¹Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

¹ مردی به نام ایلعازر، از اهالی بیت‌عنیا یعنی دهكدهٔ مریم و خواهرش مرتا، مریض بود.

²It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.

² مریم همان بود كه به پاهای خداوند عطر ریخت و آنها را با گیسوان خود خشک كرد و اكنون برادرش ایلعازر بیمار بود.

³The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”

³ پس خواهرانش برای عیسی پیغام فرستادند كه: «ای خداوند، آن کسی‌که تو او را دوست داری بیمار است.»

⁴But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”

⁴ وقتی عیسی این را شنید گفت: «این بیماری به مرگ او منجر نخواهد شد بلكه وسیله‌ای برای جلال خداست تا پسر خدا نیز از این راه جلال یابد.»

⁵Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

⁵ عیسی مرتا و خواهر او و ایلعازر را دوست می‌داشت.

⁶When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

⁶ پس وقتی از بیماری ایلعازر باخبر شد دو روز دیگر در جایی‌که بود توقّف كرد

⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”

⁷ و سپس به شاگردانش گفت: «بیایید باز با هم به یهودیه برویم.»

⁸The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?”

⁸ شاگردان به او گفتند: «ای استاد، هنوز از آن وقت كه یهودیان می‌خواستند تو را سنگسار كنند، چیزی نگذشته است. آیا باز هم می‌خواهی به آنجا بروی؟»

⁹Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

⁹ عیسی پاسخ داد: «آیا یک روز دوازده ساعت نیست؟ کسی‌که در روز راه می‌رود لغزش نمی‌خورد زیرا نور این جهان را می‌بیند.

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹⁰ امّا اگر کسی در شب راه برود می‌لغزد، زیرا در او هیچ نوری وجود ندارد.»

¹¹He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

¹¹ عیسی این را گفت و افزود: «دوست ما ایلعازر خوابیده است امّا من می‌روم تا او را بیدار كنم.»

¹²The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

¹² شاگردان گفتند: «ای خداوند، اگر او خواب باشد حتماً خوب خواهد شد.»

¹³Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

¹³ عیسی از مرگ او سخن می‌گفت امّا آنها تصوّر كردند مقصود او خواب معمولی است.

¹⁴So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁴ آنگاه عیسی به طور واضح به آنها گفت: «ایلعازر مرده است.

¹⁵ I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”

¹⁵ به‌خاطر شما خوشحالم كه آنجا نبوده‌ام چون حالا می‌توانید ایمان بیاورید. بیایید پیش او برویم.»

¹⁶Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, “Didymus” means “Twin” said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.”

¹⁶ توما كه او را دوقلو می‌گفتند به سایر شاگردانش گفت: «بیایید ما هم برویم تا با او بمیریم.»

¹⁷So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¹⁷ وقتی عیسی به آنجا رسید، معلوم شد كه چهار روز است او را دفن کرده‌اند.

¹⁸Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia 15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles away.

¹⁸ بیت‌عنیا كمتر از سه کیلومتر از اورشلیم فاصله داشت

¹⁹Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

¹⁹ و بسیاری از یهودیان نزد مرتا و مریم آمده بودند تا به‌خاطر مرگ برادرشان آنها را تسلّی دهند.

²⁰Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

²⁰ مرتا به محض آنكه شنید عیسی در راه است، برای استقبال او بیرون رفت ولی مریم در خانه ماند.

²¹Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²¹ مرتا به عیسی گفت: «خداوندا، اگر تو اینجا می‌بودی، برادرم نمی‌مُرد.

²²Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²² با وجود این می‌دانم كه الآن هم هرچه از خدا بخواهی به تو عطا خواهد كرد.»

²³Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²³ عیسی گفت: «برادرت باز زنده خواهد شد.»

²⁴Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁴ مرتا گفت: «می‌دانم كه او در روز قیامت زنده خواهد شد.»

²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

²⁵ عیسی گفت: «من قیامت و حیات هستم. کسی‌که به من ایمان بیاورد حتّی اگر بمیرد، حیات خواهد داشت؛

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁶ هر کسی‌که زنده باشد و به من ایمان بیاورد، هرگز نخواهد مرد. آیا این را باور می‌کنی؟»

²⁷She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

²⁷ مرتا گفت: «آری، خداوندا! من ایمان دارم كه تو مسیح و پسر خدا هستی كه می‌باید به جهان بیاید.»

²⁸When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.”

²⁸ مرتا پس از اینكه این را گفت رفت و خواهر خود مریم را صدا كرد و به طور پنهانی به او گفت: «استاد آمده است و تو را می‌خواهد.»

²⁹When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.

²⁹ وقتی مریم این را شنید، فوراً بلند شد و به طرف عیسی رفت.

³⁰Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³⁰ عیسی هنوز به دهكده نرسیده بود بلكه در همان جایی بود كه مرتا به دیدن او رفت.

³¹Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³¹ یهودیانی كه برای تسلّی‌دادن به مریم در خانه بودند وقتی دیدند كه او با عجله برخاسته و از خانه بیرون می‌رود به دنبال او رفتند و با خود می‌گفتند كه او می‌خواهد به سر قبر برود تا در آنجا گریه كند.

