّم کشته شده و اموالشان ضبط گردد.

¹⁴A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that they should be ready against that day.

¹⁴ متن فرمان می‌بایست در هر استان به اطّلاع عموم می‌رسید تا همه برای آن روز آماده باشند. به دستور پادشاه این فرمان در شهر شوش، پایتخت کشور به اطّلاع عموم رسانیده شد و مأموران مخصوص این اخبار را به سایر استان نیز رسانیدند. درحالی‌که شهر شوش در اضطراب بود، پادشاه و هامان نشسته با هم شراب می‌نوشیدند.

¹⁵The couriers went forth in haste by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given out in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.

¹⁵ به دستور پادشاه این فرمان در شهر شوش، پایتخت کشور به اطّلاع عموم رسانیده شد و مأموران مخصوص این اخبار را به سایر استان نیز رسانیدند. درحالی‌که شهر شوش در اضطراب بود، پادشاه و هامان نشسته با هم شراب می‌نوشیدند.
