¹Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.

¹ یک روز سامسون به تمنه رفت و در آنجا یک دختر فلسطینی را دید.

²He came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, “I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me as wife.”

² وقتی به خانه برگشت به پدر و مادر خود گفت: «من یک دختر فلسطینی را، در تمنه دیده‌ام و می‌خواهم با او ازدواج کنم.»

³Then his father and his mother said to him, “Is there never a woman among the daughters of your brothers, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?” Samson said to his father, “Get her for me; for she pleases me well.”

³ امّا پدر و مادرش گفتند: «آیا در بین تمام خویشاوندان و اقوام ما، دختر پیدا نمی‌شود که تو می‌خواهی از بین فلسطینیان کافر زن بگیری؟» سامسون در جواب پدرش گفت: «او را برای من بگیرید، چون از او خیلی خوشم آمده است.»

⁴But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of Yahweh; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines had rule over Israel.

⁴ پدر و مادرش نمی‌دانستند که این امر ارادهٔ خداوند است؛ زیرا خداوند می‌خواست، به وسیلهٔ سامسون فلسطینیان را که در آن زمان بر اسرائیل حکومت می‌کردند، سرکوب نماید.

⁵Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and behold, a young lion roared against him.

⁵ پس سامسون با والدین خود به تمنه رفت. وقتی به تاکستانهای تمنه رسیدند، ناگهان شیر جوانی به سامسون حمله کرد.

⁶The Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a young goat; and he had nothing in his hand: but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done.

⁶ در همین زمان، روح خداوند به سامسون قدرت بخشید و او بدون اسلحه، شیر را مانند بُزغاله‌ای از هم درید. امّا از کاری که کرده بود، به پدر و مادر خود چیزی نگفت.

⁷He went down, and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well.

⁷ سپس رفت و با آن دختر گفت‌وگو نمود و او را پسندید.

⁸After a while he returned to take her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey.

⁸ پس از مدّتی، وقتی برای ازدواج با او می‌رفت، از جاده خارج شد و رفت تا لاشهٔ شیری را که کشته بود ببیند، در آنجا یک گروه زنبور را با عسل در لاشهٔ شیر دید.

⁹He took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went; and he came to his father and mother, and gave to them, and they ate: but he didn’t tell them that he had taken the honey out of the body of the lion.

⁹ قدری از عسل را برداشت تا در بین راه بخورد. وقتی به نزد پدر و مادر خود رسید به آنها هم کمی از آن عسل داد و آنها خوردند. امّا سامسون به آنها نگفت که عسل را از لاشهٔ شیر گرفته بود.

¹⁰His father went down to the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.

¹⁰ وقتی پدرش پیش آن دختر رفت، سامسون مطابق رسم جوانان، جشنی ترتیب داد و سی نفر از جوانان روستا را دعوت کرد.

¹¹It happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

¹¹ سامسون به مهمانان گفت: «من یک چیستان برایتان می‌گویم. اگر شما در مدّت هفت روز جشن جواب آن را پیدا کردید، من سی دست لباس ساده و سی دست لباس نفیس به شما می‌دهم.

¹²Samson said to them, “Let me tell you a riddle now. If you can declare it to me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing;

¹² و اگر نتوانستید، شما باید سی دست لباس ساده و سی دست لباس نفیس به من بدهید.» آنها گفتند: «بسیار خوب، چیستانت را به ما بگو.»

¹³but if you can’t declare it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.” They said to him, “Put forth your riddle, that we may hear it.”

¹³ سامسون گفت: «از خورنده خوردنی به دست آمد، و از زورآور، شیرینی.» پس از سه روز آنها هنوز نتوانسته بودند، جواب چیستان را پیدا کنند.

¹⁴He said to them, “Out of the eater came forth food. Out of the strong came forth sweetness.” They couldn’t in three days declare the riddle.

¹⁴ در روز چهارم، همگی پیش زن سامسون آمدند و گفتند: «از شوهرت معنی چیستان را بپرس وگرنه تو و خانهٔ پدرت را آتش می‌زنیم. آیا شما ما را دعوت کردید که غارتمان کنید؟»

¹⁵It happened on the seventh day, that they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you called us to impoverish us? Is it not so?”

¹⁵ پس زن سامسون پیش شوهر خود گریه کرد و گفت: «تو از من بدت می‌آید و مرا اصلاً دوست نداری. تو به هموطنانم یک چیستان گفتی، امّا معنی آن را بیان نکردی.» سامسون به او گفت: «ببین، من به پدر و مادرم هم، آن را نگفته‌ام. چرا به تو بگویم؟»

¹⁶Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, “You just hate me, and don’t love me. You have put forth a riddle to the children of my people, and haven’t told it me.” He said to her, “Behold, I haven’t told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?”

¹⁶ امّا آن زن هر روز نزد او گریه می‌کرد تا اینکه سرانجام در روز هفتم معنی آن را برایش گفت. آن زن نیز آن را برای جوانان فلسطینی بیان کرد.

¹⁷She wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it happened on the seventh day, that he told her, because she pressed him severely; and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

¹⁷ آنها در روز هفتم پیش از غروب آفتاب پیش سامسون آمده به او گفتند: «چیست شیرینتر از عسل؟ کیست قویتر از شیر؟» سامسون به آنها گفت: «اگر با گاو من شخم نمی‌کردید، نمی‌توانستید چیستان مرا حل کنید.»

¹⁸The men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” He said to them, “If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer, you wouldn’t have found out my riddle.”

¹⁸ آنگاه روح خداوند بر سامسون قرار گرفته، به او قدرت بخشید. پس سامسون به شهر اشقلون رفت و سی نفر از ساکنان آنجا را کشت. دارایی‌شان را گرفت و لباسهایشان را به کسانی‌که چیستان را حل کرده بودند، داد. سپس خشمگین به خانهٔ پدر خود بازگشت. زن سامسون نیز با دوست بسیار نزدیک او، که در شب عروسی با او بود، ازدواج کرد.

¹⁹The Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and struck thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave the changes of clothing to those who declared the riddle. His anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.

¹⁹ زن سامسون نیز با دوست بسیار نزدیک او، که در شب عروسی با او بود، ازدواج کرد.

²⁰But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.
