¹The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when king Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,

¹ صدقیا پادشاه یهودا، فشجور پسر ملیکا و صَفَنیای کاهن پسر معسیا را به نزد من فرستادند. آنها از من خواهش کرده گفتند:

²Please inquire of Yahweh for us; for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us: perhaps Yahweh will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

² «خواهش می‌کنیم از طرف ما به خداوند بگو که نبوکدنصر پادشاه بابل و ارتش او شهر را محاصره کرده‌اند. شاید خداوند مانند گذشته با یکی از معجزات خود مانند پیشین نبوکدنصر را مجبور به عقب‌نشینی کند.»

³Then Jeremiah said to them, You shall tell Zedekiah:

³ آنگاه خداوند از من خواست تا به قاصدین بگویم

⁴Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you, without the walls; and I will gather them into the midst of this city.

⁴ که به صدقیا بگویند، خداوند، خدای اسرائیل چنین گفته است: «ای صدقیا، من ارتش تو را که برضد پادشاه بابل و ارتش او می‌جنگد، شکست خواهم داد. من تمامی سلاحهای سربازان تو را در مرکز شهر انباشته خواهم کرد.

⁵I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation.

⁵ من با تمام قدرت و با شدّت خشم و غضب خود علیه تو خواهم جنگید.

⁶I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and animal: they shall die of a great pestilence.

⁶ من تمام زندگان را در این شهر خواهم کُشت. تمام مردم و حیوانات را هم با بیماری وحشتناکی خواهم کشت.

⁷Afterward, says Yahweh, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, even such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life: and he shall strike them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

⁷ امّا در مورد تو و درباریان و مردمی که از جنگ و قحطی و بیماری جان سالم به در می‌برند، اجازه خواهم داد تا نبوکدنصر و دشمنانتان که قصد جان شما را دارند، همهٔ شما را به اسارت ببرند. نبوکدنصر شما را خواهد کُشت. او بدون ترحّم و دلسوزی همه را از دَم تیغ خواهد گذرانید. من خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

⁸To this people you shall say, Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

⁸ آنگاه خداوند از من خواست به مردم بگویم: «گوش کنید، من خداوند، فرصت انتخاب به شما می‌دهم. می‌توانید راهی را انتخاب کنید که منتهی به حیات است یا راهی را که به سوی موت و هلاکت می‌رود.

⁹He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes out, and passes over to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey.

⁹ هرکس که در شهر بماند به وسیلهٔ جنگ یا گرسنگی یا بیماری کشته خواهد شد. امّا هرکس که تسلیم به بابلی‌‌هایی که در حال حمله به شهر هستند شود، کشته نخواهد شد؛ بلکه جان خود را نجات خواهد داد.

¹⁰For I have set my face on this city for evil, and not for good, says Yahweh: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

¹⁰ تصمیم من این است که این شهر را ویران کنم. این شهر در اختیار پادشاه بابل قرار خواهد گرفت و او آن را به آتش خواهد کشید. من خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

¹¹Touching the house of the king of Judah, hear the word of Yahweh:

¹¹ خداوند از من خواست به خاندان سلطنتی یهودا که از نسل داوود هستند بگویم: «به آنچه من، خداوند می‌گویم گوش کنید. انصاف را همیشه رعایت نموده و فریب خورده را از دست فریبکار برهانید. اگر چنین نکنید شرارت شما خشم مرا مثل آتشی که هیچ‌وقت خاموش نمی‌شود، شعله‌ور خواهد ساخت.

¹²House of David, thus says Yahweh, Execute justice in the morning, and deliver him who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

¹² تو ای اورشلیم که بر فراز دشت مثل صخره‌ای بلند برافراشته‌ای، من برضد تو خواهم جنگید. تو می‌گویی کسی قادر نیست به تو حمله کند یا از استحکامات دفاعی تو رد شود. امّا من تو را به‌خاطر شرارتت مجازات خواهم کرد. من کاخ تو را به آتش می‌کشم و در اطراف آن ‌همه‌چیز را می‌سوزانم. من خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

¹³Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and of the rock of the plain, says Yahweh; you that say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

¹³ امّا من تو را به‌خاطر شرارتت مجازات خواهم کرد. من کاخ تو را به آتش می‌کشم و در اطراف آن ‌همه‌چیز را می‌سوزانم. من خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

¹⁴I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, says Yahweh; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is around her.
