1Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Get out of your country, and from your relatives, and from your father’s house, to the land that I will show you.

خداوند به اَبرام فرمود: «وطن خود، بستگانت و خانهٔ پدری خود را ترک كن و به طرف سرزمینی كه به تو نشان میدهم برو.
2I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.
2
من به تو قومی كثیر خواهم داد و آنان ملّتی بزرگ خواهند شد. من تو را بركت خواهم داد و نام تو مشهور و معروف خواهد شد، لذا تو خودت مایهٔ بركت خواهی بود.
3I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you. All of the families of the earth will be blessed in you.”

«به کسانیکه تو را بركت دهند، بركت خواهم داد.
امّا به کسانیکه تو را لعنت كنند، لعنت خواهم كرد،
و به وسیلهٔ تو همهٔ ملّتها را بركت خواهم داد.»
4So Abram went, as Yahweh had spoken to him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed out of Haran.

همانطور كه خداوند فرموده بود، هنگامی كه اَبرام هفتاد و پنج سال داشت از حرّان خارج شد. لوط هم همراه او بود.
5Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls whom they had gotten in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. Into the land of Canaan they came.

اَبرام زن خود سارای و لوط-پسر برادرش- و تمام دارایی و غلامانی را كه در حرّان به دست آورده بود، با خود برد و آنها به طرف سرزمین كنعان حركت كردند.
وقتی آنها به سرزمین كنعان رسیدند،
6Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. The Canaanite was then in the land.

اَبرام در آنجا گشت تا به درخت مقدّس موره در زمین شكیم رسید. (در آن موقع كنعانیان هنوز در آن سرزمین زندگی میكردند.)
7Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your seed or, offspring .” He built an altar there to Yahweh, who appeared to him.

خداوند به اَبرام ظاهر شد و به او فرمود: «این سرزمینی است كه من به نسل تو میدهم.» پس اَبرام در آنجا كه خداوند خود را بر او ظاهر كرده بود، قربانگاهی بنا كرد.
8He left from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and called on the name of Yahweh.

بعد از آن او حركت کرده به طرف تپّههای شرقی شهر بیتئیل رفت و اردوی خود را بین بیتئیل در مغرب و عای در مشرق بنا كرد. در آنجا نیز قربانگاهی برای خداوند بنا كرد و خداوند را پرستش نمود.
9Abram traveled, going on still toward the South.

او دوباره از آنجا به جای دیگر كوچ كرد و به جنوب كنعان رفت.
10There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to live as a foreigner there, for the famine was severe in the land.

امّا در كنعان قحطی بسیار شدیدی شده بود. به همین علّت، اَبرام باز هم به طرف جنوب رفت تا به مصر رسید تا برای مدّتی در آنجا زندگی كند.
11It happened, when he had come near to enter Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at.

وقتی به مرز مصر رسیدند، اَبرام به زن خود سارای گفت: «میدانم كه تو زن زیبایی هستی،
12It will happen, when the Egyptians will see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive.

پس، وقتی مصریان تو را با من ببینند و بفهمند كه تو همسر من هستی، به همین دلیل مرا میكشند و تو را زنده نگاه میدارند.
13Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you.”

پس به آنها بگو كه تو خواهر من هستی تا بهخاطر تو مرا نكشند و با من به خوبی رفتار كنند.»
14It happened that when Abram had come into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

وقتی اَبرام از مرز گذشته به مصر داخل شد، مصریان دیدند كه همسر او زیباست.
15The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

بعضی از درباریان سارای را دیده و از زیبایی او به فرعون خبر دادند، پس او را به کاخ فرعون بردند.
16He dealt well with Abram for her sake. He had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

پادشاه به خاطر سارای، با اَبرام بسیار خوب رفتار كرد و به او گلّههای گوسفند و بُز و گاو و الاغ و شتر و غلامان زیادی بخشید.
17Yahweh plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

امّا به خاطر اینكه فرعون، سارای -زن اَبرام- را گرفته بود، خداوند بلاهایی سخت بر او و بر كسانیكه در دربار او بودند، فرستاد.
18Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife?

پس فرعون به دنبال اَبرام فرستاد و از او پرسید: «این چه كاری بود كه كردی؟ چرا به من نگفتی كه این زن همسر توست؟
19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way.”

چرا گفتی كه او خواهر توست و گذاشتی من او را به همسری خود بگیرم؟ این زن توست، او را بردار و از اینجا برو.»
فرعون به نوكران خود دستور داد و آنها اَبرام را با زنش و هرچه داشت برده از مصر بیرون كردند.
20Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they brought him on the way with his wife and all that he had.
