¹Then Darius the king made a decree, and search was made in the house of the archives, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon.

²There was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of Media, a scroll, and therein was thus written for a record:

² ا منظور شهر همدان فعلی می‌باشد. در استان ماد طوماری یافت شد که شامل متن زیر بود:

³In the first year of Cyrus the king, Cyrus the king made a decree: Concerning God’s house at Jerusalem, let the house be built, the place where they offer sacrifices, and let its foundations be strongly laid; its height sixty cubits, and its breadth sixty cubits;

³ «در اولین سال پادشاهی خود، کوروش شاهنشاه فرمان داد معبد بزرگ اورشلیم دوباره در همان جای سابقش، به صورت مکانی برای انجام قربانی‌ها بنا شود. ارتفاع معبد بزرگ باید سی متر و عرض آن نیز سی متر باشد.

⁴with three courses of great stones, and a course of new timber: and let the expenses be given out of the king’s house.

⁴ دیوارهای آن از سه جدار سنگ و یک جدار چوب -‌به عنوان روکش روی سنگها- ساخته شود. تمام مخارج ساختمان از خزانه‌داری سلطنتی پرداخت شود.

⁵Also let the gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, be restored, and brought again to the temple which is at Jerusalem, everyone to its place; and you shall put them in God’s house.

⁵ همچنین کلّیه ظروف طلا و نقره‌ای که نبوکدنصر از معبد بزرگ اورشلیم به بابل آورده بود، باید به جای خودشان در معبد بزرگ اورشلیم بازگردانیده شود.»

⁶Now therefore, Tattenai, governor beyond the River, Shetharbozenai, and your companions the Apharsachites, who are beyond the River, you must stay far from there.

⁶ آنگاه داریوش شاهنشاه جواب زیر را فرستاد: «به تتنای، استاندار غربی رود فرات، شِتَربوزنای و دستیاران شما در غرب فرات. «به معبد بزرگ نزدیک نشوید

⁷Leave the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in its place.

⁷ و در ساختن آن دخالت نکنید. اجازه بدهید فرماندار یهودیه و رهبران قوم یهود معبد بزرگ خدای خود را در مکان سابقش بسازند.

⁸Moreover I make a decree what you shall do to these elders of the Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the River, expenses be given with all diligence to these men, that they be not hindered.

⁸ من به این وسیله به شما دستور می‌دهم در بازسازی معبد بزرگ به آنها کمک کنید. کلّیه مخارج آنها باید فوراً از خزانهٔ سلطنتی از محل مالیاتهای دریافت شده از استان غربی رود فرات پرداخت شود تا وقفه‌ای در کار ساختمان پیش نیاید.

⁹That which they have need of, both young bulls, and rams, and lambs, for burnt offerings to the God of heaven; also wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the word of the priests who are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail;

⁹ هرچه کاهنان احتیاج دارند، هر روز بدون هیچ کوتاهی، در اختیار آنها قرار دهید: گوساله، قوچ، یا برّه برای گذراندن قربانی سوختنی به حضور خدای آسمان و یا گندم، نمک، شراب و روغن زیتون که از شما می‌خواهند به ایشان بدهید.

¹⁰that they may offer sacrifices of pleasant aroma to the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.

¹⁰ دلیل این کار این است که آنها بتوانند قربانی‌هایی بگذرانند که مقبول خدای آسمان باشد و برای من و فرزندان من برکت بطلبند.

¹¹Also I have made a decree, that whoever shall alter this word, let a beam be pulled out from his house, and let him be lifted up and fastened thereon; and let his house be made a dunghill for this:

¹¹ علاوه بر آن، فرمان می‌دهم هر که از این دستور سرپیچی کند یک تیر چوبی از سقف خانه‌اش کنده، نوک آن را تیز و به بدنش فرو کنند و خانه‌اش را نیز به زباله‌دانی تبدیل کنند.

¹²and the God who has caused his name to dwell there overthrow all kings and peoples who shall put forth their hand to alter the same, to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done with all diligence.

