¹Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute: and Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

¹ یفتاح جلعادی جنگجویی دلاور، امّا پسر یک فاحشه بود و پدرش جلعاد نام داشت.

²Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.”

² جلعاد از زن اصلی خود دارای پسران دیگری هم بود. وقتی پسرانش بزرگ شدند، یفتاح را از سرزمین خود بیرون کرده به او گفتند: «تو از میراث پدر ما حقّی نداری، زیرا تو پسر یک زن دیگر هستی.»

³Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

³ پس یفتاح از نزد برادران خود فرار کرد و در سرزمین طوب ساکن شد. در آنجا تعدادی اشخاص شرور را دور خود جمع کرده، سردسته آنها شد.

⁴It happened after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

⁴ بعد از مدّتی، جنگ بین عمونیان و اسرائیل شروع شد.

⁵It was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

⁵ رهبران جلعاد، برای آوردن یفتاح، به طوب رفتند

⁶and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

⁶ و به او گفتند: «بیا و ما را رهبری کن تا به کمک تو بتوانیم با عمونیان جنگ کنیم.»

⁷Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

⁷ یفتاح به آنها جواب داد: «شما از روی دشمنی، مرا از خانهٔ پدرم بیرون راندید و اکنون چون گرفتار شده‌اید، پیش من آمده‌اید.»

⁸The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

⁸ سرکردگان جلعاد گفتند: «ما به تو احتیاج داریم تا با ما به جنگ عمونیان بیایی و رهبر و فرماندهٔ تمام سرزمین جلعاد باشی.»

⁹Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them before me, shall I be your head?”

⁹ یفتاح به آنان گفت: «اگر شما مرا به سرزمین خودم بازگردانید تا با عمونیان جنگ کنم و خداوند مرا پیروزی بخشد من حاکم شما خواهم بود.»

¹⁰The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do.”

¹⁰ آنها گفتند: «ما قسم می‌خوریم و خدا شاهد ما باشد که هرچه می‌خواهی انجام می‌دهیم.»

¹¹Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

¹¹ پس یفتاح با رهبران جلعادی رفت و مردم آنجا او را به عنوان رهبر و فرماندهٔ خود انتخاب کردند و جلعاد در مصفه در حضور خداوند، سخنان خود را بیان کرد.

¹²Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

¹² بعد یفتاح، قاصدانی را پیش پادشاه عمونیان با این پیام فرستاد: «با ما چه دشمنی داری که به جنگ ما آمده‌ای؟»

¹³The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

¹³ پادشاه عمونیان در جواب گفت: «به‌خاطر اینکه وقتی قوم اسرائیل از مصر آمدند، سرزمین ما را از وادی اَرنون تا به یَبوق و رود اردن گرفتند. حالا می‌خواهیم که سرزمین ما را به آرامی به ما بازگردانید.»

¹⁴Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;

¹⁴ یفتاح باز چند نفر را پیش پادشاه عمونیان فرستاد که به او بگوید:

¹⁵and he said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

¹⁵ «اسرائیل زمین موآب و عمونیان را بزور نگرفته است،

¹⁶but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds , and came to Kadesh;

¹⁶ بلکه وقتی از مصر خارج شدند، از راه بیابان به خلیج عقبه و از آنجا عبور کرده به قادش آمدند.

¹⁷then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.

¹⁷ بعد مردم اسرائیل از پادشاه اَدوم خواهش کرده، گفتند: به ما اجازهٔ عبور از سرزمینت را بده. امّا او خواهش ایشان را قبول نکرد. از پادشاه موآب هم همین خواهش را کردند و او هم به آنها جواب رد داد، پس مردم اسرائیل در قادش ماندند.

¹⁸Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

¹⁸ بعد از راه بیابان رفتند و سرزمین اَدوم و موآب را دور زده، به سمت شرقی موآب رسیدند و در قسمت دیگر وادی ارنون اردو زدند. گرچه ارنون، سرحد موآب بود، امّا مردم اسرائیل هیچ‌گاه سعی نکردند از سرحد گذشته، داخل خاک موآب شوند.

¹⁹Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

¹⁹ بعد مردم اسرائیل به سیحون، پادشاه اموریان و پادشاه حشبون پیام فرستاده، از آنها خواهش کردند که از راه سرزمین آنها به وطن خود بروند.

²⁰But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

²⁰ ولی سیحون به مردم اسرائیل اعتماد نکرد و نه تنها به آنها اجازهٔ عبور نداد؛ بلکه تمام سپاه خود را جمع کرده در یاهَص اردو زد و با اسرائیل جنگید.

²¹Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

²¹ خداوند خدای اسرائیل، سیحون و تمام مردم او را به دست اسرائیل تسلیم کرد. به این ترتیب، اسرائیل آنها را شکست داده تمام سرزمین اموریان را تصرّف نمودند.

