¹Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

¹ یک نفر از فریسیان به نام نیقودیموس كه از بزرگان قوم یهود بود،

²The same came to him by night, and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

² یک شب نزد عیسی آمد و به او گفت: «ای استاد، ما می‌دانیم تو معلّمی هستی كه از طرف خدا آمده‌ای زیرا هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند معجزاتی را كه تو می‌كنی انجام دهد، مگر آنکه خدا با او باشد.»

³Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, The word translated “anew” here and in John 3:7 (anothen) also means “again” and “from above”. he can’t see the Kingdom of God.”

³ عیسی پاسخ داد: «یقین بدان تا شخص از نو تولّد نیابد نمی‌تواند پادشاهی خدا را ببیند.»

⁴Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”

⁴ نیقودیموس گفت: «چطور ممكن است شخص سالخورده‌ای از نو متولّد شود؟ آیا می‌تواند باز به رحم مادر خود برگردد و دوباره تولّد یابد؟»

⁵Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into the Kingdom of God!

⁵ عیسی پاسخ داد «یقین بدان كه هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند به پادشاهی خدا وارد شود مگر آنکه از آب و روح تولّد یابد.

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

⁶ آنچه از جسم تولّد بیابد، جسم است و آنچه از روح متولّد گردد، روح است.

⁷ Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’

⁷ تعجّب نكن كه به تو می‌گویم همه باید دوباره متولّد شوند.

⁸ The wind The same Greek word (pneuma) means wind, breath, and spirit. blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

⁸ باد هرجا كه بخواهد می‌وزد صدای آن را می‌شنوی، امّا نمی‌دانی از كجا می‏‌آید، یا به كجا می‌رود. حالت كسی هم كه از روح خدا متولّد می‌شود همین‌طور است.»

⁹Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things be?”

⁹ نیقودیموس در جواب گفت: «این چطور ممكن است؟»

¹⁰Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?

¹⁰ عیسی گفت: «آیا تو كه یک معلّم بزرگ اسرائیل هستی، این چیزها را نمی‌دانی؟

¹¹ Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.

¹¹ یقین بدان كه ما از آنچه می‌دانیم سخن می‌گوییم و به آنچه دیده‌ایم شهادت می‌دهیم، ولی شما شهادت ما را قبول نمی‌كنید.

¹² If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

¹² وقتی دربارهٔ امور زمینی سخن می‌گویم و آن را باور نمی‌کنید، اگر دربارهٔ امور آسمانی سخن بگویم چگونه باور خواهید كرد؟

¹³ No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

¹³ کسی هرگز به آسمان بالا نرفت، مگر آن‌کس كه از آسمان پایین آمد، یعنی پسر انسان كه جایش در آسمان است.

¹⁴ As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

¹⁴ «همان طوری که موسی در بیابان مار برنزی را بر بالای تیری قرار داد، پسر انسان هم باید بالا برده شود

¹⁵ that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁵ تا هرکس به او ایمان بیاورد صاحب حیات جاودان گردد.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁶ زیرا خدا جهانیان را آن‌قدر محبّت نمود كه پسر یگانهٔ خود را داد تا هرکه به او ایمان بیاورد هلاک نگردد، بلكه صاحب حیات جاودان شود.

¹⁷ For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.

¹⁷ زیرا خدا پسر خود را به جهان نفرستاد كه جهانیان را محكوم نماید بلكه تا آنان را نجات بخشد.

¹⁸ He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

¹⁸ «هرکس به او ایمان بیاورد محكوم نمی‌شود امّا کسی‌که به او ایمان نیاورد در محکومیّت باقی می‌ماند، زیرا به اسم پسر یگانهٔ خدا ایمان نیاورده است.

¹⁹ This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

¹⁹ حكم این است كه نور به جهان آمد ولی مردم به علّت کارهای شرارت‌آمیز خود تاریكی را بر نور ترجیح دادند،

²⁰ For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.

²⁰ زیرا کسی‌که مرتكب كارهای بد می‌شود از نور متنفّر است و از آن دوری می‌جوید مبادا کارهایش مورد سرزنش واقع شود.

²¹ But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”

²¹ امّا شخص نیكوكار به سوی نور می‌آید تا روشن شود كه کارهایش در اتّحاد با خدا انجام شده است.»

²²After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them, and baptized.

²² بعد از آن عیسی با شاگردان خود به سرزمین یهودیه رفت و در آنجا مدّتی با آنها مانده تعمید می‌داد.

²³John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were baptized.

²³ یحیی نیز در عینون، نزدیک سالیم، به تعمید دادن مشغول بود. در آن ناحیه آب فراوان بود و مردم برای گرفتن تعمید می‌آمدند،

²⁴For John was not yet thrown into prison.

²⁴ زیرا یحیی هنوز به زندان نیفتاده بود.

²⁵There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.

²⁵ بین شاگردان یحیی و یک نفر یهودی مباحثه‌ای در مورد مسئلهٔ طهارت درگرفت.

²⁶They came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, the same baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”

²⁶ پس آنها نزد یحیی آمده به او گفتند: «ای استاد، آن کسی‌که در اطراف اردن با تو بود و تو دربارهٔ او شهادت دادی، در اینجا به تعمید دادن مشغول است و همه پیش او می‌روند.»

²⁷John answered, “A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.

²⁷ یحیی در پاسخ گفت: «انسان نمی‌تواند چیزی جز آنچه خدا به او می‌بخشد، به دست آورد.

²⁸You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’

²⁸ شما خود شاهد هستید كه من گفتم مسیح نیستم، بلكه پیشاپیش او فرستاده شده‌ام.

²⁹He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full.

²⁹ عروس به داماد تعلّق دارد. دوست داماد، كه در كناری ایستاده و صدای داماد را می‌شنود، لذّت می‌برد. شادی من هم همین‌طور كامل شده است.

³⁰He must increase, but I must decrease.

³⁰ او باید پیشرفت كند، درحالی‌که من عقب می‌روم.»

³¹He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

³¹ کسی‌که از بالا می‌آید بالاتر از همه است و کسی‌که متعلّق به این دنیای خاكی باشد، آدمی است زمینی و دربارهٔ امور دنیوی سخن می‌گوید، امّا آن کسی‌که از آسمان می‌آید از همه بالاتر است

³²What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness.

³² و به آنچه دیده و شنیده است شهادت می‌دهد امّا هیچ‌کس شهادت او را قبول نمی‌کند.

³³He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.

³³ هرکه شهادت او را بپذیرد صداقت و راستی خدا را تصدیق كرده است.

³⁴For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.

³⁴ کسی‌که از طرف خدا فرستاده شده است، كلام خدا را بیان می‌کند زیرا خدا روح خود را بی‌حد و حصر به او عطا می‌فرماید.

³⁵The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.

³⁵ پدر پسر را محبّت می‌کند و همه‌چیز را به او سپرده است. آن کسی‌که به پسر ایمان بیاورد حیات جاودان دارد؛ امّا کسی‌که از پسر اطاعت نكند حیات را نخواهد دید، بلكه همیشه مورد غضب خدا خواهد بود.

³⁶One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys The same word can be translated “disobeys” or “disbelieves” in this context. the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

³⁶ آن کسی‌که به پسر ایمان بیاورد حیات جاودان دارد؛ امّا کسی‌که از پسر اطاعت نكند حیات را نخواهد دید، بلكه همیشه مورد غضب خدا خواهد بود.
