¹Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, “There shall not any of us give his daughter to Benjamin as wife.”

¹ مردم اسرائیل در مصفه قسم خورده گفتند: «هیچ‌کسی از ما نباید بگذارد که دخترش با مرد بنیامینی عروسی کند.»

²The people came to Bethel, and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely.

² مردم همه در بیت‌ئیل اجتماع کرده تا غروب در حضور خداوند نشستند و با آواز بلند زارزار گریه کردند

³They said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?”

³ و گفتند: «خداوندا، خدای اسرائیل، چرا چنین مصیبتی بر سر مردم اسرائیل آمد؟ چرا طایفهٔ بنیامین از میان بنی‌اسرائیل نابود شد؟»

⁴It happened on the next day that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

⁴ صبح روز بعد، مردم یک قربانگاه ساختند و قربانی‌های سوختنی و سلامتی تقدیم کردند.

⁵The children of Israel said, “Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up in the assembly to Yahweh?” For they had made a great oath concerning him who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.”

⁵ بعد پرسیدند: «کدام طایفهٔ اسرائیل در اجتماع ما به حضور خداوند حاضر نشد؟» آنها قسم خورده بودند که اگر کسی به حضور خداوند در مصفه نیاید، حتماً کشته می‌شود.

⁶The children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, “There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

⁶ در عین حال آنها به‌خاطر برادران بنیامینی خود بسیار غمگین بودند و می‌گفتند: «امروز یک طایفهٔ اسرائیل کم شد.

⁷How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since we have sworn by Yahweh that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?”

⁷ حال با مردانی که زنده مانده‌اند چه‌ کنیم؟ زیرا ما به نام خداوند قسم خورده‌ایم که دختران خود را به آنها ندهیم.»

⁸They said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?” Behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh Gilead to the assembly.

⁸ دوباره پرسیدند: «کدام طایفهٔ اسرائیل به حضور خداوند در مصفه حاضر نشده است؟» پس معلوم شد که از یابیش جلعاد هیچ‌کسی نیامده بود.

⁹For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead there.

⁹ زیرا وقتی‌که سرشماری کردند، حتّی یک نفر هم، از ساکنان یابیش جلعاد را در آنجا نیافتند.

¹⁰The congregation sent there twelve thousand men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.

¹⁰ پس آنها دوازده هزار نفر از مردان دلیر خود را به آنجا فرستاده گفتند: «به یابیش جلعاد بروید و همهٔ ساکنان آنجا را با زنها و کودکان بکشید.

¹¹This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has lain with a man.”

¹¹ و شما باید همهٔ مردان و همچنین زنانی را که باکره نیستند، بکلّی از بین ببرید.»

¹²They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins, who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

¹² آنها رفتند و در بین مردم جلعاد، چهارصد دختر جوان باکره یافتند و آنها را به اردوگاه شیلوه، در سرزمین کنعان آوردند.

¹³The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.

¹³ بعد مردم اسرائیل به بازماندگان طایفهٔ بنیامین که در صخر‌هٔ رِمون بودند، پیامی فرستاده، پیشنهاد صلح کردند.

¹⁴Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead: and yet so they weren’t enough for them.

¹⁴ مردان بنیامین به شیلوه برگشتند و اسرائیل آن چهارصد دختری را که از یابیش جلعاد زنده آورده بودند، به آنها دادند. امّا تعداد آن دخترها برای همهٔ آنها کافی نبود.

¹⁵The people grieved for Benjamin, because that Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

¹⁵ مردم اسرائیل بسیار غمگین بودند، زیرا خداوند بین آنها نفاق انداخته بود.

¹⁶Then the elders of the congregation said, “How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?”

¹⁶ رهبران قوم گفتند: «چون زنهای طایفهٔ بنیامین از بین رفته‌اند، پس برای بقیّهٔ مردان آنها از کجا زن پیدا کنیم؟

¹⁷They said, “There must be an inheritance for those who are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel.

¹⁷ بازماندگان طایفهٔ بنیامین باید وارث داشته باشند تا آن طایفهٔ بکلّی از بین نرود.

¹⁸However we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, ‘Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.’”

¹⁸ در عین حال ما هم نمی‌توانیم که دختران خود را به آنها بدهیم، زیرا قسم خورده‌ایم که: لعنت بر ما، اگر دختران خود را به مردان بنیامینی بدهیم.»

¹⁹They said, “Behold, there is a feast of Yahweh from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.”

¹⁹ بعد به فکرشان رسید که در شیلوه، بین لبونه و بیت‌ئیل در امتداد قسمت شرقی شاهراهی که از بیت‌ئیل به شکیم می‌رود، برای خداوند جشن سالانه برپا می‌شود.

²⁰They commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

²⁰ به مردان بنیامین گفتند: «بروید و در تاکستانها پنهان شوید.

²¹and see, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards, and each man catch his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

²¹ صبر کنید تا دختران شیلوه برای رقص با رقاصان بیرون بیایند. آنگاه از مخفیگاه‌ خود خارج شوید و هر کدامتان یکی از دخترها را برای خود گرفته، به سرزمین بنیامین بروید.

²²It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we didn’t take for each man his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, otherwise you would now be guilty.’”

²² اگر اجداد یا برادرانشان به نزد شما آمدند و اعتراض کردند، شما می‌توانید به آنها چنین بگویید: 'لطفاً اجازه دهید آنها را نگاه داریم، چرا که ما آنها را در جنگ از شما به اسیری نگرفته‌ایم تا همسران ما باشند. و از آنجا که شما آنها را به ما نداده‌اید، مقصّر شکستن سوگند خود نیستید.'»

²³The children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of those who danced, whom they carried off. They went and returned to their inheritance, built the cities, and lived in them.

²³ مردان بنیامین طبق دستور آنها رفتار کردند. هر کدام برای خود یکی از آن رقاصه‌ها را گرفته، به سرزمین خود بردند. شهرها را دوباره آباد کردند و در آنجا زندگی را از نو شروع کردند.

²⁴The children of Israel departed there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.

²⁴ مردم اسرائیل هم هر کدام به طایفهٔ و خانواده و سرزمین خود برگشتند. در آن زمان در اسرائیل پادشاهی نبود و مردم هرچه می‌خواستند می‌کردند.

²⁵In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
