¹The word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

¹ خداوند به من فرمود:

²Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;

² «ای انسان فانی، برای قوم اسرائیل مَثَلی بگو و نمونه‌ای ارائه کن.

³and say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar:

³ خداوند متعال، چنین می‌فرماید: عقاب بزرگی بود که بالهایی عظیم و گسترده و پرهایی رنگارنگ داشت. او به لبنان پرواز کرد و سر درخت سرو لبنان را شکست

⁴he cropped off the topmost of the young twigs of it, and carried it to a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.

⁴ و آن را به سرزمین بازرگانی برد و در شهر تاجران گذاشت.

⁵He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters; he set it as a willow tree.

⁵ آنگاه او بذری از سرزمین شما برداشت و در خاک حاصلخیزی در کنار آب فراوان کاشت. او آن را مانند شاخهٔ بیدی قرار داد.

⁶It grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and its roots were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.

⁶ آن جوانه زد و تاکی شد و در روی زمین گسترش یافت. شاخه‌هایش به سوی بالا، به طرف عقاب و ریشه‌هایش در عمق زمین رشد کردند. تاک از شاخه‌ها و برگها پوشیده شده بود.

⁷There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it.

⁷ «عقاب بزرگ دیگری بود با بالهای عظیم که پرهای زیادی داشت. اینک تاک، ریشه‌ها و شاخه‌هایش را به سوی او برگردانید به امیدی که بتواند آب بیشتری از زمینی که در آنجا کاشته شده بود، بگیرد.

⁸It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.

⁸ تاک در خاکی نیکو، نزد آبهای بسیار کاشته شده بود تا شاخه‌هایش رشد کنند، میوه به بار آورد و تاکی با شکوه گردد.

⁹Say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up its roots, and cut off its fruit, that it may wither; that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? and not by a strong arm or many people can it be raised from its roots.

⁹ «خداوند متعال چنین می‌فرماید: آیا کامیاب خواهد شد؟ آیا عقاب نخست آن را ریشه‌کن نخواهد کرد؟ و انگورهایش را نخواهد کند؟ و شاخه‌هایش را نخواهد شکست تا پژمرده گردد؟ برای ریشه‌کن ساختن آن نیازی به بازوی نیرومند و ارتش قدرتمند نیست.

¹⁰Yes, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind touches it? it shall wither in the beds where it grew.

¹⁰ هنگامی‌که کاشته شد، آیا رشد خواهد کرد؟ هنگامی‌که باد شرقی به آن بوزد، آیا کاملاً در جایی که کاشته شده است، پژمرده نخواهد شد؟»

¹¹Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

¹¹ آنگاه خداوند به من فرمود:

¹²Say now to the rebellious house, Don’t you know what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took its king, and its princes, and brought them to him to Babylon:

¹² «اکنون از این سرکشان بپرس آیا معنی این مَثَل را می‌دانند؟ به ایشان بگو پادشاه بابل به اورشلیم آمد و پادشاه و بزرگان را دستگیر کرد و با خود به بابل برد.

¹³and he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;

¹³ او یکی از اعضای خاندان سلطنتی را گرفت و با او پیمان بست و او را سوگند داد تا به او وفادار بماند. او همچنین بزرگان سرزمین را با خود برد،

¹⁴that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.

¹⁴ تا از شورش دوباره ملّت جلوگیری کند و مطمئن شود که به پیمان خود وفادارند.

¹⁵But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape who does such things? shall he break the covenant, and yet escape?

¹⁵ امّا پادشاه یهودا با فرستادن سفیران خود به مصر، به این امید که ایشان به او اسبها و ارتش بزرگی بدهند، شورش کرد. آیا او پیروز خواهد شد؟ آیا کسی می‌تواند با چنین کاری بگریزد؟ آیا او می‌تواند پیمان را بشکند و بدون مجازات بگریزد؟

¹⁶As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

¹⁶ «به حیات خودم سوگند، براستی این پادشاه در مکانی که پادشاه بابل او را پادشاه کرد، چون سوگند خود را خوار شمرد و پیمانش را شکست، در بابل خواهد مرد.

¹⁷Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts, to cut off many persons.

¹⁷ هنگامی‌که بابلیان سنگر درست کنند و شهر را محاصره نمایند تا مردم بسیاری را بکشند، حتّی فرعون و ارتش نیرومندش نیز نخواهند توانست به پادشاه یهودا کمک کنند.

¹⁸For he has despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet has done all these things; he shall not escape.

¹⁸ او سوگند و پیمان خود را شکست، او همهٔ این کارها را انجام داد و اکنون گریزی برای او نیست.»

¹⁹Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: As I live, surely my oath that he has despised, and my covenant that he has broken, I will even bring it on his own head.

¹⁹ خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: «به حیات خودم سوگند که او را به‌خاطر شکستن پیمان مجازات خواهم کرد، یعنی پیمانی که به نام من سوگند خورد.

²⁰I will spread my net on him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me.

²⁰ من تور خود را می‌گسترانم و او را در دام خواهم افکند. او را به بابل خواهم برد و به‌خاطر خیانتش علیه من او را در آنجا مجازات خواهم کرد.

²¹All his fugitives in all his bands shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered toward every wind: and you shall know that I, Yahweh, have spoken it.

²¹ همهٔ سپاهِ گریزانِ او با شمشیر کشته خواهند شد و بازماندگان ایشان در هر سو پراکنده می‌گردند. من خداوند گفته‌ام»

²²Thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain:

²² خداوند، خدا چنین می‌فرماید: «من شاخهٔ نازکی را از سر درخت سرو بلند خواهم شکست و آن را در قلّهٔ بلند کوه اسرائیل خواهم کاشت،

²³in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shade of its branches shall they dwell.

²³ تا شاخه‌ها از آن بروید و میوه آورد و درخت سرو با شکوهی گردد. در زیر آن، هرگونه پرنده زندگی خواهد کرد و در سایهٔ آن آشیانه خواهند ساخت. تمام درختان سرزمین خواهند دانست که من خداوند هستم. درختان بلند را برمی‌اندازم و درختان کوتاه را بلند می‌کنم. من درخت سبز را خشک می‌کنم و درخت خشک را شکوفا می‌سازم. من، خداوند چنین می‌گویم و آن را انجام خواهم داد.»

²⁴All the trees of the field shall know that I, Yahweh, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, Yahweh, have spoken and have done it.

²⁴ تمام درختان سرزمین خواهند دانست که من خداوند هستم. درختان بلند را برمی‌اندازم و درختان کوتاه را بلند می‌کنم. من درخت سبز را خشک می‌کنم و درخت خشک را شکوفا می‌سازم. من، خداوند چنین می‌گویم و آن را انجام خواهم داد.»
