¹Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

¹ چندین سال بعد، در دوران شاهنشاهی اردشیر شاهنشاه پارس، شخصی بود به نام عزرا. او به این شکل شجره‌نامهٔ خود را به هارون که کاهن اعظم بود می‌رساند: عزرا پسر سرایا، پسر عزریا، پسر حلقیا،

²the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

² پسر شلوم، پسر صادوق، پسر اخیطوب،

³the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

³ پسر امریا، پسر عزریا، پسر مرایوت،

⁴the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

⁴ پسر زرحیا، پسر عزی، پسر بقی،

⁵the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest;

⁵ پسر ابیشوع، پسر فینحاس، پسر العازار، پسر هارون.

⁶this Ezra went up from Babylon: and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which Yahweh, the God of Israel, had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of Yahweh his God on him.

⁶ عزرا شخصی بود فاضل و دارای دانش عمیق در شریعت، که خداوند، خدای اسرائیل به موسی داده بود. چون عزرا از برکت خداوند خدای خود، برخوردار بود، شاهنشاه هرآنچه را که او در‌خواست می‌کرد به او می‌داد. در هفتمین سال سلطنت اردشیر، عزرا به اتّفاق گروهی از یهودیان که شامل کاهنان، لاویان، سرایندگان، نگهبانان و خادمان معبد بزرگ بود، از بابل عازم اورشلیم شد.

⁷There went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinim, to Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

⁷ آنها در اولین روز ماه اول، بابل را ترک کردند و با یاری خدا در روز اول ماه پنجم وارد اورشلیم شدند.

⁸He came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.

⁸ عزرا تمام زندگی خود را در مطالعه شریعت خداوند، اجرای آن و تعلیم تمام دستورهای آن به مردم اسرائیل صرف کرده بود.

⁹For on the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon; and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God on him.

⁹ اردشیر شاهنشاه مدرک زیر را به عزرا، کاهنِ فاضل که دانشی عمیق از قوانین و دستورهای الهی داشت، داد:

¹⁰For Ezra had set his heart to seek the law of Yahweh, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and ordinances.

¹⁰ «از طرف اردشیر شاهنشاه به عزرای کاهن، فاضل در شریعت خدای آسمان.

¹¹Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, even the scribe of the words of the commandments of Yahweh, and of his statutes to Israel:

¹¹ «من فرمان می‌دهم در سرتاسر امپراتوری من به تمام قوم اسرائیل، کاهنان و لاویانی که مایل هستند، اجازه داده شود به همراه تو به اورشلیم برگردند.

¹²Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect and so forth.

¹² من، به اتّفاق هفت مشاور خود، به تو مأموریت می‌دهیم به اورشلیم و یهودیه بروی و وضع آنها را بررسی کنی و ببینی آیا شریعت خدایت که به تو سپرده شده است اطاعت می‌شود یا نه.

¹³I make a decree, that all those of the people of Israel, and their priests and the Levites, in my realm, who are minded of their own free will to go to Jerusalem, go with you.

¹³ تو باید هدایای طلا و نقره‌‌‌ای را که من و مشاورینم مایلیم به خدای اسرائیل که معبد بزرگ او در اورشلیم است تقدیم کنیم، با خود ببری.

¹⁴Because you are sent of the king and his seven counselors, to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of your God which is in your hand,

¹⁴ تو همچنین باید تمام طلا و نقره‌‌‌ای را که در سراسر استان بابل جمع می‌کنی و هدایایی را که قوم اسرائیل و کاهنان آنها برای معبد بزرگ خدای خود در اورشلیم می‌دهند، با خود ببری.

¹⁵and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,

¹⁵ «تو باید با دقّت آنها را صرف خرید گاوهای‌ نر، قوچها، برّه‌ها، غلاّت و شراب بکنی و آنها را بر قربانگاه معبد بزرگ اورشلیم تقدیم کنی.

¹⁶and all the silver and gold that you shall find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;

¹⁶ تو می‌توانی آنچه را که از طلا و نقره باقی می‌ماند مطابق ارادهٔ خدای خود برای تهیّه هرچه خودت و مردمت می‌خواهید صرف کنی.

