¹The men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said to Jephthah, “Why did you pass over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didn’t call us to go with you? We will burn your house around you with fire!”

¹ مردم افرایم برای جنگ آماده شدند؛ آنها از رود اردن به سمت زفان گذشتند و به یفتاح گفتند: «چرا وقتی‌که به جنگ عمونیان رفتی، از ما دعوت نکردی که همراه تو برویم؟ حالا ما خانه‌ات را بر سرت آتش می‌زنیم.»

²Jephthah said to them, “I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, you didn’t save me out of their hand.

² یفتاح گفت: «روزی که من و همراهانم با دشمنان در جنگ بودیم از شما کمک خواستیم، امّا شما به کمک ما نیامدید.

³When I saw that you didn’t save me, I put my life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and Yahweh delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?”

³ بنابراین من جان خود را به خطر انداخته، به جنگ عمونیان رفتم و با کمک خداوند، آنها را شکست دادم. حالا آمده‌اید و با ما دعوا می‌کنید؟»

⁴Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, and in the midst of Manasseh.”

⁴ آنگاه یفتاح مردان جلعاد را جمع کرد و با افرایم جنگیدند و افرایم را شکست دادند. مردم افرایم یک بار گفته بودند: «شما فراریان افرایم هستید که در بین افرایم و منسی زندگی می‌کنید.»

⁵The Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. It was so, that when the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No”;

⁵ مردم جلعاد گذرگاههای رود اردن را به روی افرایم بستند و اگر یکی از فراریان افرایم می‌خواست از رود عبور کند، نگهبانان جلعاد می‌پرسیدند: «تو افرایمی هستی؟» اگر می‌گفت: «نی، نیستم.»

⁶then they said to him, “Now say ‘Shibboleth;’” and he said “Sibboleth”; for he couldn’t manage to pronounce it right: then they siezed him, and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time, forty-two thousand of Ephraim fell.

⁶ آن وقت نگهبانان می‌گفتند: «بگو، شبولت.» اگر به عوض شبولت، می‌گفت سبولت، یعنی کلمه را به درستی تلفّظ نمی‌کرد، آنگاه او را می‌کشتند. در آن وقت چهل و دو هزار نفر از مردم افرایم کشته شدند.

⁷Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in the cities of Gilead.

⁷ یفتاح مدّت شش سال حاکم اسرائیل بود. وقتی مُرد او را در یکی از شهرهای جلعاد به خاک سپردند.

⁸After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

⁸ بعد از او ابصان بیت‌لحمی حاکم اسرائیل شد.

⁹He had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent abroad, and thirty daughters he brought in from abroad for his sons. He judged Israel seven years.

⁹ او دارای سی پسر و سی دختر بود. او دختران خود را به خارج از خاندان شوهر داد و برای پسران خود هم سی عروس از خارج آورد. او مدّت هفت سال بر اسرائیل حکومت کرد.

¹⁰Ibzan died, and was buried at Bethlehem.

¹⁰ بعد ابصان مُرد و در بیت‌لحم دفن شد.

¹¹After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

¹¹ بعد از وفات ابصان، ایلون زبولونی، حاکم اسرائیل شد. او مدّت ده سال بر اسرائیل حکومت کرد.

¹²Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

¹² بعد ایلون درگذشت و در ایلون واقع در زبولون به خاک سپرده شد.

¹³After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.

¹³ پس از ایلون، عبدون پسر هلیل فرعتونی، بر اسرائیل حکومت کرد.

¹⁴He had forty sons and thirty sons’ sons, who rode on seventy donkey colts: and he judged Israel eight years.

¹⁴ او دارای چهل پسر و سی نوهٔ مذکر بود که بر هفتاد الاغ سوار می‌شدند. بعد از آن که هشت سال حکومت کرد فوت نمود و در سرزمین افرایم در کوهستان عمالیقیان دفن شد.

¹⁵Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

¹⁵ فوت نمود و در سرزمین افرایم در کوهستان عمالیقیان دفن شد.
