1Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?”

وقتی یعقوب فهمید كه در مصر غلّه وجود دارد، به پسرانش گفت: «چرا دست روی دست گذاشتهاید؟
2He said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die.”
2
من شنیدهام كه در مصر غلّه هست. به آنجا بروید و غلّه بخرید تا از گرسنگی هلاک نشویم.»
3Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.
3
پس ده برادر ناتنی یوسف برای خرید غلّه به مصر رفتند.
4But Jacob didn’t send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps harm happen to him.”
4
امّا یعقوب بنیامین را كه برادر تنی یوسف بود با آنها نفرستاد. چون ترسید بلایی به سرش بیاید.
5The sons of Israel came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
5
پسران یعقوب به اتّفاق عدّهای دیگر برای خرید غلّه به مصر آمدند. زیرا در تمام سرزمین كنعان قحطی بود.
6Joseph was the governor over the land. It was he who sold to all the people of the land. Joseph’s brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the earth.

یوسف نخستوزیر مصر بود و غلّه را به تمام كسانیكه از سراسر دنیا میآمدند، میفروخت. پس برادران یوسف آمدند و در مقابل او سجده كردند.
7Joseph saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, “Where did you come from?” They said, “From the land of Canaan to buy food.”

وقتی یوسف برادران خود را دید آنها را شناخت. امّا طوری رفتار كرد كه گویی آنها را نمیشناسد. یوسف با خشونت از آنها پرسید: «شما از كجا آمدهاید؟»
آنها جواب دادند: «ما از كنعان آمدهایم تا آذوقه بخریم.»
8Joseph recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him.

یوسف برادران خود را شناخت ولی آنها یوسف را نشناختند.
9Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land.”
9
یوسف خوابی را كه دربارهٔ آنها دیده بود، به یاد آورد و به آنها گفت: «شما جاسوس هستید و آمدهاید تا از ضعف كشور ما آگاه شوید.»
10They said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.
10
آنها گفتند: «نه، ای آقا، ما مثل غلامان تو برای خرید آذوقه آمدهایم.
11We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men. Your servants are not spies.”
11
ما همه برادریم، ما جاسوس نیستیم بلكه مردمان امین و راستگویی هستیم.»
12He said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land!”
12
یوسف به آنها گفت: «نه شما آمدهاید تا از ضعف كشور ما آگاه شوید.»
13They said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.”
13
آنها گفتند: «ای آقا، ما دوازده برادر بودیم. همه فرزندان یک مرد در سرزمین کنعان. یكی از برادران ما اكنون نزد پدرمان است و یكی هم مرده است.»
14Joseph said to them, “It is like I told you, saying, ‘You are spies!’
14
یوسف گفت: «به همین جهت است كه گفتم، شما جاسوس هستید.
15By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from here, unless your youngest brother comes here.
15
حالا شما را اینطور امتحان میكنم: به جان فرعون قسم كه تا برادر كوچک شما به اینجا نیاید شما را آزاد نخواهم كرد.
16Send one of you, and let him get your brother, and you shall be bound, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you, or else by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies.”

یكی از شما برود و او را بیاورد. بقیّهٔ شما هم اینجا زندانی خواهید شد تا درستی حرف شما ثابت شود. در غیر این صورت، به جان فرعون قسم میخورم كه شما جاسوس هستید.»
17He put them all together into custody for three days.
17
سپس آنها را مدّت سه روز در زندان انداخت.
18Joseph said to them the third day, “Do this, and live, for I fear God.
18
روز سوم یوسف به آنها گفت: «من مرد خداترسی هستم. شما را به یک شرط آزاد میكنم.
19If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison; but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses.
19
اگر شما راست میگویید یكی از شما اینجا در همین زندان بماند و بقیّهٔ شما با غلّهای كه برای رفع گرسنگی خانوادهٔ خود خریدهاید، بازگردید.
20Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.” They did so.
20
سپس شما باید برادر كوچک خود را نزد من بیاورید تا حرفهای شما ثابت شود و من شما را هلاک نكنم.»
آنها با این پیشنهاد موافقت كردند
21They said one to another, “We are certainly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.”

و به یكدیگر گفتند: «ما حالا در نتیجهٔ كاری كه با برادر خود كردیم مجازات میشویم. چگونه از روی ناراحتی به ما التماس میكرد و ما گوش ندادیم، بهخاطر همین است كه ما اكنون دچار چنین زحمتی شدهایم.»
22Reuben answered them, saying, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘Don’t sin against the child,’ and you wouldn’t listen? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.”

