1The whole earth was of one language and of one speech.

در آن زمان مردم سراسر جهان فقط یک زبان داشتند و كلمات آنها یكی بود.
2It happened, as they traveled east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they lived there.

وقتیکه از مشرق كوچ میكردند، به دشت همواری در سرزمین شنعار رسیدند و در آنجا ساكن شدند.
3They said one to another, “Come, let’s make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

آنها به یكدیگر گفتند: «بیایید خشت بزنیم و آنها را خوب بپزیم.» آنها به جای سنگ، آجر، و به جای گچ، قیر داشتند.
4They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”

پس به یكدیگر گفتند: «بیایید شهری برای خود بسازیم و بُرجی بنا كنیم كه سرش به آسمان برسد و به این وسیله نام خود را مشهور بسازیم. مبادا در روی زمین پراكنده شویم.»
5Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.

بعد از آن، خداوند پایین آمد تا شهر و بُرجی را كه آن مردم ساخته بودند، ببیند.
6Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do.

آنگاه فرمود: «حال دیگر تمام این مردم، یكی هستند و زبانشان هم یكی است. این تازه اول كار آنهاست و هیچ كاری نیست كه انجام آن برای آنها غیر ممكن باشد.
7Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

پس پایین برویم و وحدت زبان آنها را از بین ببریم تا زبان یكدیگر را نفهمند.»
8So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.

پس خداوند آنها را در سراسر روی زمین پراكنده كرد و آنها نتوانستند آن شهر را بسازند.
9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.

اسم آن شهر را بابل گذاشتند، چونكه خداوند در آنجا وحدت زبان تمام مردم را از بین برد و آنها را در سراسر روی زمین پراكنده كرد.
10This is the history of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood.

اینها فرزندان سام بودند: دو سال بعد از توفان، وقتی كه سام صد ساله بود، پسرش ارفكشاد به دنیا آمد.
11Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن پانصد سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
12Arpachshad lived thirty-five years and became the father of Shelah.

وقتی ارفكشاد سی و پنج ساله بود، پسرش شالح به دنیا آمد.
13Arpachshad lived four hundred three years after he became the father of Shelah, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن چهارصد و سه سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
14Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber:

وقتی شالح سی ساله بود، پسرش عابر به دنیا آمد.
15and Shelah lived four hundred three years after he became the father of Eber, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن چهارصد و سه سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
16Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg.

وقتی عابر سی و چهار ساله بود، پسرش فالج به دنیا آمد.
17Eber lived four hundred thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن چهارصد و سی سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
18Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu.

وقتی فالج سی ساله بود، پسرش رعو به دنیا آمد.
19Peleg lived two hundred nine years after he became the father of Reu, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن دویست و نه سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
20Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug.

وقتی رعو سی و دو ساله بود، پسرش سروج به دنیا آمد.
21Reu lived two hundred seven years after he became the father of Serug, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن دویست و هفت سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
22Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor.

وقتی سروج سی ساله بود، پسرش ناحور به دنیا آمد.
23Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن دویست سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
24Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah.

وقتی ناحور بیست و نه ساله بود، پسرش تارح به دنیا آمد.
25Nahor lived one hundred nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and became the father of sons and daughters.

بعد از آن صد و نوزده سال دیگر زندگی كرد و دارای پسران و دختران دیگر شد.
26Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

بعد از اینکه تارح هفتاد ساله شد، پسران او اَبرام، ناحور و هاران به دنیا آمدند.
27Now this is the history of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran became the father of Lot.

اینها فرزندان تارح هستند: تارح پدر اَبرام، ناحور و هاران بود و هاران پدر لوط بود.
28Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.

هاران در زادگاه خود در اوركلدانیان -هنگامی كه هنوز پدرش زنده بود- مرد.
29Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran who was also the father of Iscah.

اَبرام با سارای ازدواج كرد و ناحور با مِلكَه دختر هاران ازدواج نمود. هاران پدر یسكه هم بود.
30Sarai was barren. She had no child.

امّا سارای نازا بود و فرزندی به دنیا نیاورد.
31Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife. They went from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran and lived there.

تارح، پسرش اَبرام و نوهاش لوط پسر هاران و عروسش سارای زن اَبرام را برداشت و با آنها از اور كلدانیان به طرف سرزمین كنعان بیرون رفت. آنها رفتند تا به حرّان رسیدند و در آنجا اقامت كردند.
تارح در آنجا در سن دویست و پنج سالگی مرد.
32The days of Terah were two hundred five years. Terah died in Haran.
