¹The word of Yahweh came to me again, saying,

¹ خداوند به من فرمود:

²What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?

² «منظور شما از تکرار این مَثَل در مورد سرزمین اسرائیل چیست که می‌گویید: 'والدین غوره خوردند و دندان فرزندان کُند شد.'

³As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, you shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

³ «به حیات خودم سوگند که بعد از این، در اسرائیل کسی این ضرب‌المثل را به زبان نمی‌آورد.

⁴Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins, he shall die.

⁴ جان همه به من تعلّق دارد، پدر و پسر هر دو به من تعلّق دارند. تنها، کسی‌که گناه ورزد، خواهد مرد.

⁵But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right,

⁵ «اگر شخصی نیکوکار، عادل و صادق باشد،

⁶and has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither has defiled his neighbor’s wife, neither has come near to a woman in her impurity,

⁶ بالای کوهها برای پرستش بُتهای قوم اسرائیل نمی‌رود، از گوشت حیوانی که برای بُتها قربانی شده است نمی‌خورد، زن همسایهٔ خود را وسوسه نمی‌کند، با زنی که عادت ماهانه داشته باشد همبستر نمی‌شود،

⁷and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

⁷ ستم نمی‌کند، وام خود را می‌پردازد، دزدی نمی‌کند، نان خود را به گرسنگان می‌دهد و برهنگان را جامه می‌پوشاند،

⁸he who has not given forth on interest, neither has taken any increase, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man,

⁸ برای بهره وام نمی‌دهد، پلیدی نمی‌کند، دعاوی را عادلانه قضاوت می‌کند.

⁹has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, says the Lord Yahweh.

⁹ چنین شخصی از فرمانهای من پیروی می‌کند و قوانین مرا رعایت می‌نماید. او نیکوکار است و خواهد زیست.» خداوند متعال چنین می‌فرماید.

¹⁰If he fathers a son who is a robber, a shedder of blood, and who does any one of these things,

¹⁰ «امّا اگر مردی پسری ظالم و خونریز داشته باشد

¹¹and who does not any of those duties, but even has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbor’s wife,

¹¹ و دست به کارهایی بزند که پدرش هرگز دست نزده است، گوشت حیوانی را که برای بُتها قربانی شده باشد بخورد، زن همسایه را وسوسه کند،

¹²has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination,

¹² به نیازمندان ستم کند، دزدی نماید، وام خود را نپردازد، بت‌پرستی نماید و پلیدی کند، به پرستشگاه بُتها برود،

¹³has given forth on interest, and has taken increase; shall he then live? he shall not live: he has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him.

¹³ بهره و گرو بگیرد، آیا او زنده خواهد ماند؟ نه، زنده نخواهد ماند. او که چنین کارهای پلیدی را کرده است، براستی خواهد مرد و خونش به گردن خودش است.

¹⁴Now, behold, if he fathers a son, who sees all his father’s sins, which he has done, and fears, and does not such like;

¹⁴ «امّا اگر این مرد، پسری داشته باشد و گناهان پدر خود را ببیند و مانند او رفتار نکند،

¹⁵who has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, has not defiled his neighbor’s wife,

¹⁵ از گوشت حیوانی که برای بُتها قربانی شده باشد نخورد و بُتهای قوم اسرائیل را نپرستد، زن همسایه را وسوسه نکند،

¹⁶neither has wronged any, has not taken anything to pledge, neither has taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

¹⁶ به کسی بدی نکند، بزور گرویی نگیرد، دزدی نکند، بلکه نان خود را به گرسنه بدهد و برهنه را جامه بپوشاند،

¹⁷who has withdrawn his hand from the poor, who has not received interest nor increase, has executed my ordinances, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

¹⁷ پلیدی نکند و برای بهره، وام ندهد. او قوانین مرا مراعات ‌کند و از فرمانهای من پیروی کند، او به‌خاطر گناهان پدرش نخواهد مُرد، بلکه براستی خواهد زیست.

¹⁸As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity.

¹⁸ ولی پدرش به‌خاطر فریب دادن و دزدی از برادرانش و به سبب بدی کردن در میان قومش و به‌خاطر خطاهایش خواهد مرد.

¹⁹Yet you say, Why doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live.