رئوبین گفت: «من به شما گفتم كه آن پسر را اذیّت نكنید. ولی شما گوش ندادید و حالا بهخاطر مرگ او مجازات میشویم.»
23They didn’t know that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them.
23
یوسف فهمید كه آنها چه میگویند ولی آنها این را نمیدانستند، زیرا به وسیلهٔ مترجم با او صحبت میكردند.
24He turned himself away from them, and wept. Then he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
24
یوسف از پیش آنها رفت و شروع كرد به گریه كردن و بعد دوباره پیش آنها برگشت و با آنها صحبت كرد. سپس شمعون را گرفت و در مقابل آنها دست و پای او را بست.
25Then Joseph gave a command to fill their bags with grain, and to restore each man’s money into his sack, and to give them food for the way. So it was done to them.

یوسف دستور داد تا كیسههای برادرانش را پُر از غلّه كنند. پول هركس را در كیسهاش بگذارند و توشهٔ سفر به هركس بدهند. این دستور انجام شد.
26They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there.
26
سپس برادرانش كیسههای غلّه را بر الاغهای خود بار كردند و به راه افتادند.
27As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
27
در جاییکه شب را منزل كرده بودند، یكی از آنها كیسهٔ خود را باز كرد تا به الاغش غذا بدهد. امّا دید كه پولش در درون كیسهٔ اوست.
28He said to his brothers, “My money is restored! Behold, it is in my sack!” Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?”

پس به برادرانش گفت: «پول من به من پس داده شده و الآن در كیسهٔ من است.» همه دلهایشان فرو ریخت و از ترس از یكدیگر میپرسیدند: «این چهكاری است كه خدا با ما كرده است؟»
29They came to Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and told him all that had happened to them, saying,

وقتی در كنعان به نزد پدرشان رسیدند، هرچه برایشان اتّفاق افتاده بود برای او تعریف كردند
30“The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.
30
و گفتند: «نخستوزیر با خشونت با ما صحبت كرد و خیال كرد كه ما برای جاسوسی به آنجا رفته بودیم.
31We said to him, ‘We are honest men. We are no spies.
31
ما جواب دادیم كه ما جاسوس نیستیم، بلکه مردمان درستكاری هستیم.
32We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’
32
ما دوازده برادر بودیم همه فرزند یک پدر. یكی از برادران ما مرده است و برادر كوچكمان هم الآن پیش پدرمان است.»
33The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way.

آن مرد جواب داد: «به این طریق میفهمم كه شما مردمان درستكاری هستید: یک نفر از شما نزد من بماند و بقیّه برای رفع گرسنگی خانوادهٔ خود غلّه بگیرید و بروید.
34Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. So I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’”

سپس برادر كوچک خود را به نزد من بیاورید. آن وقت خواهم دانست كه شما جاسوس نیستید. بلكه مردمان درستكاری هستید و برادر شما را به شما پس میدهم. آن وقت شما میتوانید در اینجا بمانید و داد و ستد كنید.»
35It happened as they emptied their sacks, that behold, each man’s bundle of money was in his sack. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.

وقتی آنها كیسههای خود را خالی میكردند، هركس پولش را در كیسهٔ خودش پیدا كرد. وقتی پولها را دیدند، آنها و پدرشان ترسیدند.
36Jacob, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me.”

پدرشان به آنها گفت: «آیا شما میخواهید كه من همهٔ فرزندانم را از دست بدهم؟ یوسف دیگر نیست، شمعون هم نیست و حالا میخواهید بنیامین را هم ببرید. همهٔ اینها به سر من آمده است!»
37Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons, if I don’t bring him to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him to you again.”
37
رئوبین به پدرش گفت: «اگر من بنیامین را برنگردانم، تو میتوانی هر دو پسر مرا بكشی. تو او را به من بسپار، من خودم او را برمیگردانم.»
امّا یعقوب گفت: «پسر من نمیتواند با شما بیاید. برادر او مرده و او تنها مانده است. ممكن است در راه اتّفاقی برای او بیفتد. من یک پیرمرد هستم و این غم مرا خواهد كشت.»
38He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol Sheol is the place of the dead. .”

امّا یعقوب گفت: «پسر من نمیتواند با شما بیاید. برادر او مرده و او تنها مانده است. ممكن است در راه اتّفاقی برای او بیفتد. من یک پیرمرد هستم و این غم مرا خواهد كشت.»
