¹A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.

¹ در همین زمان مردی از طایفهٔ لاوی، با زنی از طایفهٔ خویش بود ازدواج کرد،

²The woman conceived, and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.

² و آن زن برای او پسری زایید. وقتی آن زن دید که نوزادش چقدر زیباست، مدّت سه ماه او را پنهان کرد.

³When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.

³ امّا چون نتوانست بیشتر او را پنهان کند، سبدی را که از نی درست شده بود برداشت و آن را قیراندود کرد تا آب به درونش نفوذ نكند. او بچّه را در درون گذاشت و سپس آن را در میان نیزار در کنار رود نیل رها کرد.

⁴His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.

⁴ خواهر طفل، کمی ‌دورتر ایستاده بود تا ببیند چه اتّفاقی برای بچّه می‌افتد.

⁵Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her handmaid to get it.

⁵ دختر فرعون برای حمام کردن به رود نیل آمد. وقتی ندیمه‌هایش در کنار رود قدم می‌زدند او سبد را در میان نیزار دید. پس یکی از کنیزانش را فرستاد تا سبد را بیاورد.

⁶She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

⁶ دختر فرعون آن را باز کرد و پسر بچّه‌ای را دید. بچّه گریه می‌کرد و دختر فرعون دلش به حال بچّه سوخت و گفت: «این بچهٔ یکی از عبرانیان است.»

⁷Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

⁷ سپس خواهر طفل جلو آمد و به دختر فرعون گفت: «می‌خواهید بروم و یکی از زنهای عبرانیان را بیاورم تا بچّه را برای شما شیر بدهد؟»

⁸Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The maiden went and called the child’s mother.

⁸ دختر فرعون گفت: «آری برو و این كار را بكن.» دختر رفت و مادر خود طفل را آورد.

⁹Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed it.

⁹ دختر فرعون گفت: «این بچّه‌ را ببر و برای من نگه‌دار. من مزد تو را خواهم داد.» پس آن زن بچّه را گرفت تا از او مواظبت کند.

¹⁰The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Moses” sounds like the Hebrew for “draw out”. and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

¹⁰ بعدها وقتی‌که بچّه به قدر كافی بزرگ شد، او را به نزد دختر فرعون آورد. دختر فرعون او را به پسری خود قبول کرد و گفت: «من او را از آب گرفتم، پس اسم او را موسی می‌گذارم.»

¹¹It happened in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.

¹¹ وقتی موسی بزرگ شد، رفت تا قوم خود، عبرانیان را ببیند. او دید که چگونه آنان را به کارهای سخت وادار کرده‌اند. حتّی دید که یک نفر مصری یک عبرانی را كه از قوم خود موسی بود، کتک می‌زند.

¹²He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

¹² موسی به اطراف نگاه کرد و چون کسی آنجا نبود، آن مصری را کشت و جنازه‌اش را زیر شن‌ها پنهان کرد.

¹³He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”

¹³ روز بعد برگشت و دید که دو نفر عبرانی با هم گلاویز شده‌اند. به کسی‌که مقصّر بود گفت: «چرا هم‌نژاد خود را می‌زنی؟»

¹⁴He said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.”

¹⁴ آن مرد در جواب گفت: «چه کسی تو را حاکم و قاضی ما کرده است؟ آیا می‌خواهی مرا هم مثل آن مصری بکشی؟» موسی ترسید و با خود فکر کرد، «حتماً همهٔ مردم فهمیده‌اند که من چه کار کرده‌ام.»

¹⁵Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.

¹⁵ وقتی فرعون این ماجرا را شنید، تصمیم گرفت موسی را بکشد. امّا موسی فرار کرد و به سرزمین مدیان رفت و در آنجا ساکن شد.

¹⁶Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

¹⁶ روزی وقتی موسی بر سر چاهی نشسته بود، هفت دختر یترون، که کاهن مدیان بود، بر سر چاه آمدند. آنها آبخورها را پُر کردند تا گلّهٔ گوسفندان و بُزهای پدر خود را سیراب کنند.

¹⁷The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

¹⁷ امّا بعضی از چوپانان، دختران یترون را از سر چاه دور کردند. پس موسی به کمک دخترها رفت و گلّهٔ آنها را سیراب کرد.

¹⁸When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “How is it that you have returned so early today?”

¹⁸ وقتی دختران به نزد پدرشان یترون برگشتند، پدرشان پرسید: «چه شد که امروز به این زودی برگشتید؟»

¹⁹They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.”

¹⁹ آنها جواب دادند که یک نفر مصری ما را از دست چوپانان نجات داد و حتّی از چاه آب کشیده گلّهٔ ما را سیراب کرد.

²⁰He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”

²⁰ او از دخترانش پرسید: «آن مرد حالا کجاست؟ چرا او را آنجا رها کردید؟ بروید و از او دعوت کنید تا با ما غذا بخورد.»

²¹Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.

²¹ موسی موافقت کرد که در آنجا زندگی کند و یترون دختر خود صفوره را هم به عقد او درآورد.

²²She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, “Gershom” sounds like the Hebrew for “an alien there.” for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”

²² صفوره پسری زایید. موسی با خود گفت، «من در این سرزمین بیگانه هستم، پس اسم او را جرشوم می‌گذارم.»

²³It happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

²³ چند سال بعد فرعون مرد. امّا بنی‌اسرائیل هنوز از بردگی، آه و ناله می‌کردند و گریه و زاری آنها برای کمک به درگاه خدا رسید.

²⁴God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

²⁴ او دعا و زاری آنها را شنید و پیمانی را که با ابراهیم و اسحاق و یعقوب بسته بود به یاد آورد. خدا، بر قوم اسرائیل نظر کرد و آنها را مورد توجّه قرار داد.

²⁵God saw the children of Israel, and God was concerned about them.

²⁵ خدا، بر قوم اسرائیل نظر کرد و آنها را مورد توجّه قرار داد.