³²Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³² همین‌که مریم به جایی‌که عیسی بود آمد و او را دید، به پاهای او افتاده گفت: «خداوندا، اگر در اینجا می‌بودی برادرم نمی‌مُرد.»

³³When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³³ عیسی وقتی او و یهودیانی را كه همراه او بودند، گریان دید؛ از دل آهی كشید و سخت متأثّر شد

³⁴and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁴ و پرسید: «او را كجا گذاشته‌اید؟» جواب دادند: «خداوندا، بیا و ببین.»

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁵ اشک از چشمان عیسی سرازیر شد.

³⁶The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

³⁶ یهودیان گفتند: «ببینید چقدر او را دوست داشت؟»

³⁷Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

³⁷ امّا بعضی گفتند: «آیا این مرد كه چشمان کور را باز كرد، نمی‌توانست کاری بكند كه جلوی مرگ ایلعازر را بگیرد؟»

³⁸Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁸ پس عیسی درحالی‌که از دل آه می‌کشید به سر قبر آمد. قبر غاری بود كه سنگی جلوی آن گذاشته بودند.

³⁹Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

³⁹ عیسی گفت: «سنگ را بردارید.» مرتا خواهر ایلعازر گفت: «خداوندا، الآن چهار روز از مرگ او می‌گذرد و متعفّن شده است.»

⁴⁰Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

⁴⁰ عیسی به او گفت: «آیا به تو نگفتم كه اگر ایمان داشته باشی، جلال خدا را خواهی دید؟»

⁴¹So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. NU omits “from the place where the dead man was lying.” Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

⁴¹ پس سنگ را از جلوی قبر برداشتند. آنگاه عیسی به آسمان نگاه كرد و گفت: «ای پدر، تو را شكر می‌کنم كه سخن مرا شنیده‌ای.

⁴² I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

⁴² من می‌دانستم كه تو همیشه سخن مرا می‌شنوی ولی به‌خاطر کسانی‌که اینجا ایستاده‌اند، این را گفتم تا آنها ایمان بیاورند كه تو مرا فرستاده‌ای.»

⁴³When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴³ پس از این سخنان، عیسی با صدای بلند فریاد زد: «ای ایلعازر، بیرون بیا.»

⁴⁴He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

⁴⁴ آن مرده، درحالی‌که دستها و پاهایش با كفن بسته شده و صورتش با دستمال پوشیده بود بیرون آمد. عیسی به آنها گفت: «او را باز كنید و بگذارید برود.»

⁴⁵Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁵ بسیاری از یهودیانی كه برای دیدن مریم آمده بودند، وقتی آنچه را عیسی انجام داد مشاهده كردند، به او ایمان آوردند.

⁴⁶But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁶ امّا بعضی از آنها پیش فریسیان رفتند و كارهایی را كه عیسی انجام داده بود به آنها گزارش دادند.

⁴⁷The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

⁴⁷ فریسیان و سران كاهنان با شورای بزرگ یهود جلسه‌ای تشكیل دادند و گفتند: «چه باید كرد؟ این مرد معجزات زیادی می‌کند.

⁴⁸If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

⁴⁸ اگر او را همین‌طور آزاد بگذاریم، همهٔ مردم به او ایمان خواهند آورد و آن وقت رومیان خواهند آمد و معبد بزرگ و ملّت ما را خواهند گرفت.»

⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

⁴⁹ یکی از آنها یعنی قیافا كه در آن سال، كاهن اعظم بود گفت: «شما اصلاً چیزی نمی‌دانید.

⁵⁰nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”

⁵⁰ متوجّه نیستید كه لازم است یک ‌نفر به‌خاطر قوم بمیرد تا ملّت ما به كلّی نابود نشود.»

⁵¹Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

⁵¹ او این سخن را از خود نگفت، بلكه چون در آن سال كاهن اعظم بود، پیشگویی كرد كه عیسی می‌باید در راه قوم یهود بمیرد،

⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

⁵² و نه تنها در راه آن قوم بلكه تا فرزندان خدا را كه پراكنده هستند به صورت یک بدن واحد به هم بپیوندد.

⁵³So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.

⁵³ از آن روز به بعد آنها توطئه قتل او را چیدند.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

⁵⁴ بعد از آن عیسی دیگر به طور علنی در بین یهودیان رفت و آمد نمی‌کرد، بلكه از آنجا به ناحیه‌ای نزدیک بیابان، به شهری به نام افرایم رفت و با شاگردان خود در آنجا ماند.

⁵⁵Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

⁵⁵ عید فصح یهودیان نزدیک بود و عدّهٔ زیادی از آبادیهای اطراف به اورشلیم آمدند تا قبل از عید خود را تطهیر نمایند.

⁵⁶Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”

⁵⁶ آنها در جستجوی عیسی بودند و در معبد بزرگ به یكدیگر می‌گفتند: «او به جشن نخواهد آمد. نظر شما چیست؟» امّا سران كاهنان و فریسیان دستور داده بودند كه هرکه بداند عیسی كجاست، اطّلاع دهد تا او را دستگیر نمایند.

⁵⁷Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

⁵⁷ امّا سران كاهنان و فریسیان دستور داده بودند كه هرکه بداند عیسی كجاست، اطّلاع دهد تا او را دستگیر نمایند.
