¹When the seventh month had come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.

¹ تا ماه هفتم، قوم اسرائیل همه در شهرهای خود ساکن شده بودند. آنگاه همه در شهر اورشلیم گرد آمدند

²Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak stood up with his brothers the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brothers, and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.

² و یشوع پسر یوصاداق و کاهنانی که با او کار می‌کردند و زرُبابل فرزند شالتیئیل همراه اقوام خود قربانگاه معبد بزرگ خدای اسرائیل را دوباره بنا کردند تا طبق دستورات نوشته شده در شریعت موسی، مرد خدا، برای سوزاندن هدایای سوختنی مورد استفاده قرار گیرد.

³In spite of their fear because of the peoples of the surrounding lands, they set the altar on its base; and they offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, even burnt offerings morning and evening.

³ اگرچه آنانی که از تبعید برگشته بودند، از ساکنان آن سرزمین می‌ترسیدند، با این حال آنها قربانگاه را در همان محل سابقش دوباره ساختند و بار دیگر به طور مرتب قربانی‌های صبح و شب را بر آن می‌گذرانیدند.

⁴They kept the feast of tents, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the ordinance, as the duty of every day required;

⁴ آنها عید خیمه‌ها را با رعایت مقرّرات مربوط به آن جشن گرفتند، و هر روز قربانی‌های مربوط به همان روز را تقدیم می‌کردند.

⁵and afterward the continual burnt offering, the offerings of the new moons, of all the set feasts of Yahweh that were consecrated, and of everyone who willingly offered a freewill offering to Yahweh.

⁵ علاوه برآن، آنان قربانی‎های منظّمی برای سوزاندن تقدیم می‎كردند و قربانی‎هایی نیز برای جشن ماه نو و سایر گردهمایی‎هایی كه در آن خدا مورد عبادت قرار می‎گرفت، تقدیم می‎كردند. همانند تمامی هدایای دیگر كه به طور داوطلبانه به خداوند تقدیم می‎شد.

⁶From the first day of the seventh month, they began to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh; but the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was not yet laid.

⁶ هر چند هنوز مردم بازسازی معبد بزرگ را شروع نکرده بودند، با وجود این در اولین روز ماه هفتم انجام مراسم قربانی‌های سوختنی را شروع کردند.

⁷They also gave money to the masons, and to the carpenters. They also gave food, drink, and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the grant that they had from Cyrus King of Persia.

⁷ مردم برای پرداخت دستمزد سنگتراشان و نجّاران پول دادند و همچنین غذا و آشامیدنی و روغن زیتون جمع کردند تا به شهرهای صور و صیدون فرستاده شود و در عوض آن، چوب درخت سرو آزاد از لبنان خریداری کرده و از طریق دریا به یافا بفرستند. تمام این اقدامات با موافقت کوروش، شاهنشاه پارس انجام پذیرفت.

⁸Now in the second year of their coming to God’s house at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all those who had come out of the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to have the oversight of the work of Yahweh’s house.

⁸ بنابراین در ماه دوم سالی که آنان به معبد بزرگ اورشلیم برگشتند، کار را شروع کردند. زرُبابل، یشوع، و بقیّهٔ هموطنان آنها، کاهنان و لاویان -‌در حقیقت همهٔ تبعیدشدگانی که به اورشلیم بازگشته بودند- با هم کار می‌کردند. همهٔ لاویان بیست ساله و بالاتر به سرپرستی کار بازسازی گماشته شدند.

⁹Then Jeshua stood with his sons and his brothers, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to have the oversight of the workmen in God’s house: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brothers the Levites.

⁹ یشوع لاوی و پسران او و اقوامش، قدمیئیل و پسرانش از خاندان هودويا مسئولیّت نظارت در بازسازی معبد بزرگ را به عهده گرفتند. (لاویان وابسته به خاندان حیناداد نیز به آنها کمک کردند.)

¹⁰When the builders laid the foundation of Yahweh’s temple, they set the priests in their clothing with trumpets, with the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise Yahweh, according to the directions of David king of Israel.

¹⁰ وقتی مردم مشغول بازسازی بنیاد معبد بزرگ شدند، کاهنان با رداهای خود درحالی‌که شیپوری به دست داشتند، و لاویان وابسته به خاندان آساف با سنجهای خود، در جای مخصوص ایستادند. آنها مطابق تعالیم داوود پادشاه به حمد و ثنای خداوند پرداختند.

¹¹They sang to one another in praising and giving thanks to Yahweh, “For he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever toward Israel.” All the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Yahweh, because the foundation of the house of Yahweh had been laid.

¹¹ آنها سرودهایی در حمد و ثنای خداوند می‌خواندند و این بندگردان را تکرار می‌کردند: «چه نیکوست خداوند، خدایی که محبّتش برای قوم اسرائیل ابدی است.» همه، تا می‌توانستند صدای خود را بلند می‌کردند و خدا را ستایش می‌کردند چون کار بازسازی بنیاد معبد بزرگ شروع شده بود.

¹²But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, the old men who had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice. Many also shouted aloud for joy,

¹² وقتی بنیاد معبد بزرگ گذارده شد، بسیاری از کاهنان و لاویان و سران خاندانها که معبد بزرگ قبلی را دیده بودند، شروع به گریه و شیون کردند. امّا بقیّهٔ حاضرین فریاد شوق و شادی سر دادند. هیچ‌کس نمی‌توانست فریادهای شادی را از صدای گریه تشخیص دهد، زیرا به‌حدی صدای جیغ و فریاد بلند بود که حتّی از فاصله بسیار دور نیز شنیده می‌شد.

¹³so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard far away.

¹³ هیچ‌کس نمی‌توانست فریادهای شادی را از صدای گریه تشخیص دهد، زیرا به‌حدی صدای جیغ و فریاد بلند بود که حتّی از فاصله بسیار دور نیز شنیده می‌شد.