¹⁹ «امّا شما می‌پرسید: 'چرا پسر به‌خاطر گناهان پدرش مجازات نمی‌شود؟' پاسخ این است که پسر آنچه را درست و نیکو بود، انجام داد. او قوانین مرا نگاه داشت و از آنها به دقّت پیروی کرد پس براستی زنده خواهد ماند.

²⁰The soul who sins, he shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

²⁰ فقط همان کسی‌که گناه می‌کند می‌میرد. فرزند به‌خاطر گناه پدر جزا نمی‌بیند و نه پدر به‌خاطر گناه فرزند مجازات می‌شود. شخص نیکوکار به‌خاطر کارهای نیک خودش پاداش می‌گیرد و شخص بدکار به کیفر گناه خودش می‌رسد.

²¹But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

²¹ «امّا اگر مردان شریر از همهٔ گناهانی که ورزیده بودند، بازگردند و همهٔ احکام مرا نگاه دارند و آنچه را مطابق قانون و نیک است انجام دهند، البتّه زنده خواهند ماند و نخواهند مرد.

²²None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live.

²² همهٔ گناهانشان بخشیده خواهد شد و زنده می‌مانند، زیرا ایشان به نیکویی عمل کرده‌اند.

²³Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked? says the Lord Yahweh; and not rather that he should return from his way, and live?

²³ آیا گمان می‌کنید که من از مردن شخص گناهکار خوشحال می‌شوم؟ به هیچ وجه! بلکه برعکس می‌خواهم از راه بدی که در پیش گرفته است بازگردد و زنده بماند.

²⁴But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die.

²⁴ «امّا هنگامی‌که راستکاران، کجروی کنند و خطا نمایند و کارهای زشتی را که از شریران سر می‌زند، انجام دهند، آیا ایشان زنده خواهند ماند؟ هیچ‌کدام از نیکویی‌های ایشان به یاد نخواهد آمد و به‌خاطر خیانتی که مرتکب شده‌اند و گناهانی که ورزیده‌اند، خواهند مرد.

²⁵Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not equal? Aren’t your ways unequal?

²⁵ «امّا شما می‌گویید: 'روش خداوند غیرعادلانه است؟' پس اینک بشنوید، ای قوم اسرائیل: آیا روش من غیرعادلانه است؟ آیا این روشهای شما نیست که غیرعادلانه است؟

²⁶When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies therein; in his iniquity that he has done shall he die.

²⁶ هنگامی‌که فرد نیکوکاری از انجام نیکی بازگردد و پلیدی کند و بمیرد، او به‌خاطر کارهای پلیدش می‌میرد.

²⁷Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

²⁷ امّا هنگامی‌که فرد پلیدی از گناه بپرهیزد و آنچه را راست و نیک است، انجام دهد او جان خود را نجات خواهد داد.

²⁸Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

²⁸ زیرا ایشان اندیشیده‌اند و از خطاهایی که مرتکب شده‌اند روی‌گردان شده‌اند، البتّه زنده خواهند ماند و نخواهند مرد.

²⁹Yet the house of Israel says, “The way of the Lord is not fair.” House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair?

²⁹ امّا شما، ای قوم اسرائیل می‌گویید: 'روش خداوند غیرعادلانه است.' ای قوم اسرائیل، آیا روشهای من غیرعادلانه است؟ آیا این روشهای شما نیست که غیرعادلانه می‌باشد؟

³⁰Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways, says the Lord Yahweh. Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

³⁰ «من، خداوند متعال می‌گویم: بنابراین ای قوم اسرائیل، من شما را مطابق کردارتان داوری خواهم کرد. توبه کنید و از گناهان خود بازگردید، در غیر این صورت گناه، شما را هلاک خواهد کرد.

³¹Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel?

³¹ از گناهانی که در برابر من مرتکب شده‌اید، دست بکشید و قلب و روح تازه برای خود فراهم آورید. ای قوم اسرائیل، چرا می‌خواهید بمیرید؟ زیرا خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: من از مرگ هیچ‌کس شاد نمی‌شوم، پس بازگردید و زنده بمانید.»

³²For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, says the Lord Yahweh: therefore turn yourselves, and live.

³² زیرا خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: من از مرگ هیچ‌کس شاد نمی‌شوم، پس بازگردید و زنده بمانید.»
