¹Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):

¹ فرزندان یعقوب (اسرائیل) که هرکدام با خانوادهٔ خود همراه یعقوب به مصر رفتند، از این قرار بودند:

²Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

² رئوبین، شمعون، لاوی، یهودا،

³Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

³ یساکار، زبولون، بنیامین،

⁴Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

⁴ دان، نفتالی، جاد و اشیر.

⁵All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

⁵ تعداد تمام کسانی‌که مستقیماً از نسل یعقوب بودند، هفتاد نفر بود. یوسف پسر او هم از قبل در مصر بود.

⁶Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation.

⁶ با گذشت زمان، یوسف و تمام برادران او و تمام کسانی‌که از آن دوره بودند، مردند.

⁷The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

⁷ ولی نسل آنها یعنی بنی‌اسرائیل چنان بارور و کثیر شدند که سراسر مصر را پُر کردند.

⁸Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.

⁸ بعد از مدّتی فرعون جدیدی در مصر به قدرت رسید که چیزی دربارهٔ یوسف نمی‌دانست.

⁹He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

⁹ او به مردم خود گفت: «تعداد بنی‌اسرائیلی‌ها خیلی زیاد شده و حتّی از ما هم نیرومندتر شده‌اند.

¹⁰Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies, and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”

¹⁰ اگر جنگی برپا شود، ممکن است آنها با دشمنان ما همدست شوند و برضد ما بجنگند و از این سرزمین فرار کنند. ما باید راهی پیدا کنیم که نگذاریم آنها زیاد شوند.»

¹¹Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

¹¹ بنابراین مصری‌ها سرکارگرانی برای اسرائیلی‌ها تعیین کردند تا با کارهای سخت، آنها را ناتوان و ذلیل سازند. آنها شهرهای فیتوم و رعمسیس را جهت مرکز تدارکات برای فرعون می‌ساختند.

¹²But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They were grieved because of the children of Israel.

¹² امّا هرچه مصری‌ها بیشتر بنی‌اسرائیل را اذیّت می‌کردند، تعداد آنها بیشتر می‌شد و همه‌جا را پُر می‌کردند. به طوری که مصری‌ها از اسرائیلی‌ها می‌ترسیدند.

¹³The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,

¹³ ولی مصری‌ها به بنی‌اسرائیل بیشتر ظلم می‌کردند و آنها را به بردگی گرفته به کارهای بسیار سخت از قبیل، خانه‌سازی و هر نوع کار کشاورزی وادار می‌ساختند و هیچ رحمی ‌به آنها نمی‌کردند، به طوری که زندگی آنها تلخ شده بود.

¹⁴and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

¹⁴ فرعون، به شفره و فوعه، قابله‌های عبرانی دستور داد که:

¹⁵The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,

¹⁵ «وقتی برای زائوهای عبرانی قابلگی می‌کنید، نگاه کنید، اگر نوزاد پسر است او را بکشید، ولی اگر دختر است او را زنده بگذارید.»

¹⁶and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool; if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

¹⁶ امّا قابله‌ها از خدا ترسیدند و از دستور فرعون اطاعت نکردند و پسران را نکشتند.

¹⁷But the midwives feared God, The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.

¹⁷ فرعون قابله‌ها را احضار کرد و به آنها گفت: «چرا این کار را می‌کنید؟ چرا شما می‌گذارید پسرها زنده بمانند؟»

¹⁸The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and have saved the boys alive?”

¹⁸ قابله‌ها به فرعون گفتند: «زنهای عبرانی موقع زاییدن مانند زنهای مصری نیستند. آنها قوی هستند و به راحتی می‌زایند و پیش از آنکه ما برسیم بچّه به دنیا می‌آید.»

¹⁹The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

¹⁹ چون قابله‌ها از خدا ترسیدند، خداوند به آنها احسان کرد و آنها خودشان دارای خانواده شدند.

²⁰God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.

²⁰ و بنی‌اسرائیل هم مرتب زیادتر و تواناتر می‌شدند. پس فرعون، به مصری‌ها فرمان داد: «هر نوزاد پسر عبرانی را که به دنیا می‌آید به رود نیل بیاندازید ولی دخترها را زنده بگذارید.»

²¹It happened, because the midwives feared God, that he gave them families.

²¹ پس فرعون، به مصری‌ها فرمان داد: «هر نوزاد پسر عبرانی را که به دنیا می‌آید به رود نیل بیاندازید ولی دخترها را زنده بگذارید.»

²²Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”