¹² همان خدایی که اورشلیم را برای پرستش خود برگزید، هر پادشاه یا هر ملّتی را که فرمان مرا نقض کند و بخواهد معبد بزرگ را ویران کند، محو و نابود خواهد ساخت. من، داریوش، این دستور را داده‌ام. دستور من باید کاملاً اجرا شود.»

¹³Then Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, Shetharbozenai, and their companions, because Darius the king had sent a decree, did accordingly with all diligence.

¹³ آنگاه تتنای استاندار، شِتَربوزنای و بقیّهٔ همکارانشان هرچه را داریوش شاهنشاه دستور داده بود به طور دقیق انجام دادند.

¹⁴The elders of the Jews built and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. They built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the decree of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

¹⁴ رهبران قوم یهود با تشویقِ حَجّای و زکریای نبی پیشرفت خوبی در کار ساختن معبد بزرگ به دست آوردند. آنها طبق دستور خدای اسرائیل و فرمان کوروش، داریوش و اردشیر، پادشاهان پارس، ساختمان معبد بزرگ را به اتمام رسانیدند.

¹⁵This house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

¹⁵ آنها در روز سوم ماه ادار و در ششمین سال سلطنت داریوش شاهنشاه کار ساختمان معبد بزرگ را به اتمام رسانیدند.

¹⁶The children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy.

¹⁶ آنگاه قوم اسرائیل -‌کاهنان، لاویان و همهٔ آنانی که از تبعید برگشته بودند- با شادمانی معبد بزرگ را تقدیس کردند.

¹⁷They offered at the dedication of this house of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.

¹⁷ برای مراسم تقدیس معبد بزرگ، آنها صد گاو نر، دویست قوچ و چهارصد برّه قربانی کردند. علاوه بر آن دوازده بُز برای آمرزش گناه -‌یک بُز برای هر طایفهٔ اسرائیل- قربانی کردند.

¹⁸They set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.

¹⁸ آنها همچنین کاهنان و لاویان را برای خدمات معبد بزرگ اورشلیم، برحسب آنچه در کتاب موسی آمده است تعیین نمودند.

¹⁹The children of the captivity kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

¹⁹ کسانی‌که از تبعید برگشته بودند عید فصح را در روز چهاردهم ماه اول سال بعد جشن گرفتند.

²⁰For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; all of them were pure: and they killed the Passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brothers the priests, and for themselves.

²⁰ همهٔ کاهنان و لاویان خود را تطهیر کرده و پاک بودند. لاویان از طرف همهٔ مردمی که از تبعید برگشته بودند و همچنین از طرف کاهنان و از طرف خود قربانی‌ها را برای مراسم عید فصح ذبح کردند.

²¹The children of Israel who had come again out of the captivity, and all such as had separated themselves to them from the filthiness of the nations of the land, to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, ate,

²¹ همهٔ قوم اسرائیل که از تبعید برگشته بودند و تمام آنهایی که از چیزهای ناپاک غیریهودیان ساکن آن سرزمین دست برداشته به پرستش خداوند، خدای اسرائیل روی آورده بودند از گوشت قربانی‌ها خوردند. آ امپراتور آشور ظاهراً اشاره‌ای است به شاهنشاه پارس. وی بر سرزمینی که قبلاً توسط سوریه، دشمن دیرینهٔ اسرائیل تسخیر شده بود، حکمرانی می‌کرد. قرار داده بود و از این رو در بازسازی معبد بزرگ خدای اسرائیل از حمایت او برخوردار بودند.

²²and kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for Yahweh had made them joyful, and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, to strengthen their hands in the work of God’s house, the God of Israel.

²² آ امپراتور آشور ظاهراً اشاره‌ای است به شاهنشاه پارس. وی بر سرزمینی که قبلاً توسط سوریه، دشمن دیرینهٔ اسرائیل تسخیر شده بود، حکمرانی می‌کرد. قرار داده بود و از این رو در بازسازی معبد بزرگ خدای اسرائیل از حمایت او برخوردار بودند.
