¹Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”

¹ سپس موسی و هارون به نزد فرعون رفتند و گفتند: «خداوند خدای اسرائیل، چنین می‌فرماید: 'بگذار قوم من بروند تا مراسم عید را در بیابان به احترام من بجا بیاورند.'»

²Pharaoh said, “Who is Yahweh, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go? I don’t know Yahweh, and moreover I will not let Israel go.”

² امّا فرعون گفت: «خداوند کیست که من باید به سخنان او گوش بدهم و اسرائیل را آزاد کنم؟ من خداوند را نمی‌شناسم و بنی‌اسرائیل را هم آزاد نمی‌کنم.»

³They said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Yahweh, our God, lest he fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword.”

³ آنها در جواب گفتند: «خدای عبرانیان خود را بر ما ظاهر کرده است. تو، به ما اجازه بده یک سفر سه روزه به بیابان برویم تا برای خدای خود، قربانی کنیم. اگر ما این کار را نکنیم، او ما را به وسیلهٔ مرض یا جنگ نابود خواهد کرد.»

⁴The king of Egypt said to them, “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, take the people from their work? Get back to your burdens!”

⁴ فرعون به موسی و هارون گفت: «چرا می‌خواهید مردم را از کارشان باز دارید؟ آنها را سر کار خود بازگردانید.

⁵Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them rest from their burdens.”

⁵ قوم شما از مصری‌ها هم بیشتر شده و حالا می‌خواهید از کار دست بکشید؟»

⁶The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

⁶ در همان روز فرعون به سرکارگران مصری و ناظران اسرائیلی دستور داد:

⁷“You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.

⁷ «دیگر برای خشت زدن کاه به آنها ندهند و آنها را مجبور کنند که خودشان کاه جمع کنند.

⁸The number of the bricks, which they made before, you require from them. You shall not diminish anything of it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

⁸ تعداد خشتهایی را هم که می‌زنند، باید به اندازهٔ گذشته باشد و حتّی یکی هم کمتر نباشد. چون تنبلی می‌کنند و به همین خاطر است كه مدام از من می‌خواهند كه بگذارم بروند و برای خدای خود قربانی بگذرانند!

⁹Let heavier work be laid on the men, that they may labor therein; and don’t let them pay any attention to lying words.”

⁹ این مردم را سخت به کار وادار کنید تا همیشه مشغول باشند و فرصت نداشته باشند به سخنان بیهوده فکر کنند.»

¹⁰The taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you straw.

¹⁰ پس سرکارگران و ناظران رفتند و به بنی‌اسرائیل گفتند که فرعون چنین می‌گوید: «من دیگر کاه به شما نخواهم داد.

¹¹Go yourselves, get straw where you can find it, for nothing of your work shall be diminished.’”

¹¹ خودتان باید بروید و از هر کجا که می‌توانید کاه برای خود جمع کنید. امّا همچنان باید همان تعداد خشت را بسازید.»

¹²So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.

¹² پس قوم برای یافتن کاهبن به جای كاه در سرتاسر مصر پراکنده شدند.

¹³The taskmasters were urgent saying, “Fulfill your work quota daily, as when there was straw!”

¹³ سرکارگران مرتب بر آنها فشار می‌آوردند که باید تعداد خشتها در هر روز به اندازهٔ زمانی باشد که کاه می‌گرفتند.

¹⁴The officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, “Why haven’t you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?”

¹⁴ سرکارگران مصری، ناظران اسرائیلی را می‌زدند که چرا تعداد خشتهای ساخته شده به اندازهٔ روزهای گذشته نیست.

¹⁵Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?

¹⁵ پس ناظران به نزد فرعون شكایت برده، گفتند: «عالیجناب، چرا با ما این‌طور رفتار می‌کنی؟

¹⁶No straw is given to your servants, and they tell us, ‘Make brick!’ and behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.”

¹⁶ کاه به غلامانت نمی‌دهند و می‌گویند باید خشت بسازید و مرتب ما را می‌زنند درصورتی‌که تقصیر سرکارگران تو می‌باشد.»

¹⁷But he said, “You are idle! You are idle! Therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to Yahweh.’

¹⁷ فرعون گفت: «شما تنبل هستید و نمی‌خواهید کار کنید. از این جهت است که از من می‌خواهید كه بگذارم بروید و برای خداوند قربانی بگذرانید.

¹⁸Go therefore now, and work, for no straw shall be given to you, yet you shall deliver the same number of bricks!”

¹⁸ حالا به سر کار خود بازگردید. کاه به شما داده نخواهد شد و تعداد خشتهایی هم که می‌زنید باید به اندازهٔ سابق باشد.»

¹⁹The officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble, when it was said, “You shall not diminish anything from your daily quota of bricks!”

¹⁹ وقتی به ناظران اسرائیلی گفته شد که تعداد خشتها باید به اندازهٔ روزهای قبل باشد، فهمیدند که در زحمت افتاده‌اند.

²⁰They met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came out from Pharaoh:

²⁰ چون از نزد فرعون بیرون رفتند، دیدند که موسی و هارون منتظر آنها ایستاده‌اند.

²¹and they said to them, “May Yahweh look at you, and judge, because you have made us a stench to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

²¹ پس به آنها گفتند: «خداوند می‌داند که چه کار کرده‌اید و شما را مجازات خواهد کرد! زیرا شما باعث شده‌اید كه فرعون و درباریانش از ما نفرت داشته باشند. و بهانه‌ای به دست آنها داده‌اید تا ما را بکشند.»

²²Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Why is it that you have sent me?

²² پس موسی بار دیگر به سوی خداوند روی آورد و عرض کرد: «خداوندا، چرا به قوم خود بدی می‌کنی و چرا مرا به اینجا فرستادی؟ چون از وقتی‌که به نزد فرعون رفتم تا پیغام تو را بگویم او با قوم بد رفتاری می‌کند و تو هم هیچ کاری برای رهایی آنها نكرده‌ای!»

²³For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people; neither have you delivered your people at all.”

²³ چون از وقتی‌که به نزد فرعون رفتم تا پیغام تو را بگویم او با قوم بد رفتاری می‌کند و تو هم هیچ کاری برای رهایی آنها نكرده‌ای!»
