¹Now when Mordecai found out all that was done, Mordecai tore his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and wailed loudly and a bitterly.

¹ وقتی مردخای از این امر اطّلاع یافت، از شدّت ناراحتی لباس خود را درید و پلاس بر تن کرد. خاکستر بر سر خود ریخت و در کوچه‌های شهر راه می‌رفت و با صدای بلند گریه و زاری می‌کرد،

²He came even before the king’s gate, for no one is allowed inside the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.

² تا اینکه به در ورودی کاخ رسید. او داخل نشد، چون هیچ‌کس با پلاس اجازهٔ ورود به کاخ را نداشت.

³In every province, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

³ در تمام استان، در هر جا فرمان پادشاه به اطّلاع مردم می‌رسید، یهودیان با صدای بلند می‌گریستند. آنها روزه می‌گرفتند، گریه و ناله می‌کردند و بسیاری از آنان پلاس پوشیده بر خاکستر می‌نشستند.

⁴Esther’s maidens and her eunuchs came and told her this, and the queen was exceedingly grieved. She sent clothing to Mordecai, to replace his sackcloth; but he didn’t receive it.

⁴ وقتی ندیمه‌‌ها و خواجه سرایان استر از آنچه مردخای می‌کرد به او خبر دادند، استر بسیار ناراحت شد. او برای مردخای لباس فرستاد تا آن را به جای پلاس بپوشد، ولی مردخای نپذیرفت.

⁵Then Esther called for Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs, whom he had appointed to attend her, and commanded him to go to Mordecai, to find out what this was, and why it was.

⁵ آنگاه او، هتاک یکی از خواجه سرایانی را که پادشاه به خدمتش گماشته بود، فراخواند و از او خواست پیش مردخای برود و ببیند چه شده و چرا مردخای چنین می‌کند.

⁶So Hathach went out to Mordecai, to city square which was before the king’s gate.

⁶ هتاک نزد مردخای که در میدان شهر در جلوی ورودی کاخ بود، رفت.

⁷Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the destruction of the Jews.

⁷ مردخای همه‌چیز را دربارهٔ خود و مقدار پولی که هامان حاضر بود در مقابل کشتن تمام یهودیان به خزانهٔ دربار بپردازد، به او گفت.

⁸He also gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given out in Shushan to destroy them, to show it to Esther, and to declare it to her, and to urge her to go in to the king, to make supplication to him, and to make request before him, for her people.

⁸ و یک نسخه از فرمانی را که در شهر شوش منتشر شده بود که به موجب آن باید همهٔ یهودیان کشته شوند به هتاک داد. مردخای از او خواهش کرد که آن را به استر برساند و اوضاع را برای او شرح دهد و او را وادار کند نزد پادشاه رفته، از او تقاضا کند بر قومش ترحّم شود.

⁹Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

⁹ هتاک رفته پیغام مردخای را به اطّلاع استر رسانید.

¹⁰Then Esther spoke to Hathach, and gave him a message to Mordecai:

¹⁰ و استر از او خواست این پیغام را به مردخای بازگرداند:

¹¹“All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, know, that whoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court without being called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king might hold out the golden scepter, that he may live. I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days.”

¹¹ «اگر کسی، چه مرد و چه زن، بدون اینکه فراخوانده شده باشد، برای دیدن پادشاه وارد قسمت اندرونی کاخ شود، جزایش مرگ است. این قانون است. همه، از مشاوران مخصوص گرفته تا مردم عادی استان، این را می‌دانند. فقط در یک صورت این قانون اجرا نخواهد شد و آن هم زمانی است که پادشاه عصای سلطنتی خود را به طرف آن شخص دراز کند. در آن صورت جان او در امان خواهد بود. امّا الآن یک ماه است که پادشاه مرا به حضور خود نخوانده است.»

¹² وقتی مردخای پیام استر را دریافت کرد

¹³Then Mordecai asked them return answer to Esther, “Don’t think to yourself that you will escape in the king’s house any more than all the Jews.

¹³ در پاسخ به او اخطار کرده گفت: «تصوّر نکن چون در کاخ سلطنتی هستی جان تو نسبت به سایر یهودیان در امنیّت بیشتری قرار دارد.

¹⁴For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Who knows if you haven’t come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

¹⁴ اگر تو در زمان خطیری مثل امروز ساکت بمانی، کمک و نجات از جای دیگری برای یهودیان خواهد رسید. امّا تو خواهی مرد و خاندان پدری‌ات از بین خواهد رفت. کسی نمی‌داند، شاید به‌خاطر چنین روزی تو به این مقام رسیدی و ملکهٔ پادشاه پارس شدی.»

¹⁵Then Esther asked them to answer Mordecai,

¹⁵ استر در پاسخ، این پیغام را برای مردخای فرستاد:

¹⁶“Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.”

¹⁶ «برو و تمام یهودیان مقیم شهر شوش را جمع کن. همگی روزه بگیرید تا سه روز و سه شب چیزی نخورید و نیاشامید. من نیز به اتّفاق ندیمه‌هایم همین کار را انجام خواهیم داد. بعد از آن من به حضور پادشاه خواهم رفت، هرچند این عمل برخلاف قانون است. حتّی اگر لازم باشد در این راه بمیرم، خواهم مرد.» پس مردخای رفت و آنچه را که استر به او گفته بود، انجام داد.

¹⁷So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