¹⁷therefore you shall with all diligence buy with this money bulls, rams, lambs, with their meal offerings and their drink offerings, and shall offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.

¹⁷ تو باید تمام ظروفی را که برای استفاده در خدمات معبد بزرگ به تو داده شده در اورشلیم به خدا تقدیم کنی.

¹⁸Whatever shall seem good to you and to your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, do that after the will of your God.

¹⁸ و هر چیز دیگری که برای معبد بزرگ نیاز داری، می‌توانی از خزانهٔ سلطنتی بگیری.

¹⁹The vessels that are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver before the God of Jerusalem.

¹⁹ «من به تمام خزانه‌داران استان غربی رود فرات دستور می‌دهم هرچه عزرای کاهن و فاضل در شریعت خدای آسمان می‌خواهد، تهیه کنند.

²⁰Whatever more shall be needful for the house of your God, which you shall have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king’s treasure house.

²⁰ یعنی تا سه هزار و چهارصد کیلو نقره، ده هزار کیلوگرم گندم، دو هزار لیتر شراب، دو هزار لیتر روغن زیتون، و هراندازه نمک که بخواهد.

²¹I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers who are beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done with all diligence,

²¹ باید در تهیهٔ هرچه خدای آسمان برای معبد بزرگ خود می‌خواهد، دقیق باشید و مطمئن شوید که او هرگز از من و کسانی‌که بعد از من حکومت می‌کنند، خشمگین نشود.

²²to one hundred talents of silver, and to one hundred measures of wheat, and to one hundred baths of wine, and to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.

²² شما را از گرفتن هر نوع مالیات از کاهنان، لاویان، سرایندگان، نگهبانان، خادمان و هر که به معبد بزرگ وابسته است، منع می‌کنم.

²³Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done exactly for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?

²³ «تو ای عزرا، با حکمتی که خدا به تو داده است، می‌باید مدیران و داورانی را که طبق شریعت خدای تو زندگی می‌کنند برای حکومت بر تمام مردم استان غربی رود فرات، انتخاب کنی. تو باید آن شریعت را به هر که نمی‌داند بیاموزی.

²⁴Also we inform you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, the singers, porters, Nethinim, or servants of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll, on them.

²⁴ اگر کسی شریعت خدای تو یا قوانین شاهنشاه را اطاعت نکند، باید فوراً به مجازات برسد. مجازات چنین فردی ممکن است مرگ، تبعید، مصادرهٔ اموال یا زندان باشد.»

²⁵You, Ezra, after the wisdom of your God who is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges, who may judge all the people who are beyond the River, all such as know the laws of your God; and teach him who doesn’t know them.

²⁵ عزرا گفت: «سپاس بر نام خداوند، خدای اجداد ما باد! او شاهنشاه را تشویق کرد، چنین حرمتی به معبد بزرگ خداوند در اورشلیم بگذارد. به‌خاطر محبّت پایدار خدا، من مورد توجّه شاهنشاه و مشاورینش و تمام مأموران عالی رتبهٔ او قرار گرفته‌ام. خداوند، خدایم، به من شهامت بخشیده است و من توانسته‌ام بسیاری از سران خاندانهای قوم اسرائیل را تشویق کنم، همراه من بازگردند.»

²⁶Whoever will not do the law of your God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed on him with all diligence, whether it be to death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.

²⁶ به‌خاطر محبّت پایدار خدا، من مورد توجّه شاهنشاه و مشاورینش و تمام مأموران عالی رتبهٔ او قرار گرفته‌ام. خداوند، خدایم، به من شهامت بخشیده است و من توانسته‌ام بسیاری از سران خاندانهای قوم اسرائیل را تشویق کنم، همراه من بازگردند.»

²⁷Blessed be Yahweh, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of Yahweh which is in Jerusalem;

²⁸and has extended loving kindness to me before the king, and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. I was strengthened according to the hand of Yahweh my God on me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