²²They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

²² همچنان سرزمین اموریان از ارنون تا به یبوق و از بیابان تا رود اردن، به تصرّف اسرائیل درآمد.

²³So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?

²³ پس خداوند خدای اسرائیل بود که اموریان را به‌خاطر قوم خودش اسرائیل، بیرون کرد. آیا می‌خواهید آن زمین را پس بگیرید؟

²⁴Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

²⁴ شما آنچه را که خدایتان کموش به شما داده است، نگاه دارید و هرچه را هم که خداوند خدای ما به ما بخشیده است، برای خود نگاه می‌داریم.

²⁵Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

²⁵ آیا تو از بالاق پسر صفور، پادشاه موآب بهتر هستی؟ او هرگز خیال بدی در مقابل اسرائیل نداشته و نه هرگز با اسرائیل جنگیده است.

²⁶While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn’t you recover them within that time?

²⁶ مردم اسرائیل در این سرزمین مدّت سیصد سال زندگی کرده‌اند. و در سرزمین حَشبون، عروعیر و روستاهای اطراف آنها و تا وادی ارنون، پراکنده بوده‌اند. چرا در این مدّت، ادّعای مالکیّت آن را نکردید؟

²⁷I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

²⁷ بنابراین، من به شما بدی نکرده‌ام، بلکه این تو هستی که قصد جنگ داری و به ما بدی می‌کنی. خداوند که داور عادل است، داوری خواهد کرد که گناهکار کیست؛ قوم اسرائیل یا مردم عمون.»

²⁸However the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

²⁸ امّا پادشاه عمونیان به پیام یفتاح گوش نداد.

²⁹Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

²⁹ آنگاه روح خداوند بر یفتاح آمد و با ارتش خود از جلعاد و منسی گذشته، به مصفه جلعاد آمد و در آنجا برای حمله آماده شد.

³⁰Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

³⁰ یفتاح نذر کرد که اگر خداوند به او کمک کند که عمونیان را شکست بدهد،

³¹then it shall be, that whatever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

³¹ در وقت بازگشت به وطن، اولین کسی را که از در خانهٔ او بیرون بیاید، به عنوان قربانی سوختنی برای خداوند تقدیم کند.

³²So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.

³² پس یفتاح برای حمله به عمونیان از رود گذشت و خداوند او را پیروز گردانید.

³³He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

³³ در یک حملهٔ ناگهانی با کمک خداوند، آنها را شکست داد و بیست شهر ایشان را، از عروعیر تا منیت تا آبیل کرامیم از بین برد و همهٔ مردم را، به قتل رساند. به این ترتیب عمونیان از دست اسرائیل شکست خوردند.

³⁴Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

³⁴ بعد از آن یفتاح به خانهٔ خود در مصفه برگشت. یگانه دختر او، درحالی‌که رقص می‌کرد و دایره می‌زد، به استقبال او از خانه بیرون آمد. یفتاح به غیراز او پسر یا دختر دیگری نداشت.

³⁵It happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.”

³⁵ وقتی چشم یفتاح بر دخترش افتاد، یقهٔ خود را پاره کرد و گفت: «آه ای دخترم، تو مرا به چه دردسر بزرگی انداختی؛ زیرا از قولی که به خداوند داده‌ام، نمی‌توانم صرف نظر کنم.»

³⁶She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”

³⁶ دخترش به او گفت: «پدر جان، مطابق قولی که به خداوند داده‌ای، رفتار کن. مخصوصاً حالا که خداوند انتقام ما را از دشمن ما، یعنی عمونیان گرفته‌ است.

³⁷She said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

³⁷ امّا دو ماه به من مهلت بده تا بر کوهها گردش کنم و با دوستانم ماتم بگیرم، چون دیگر نمی‌توانم ازدواج کنم.»

³⁸He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.

³⁸ پدرش گفت: «برو!» آن دختر برای دو ماه از خانهٔ پدر خود رفت و با دوستان خود برای گردش به کوهها رفت و به‌خاطر اینکه باکره از دنیا خواهد رفت، ماتم گرفت.

³⁹It happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel,

³⁹ بعد از پایان دو ماه، پیش پدر خود برگشت و پدرش مطابق قولی که به خداوند داده بود، رفتار کرد. آن دختر به راستی هرگز عروسی نکرد. از آن به بعد در اسرائیل برای مردم عادت شد، که دختران جوان، هر سال برای چهار روز می‌رفتند و برای دختر یفتاح جلعادی ماتم می‌گرفتند.

⁴⁰that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

⁴⁰ که دختران جوان، هر سال برای چهار روز می‌رفتند و برای دختر یفتاح جلعادی ماتم می‌گرفتند.
