¹Now it happened in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal and one of the chief officers of the king, and ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they ate bread together in Mizpah.

¹ در هفتمین ماه همان سال، اسماعیل پسر نتنیا و نوهٔ الیشمع، که یکی از اعضای خانوادهٔ سلطنتی و یکی از افسران ارشد پادشاه بود، به همراه ده نفر به مصفه رفت تا با جدلیای فرماندار دیدار کند. وقتی آنها با هم مشغول صرف غذا بودند،

²Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men who were with him, and struck Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and killed him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

² اسماعیل و ده مرد همراه او شمشیرهای خود را کشیدند و جدلیا را کشتند؛ زیرا پادشاه بابل او را به فرمانداری یهودا برگزیده بود.

³Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with him, with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.

³ اسماعیل همچنین تمام یهودیانی را که با جدلیا در مصفه بودند و سربازان بابلی را که هنوز در آنجا حضور داشتند، همه را کشت.

⁴It happened the second day after he had killed Gedaliah, and no man knew it,

⁴ روز بعد، قبل از آنکه کسی از قتل جدلیا باخبر شود،

⁵that there came men from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even eighty men, having their beards shaved and their clothes torn, and having cut themselves, with meal offerings and frankincense in their hand, to bring them to the house of Yahweh.

⁵ هشتاد نفر از شکیم، سیلو و سامره آمدند. آنها ریشهای خود را تراشیده بودند، لباسهایشان پاره و بدنهایشان را زخمی کرده بودند. آنها غلاّت و بُخور برای هدیه به معبد بزرگ می‌بردند.

⁶Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went: and it happened, as he met them, he said to them, Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.

⁶ پس اسماعیل با گریه از مصفه برای دیدار آنها بیرون رفت. وقتی به آنها رسید، گفت: «خواهش می‌کنم بیایید و جدلیا را ببینید.»

⁷It was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah killed them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men who were with him.

⁷ به محض اینکه آنها وارد شهر شدند، اسماعیل و مردانی که با او بودند، همهٔ آنها را کشتند و بدنهای آنها را در یک چاه انداختند.

⁸But ten men were found among those who said to Ishmael, Don’t kill us; for we have stores hidden in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he stopped, and didn’t kill them among their brothers.

⁸ امّا ده نفر از آن گروه به اسماعیل گفتند: «خواهش می‌کنیم ما را نکُش! ما گندم، جو، روغن زیتون و عسل خود را در مزارع پنهان کرده‌ایم.» پس او از کشتن آنها منصرف شد.

⁹Now the pit in which Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had killed, by the side of Gedaliah (the same was who which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel), Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with those who were killed.

⁹ چاهی که اسماعیل اجساد را در آن می‌انداخت، همان چاه بزرگی بود که آسای پادشاه برای دفاع در برابر بعشا، پادشاه اسرائیل حفر کرده بود. اسماعیل آن چاه را از اجساد مقتولان پُر کرد.

¹⁰Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people who were in Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people who remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the children of Ammon.

¹⁰ سپس، او دختران پادشاه و سایر مردم مصفه یعنی کسانی را که نبوزرادان -‌فرماندهٔ سپاه- حفاظت از آنها را به عهدهٔ جدلیا سپرده بود، دستگیر کرد. اسماعیل آنها را به اسیری به طرف سرزمین آمون برد.

¹¹But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,

¹¹ یوحانان و فرماندهان ارتش که همراه او بودند، از جنایتی که اسماعیل مرتکب شده بود، باخبر شدند.

¹²then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon.

¹² پس آنها به دنبال او و پیروانش رفتند و در نزدیکی استخر بزرگ جبعون به او رسیدند.

¹³Now it happened that, when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, then they were glad.

¹³ وقتی اسیرانی که با اسماعیل بودند، یوحانان و فرماندهان ارتش را دیدند خوشحال شدند

¹⁴So all the people who Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned about and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.

¹⁴ و برگشته به طرف آنها دویدند.

¹⁵But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the children of Ammon.

¹⁵ امّا اسماعیل به اتّفاق هشت نفر از مردان خود موفّق به فرار شد و همه به طرف سرزمین آمون رفتند.

¹⁶Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon:

¹⁶ پس از آن یوحانان و فرماندهان ارتش مسئولیّت نگهداری از کسانی‌ را که اسماعیل بعد از کشتن جدلیا به اسارت گرفته بود -‌یعنی سربازان، زنان، کودکان و خواجه سرایان- به عهده گرفتند. آنها از بابلی‌ها می‌ترسیدند چون اسماعیل جدلیا را که پادشاه بابل به عنوان فرماندار گماشته بود، کشته بود. پس آنها به طرف مصر رفتند تا از بابلی‌ها دور شوند. در سر راهشان در کمهام، نزدیک بیت‌لحم توقّف کردند.

¹⁷and they departed, and lived in Geruth Chimham, which is by Bethlehem, to go to enter into Egypt,

¹⁷ آنها از بابلی‌ها می‌ترسیدند چون اسماعیل جدلیا را که پادشاه بابل به عنوان فرماندار گماشته بود، کشته بود. پس آنها به طرف مصر رفتند تا از بابلی‌ها دور شوند. در سر راهشان در کمهام، نزدیک بیت‌لحم توقّف کردند.

¹⁸because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor over the land.
